Can this story get any better?

Why yes, yes it can.

Todd has a history of making up stories, said Dustan Costine, chairman of the Robertson County, Texas, Republican Party. He and Todd volunteered together on the failed presidential campaign of Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, a Green Tree native. Costine said Todd told supporters there that her car was vandalized because it had the candidate's stickers on it. He provided an e-mail from Todd in which she said her car tires had been slashed.

Costine said Todd had talked of running for Texas governor in 2006 as a write-in candidate. She said she had been undergoing treatment for cancer, had lost her hair and often wore a wig. Still, he said, she constantly smoked.

Police have no evidence Todd's friends were in on the Bloomfield attack story.

"I don't trust anything she told me," Garcia said.

Garcia said he met Todd among Republican circles in College Station. They were not close friends but had been virtual friends on the Internet site Facebook. Traveling around New York and Pennsylvania to campaign for the McCain-Palin ticket, she had spent the previous Friday and Saturday nights at his house, but Garcia said he had not seen her since then.

Todd called Garcia's cell phone at 8:56 p.m. Wednesday and asked if she could come over. When she arrived, Garcia thought the etched "B" looked like it could have come from the pin of a campaign button.

Garcia said he accepted her story, partly because Todd told him that she was a student at Texas A&M, where he had graduated in May. It was important, he said, to get out the message to other alumni and Republicans.

A Texas A&M official said Todd has never been a student at the school. People who knew Todd from Texas said they believe she has attended Blinn College, a community college in Bryan, Texas. A woman in the Blinn registrar's office said it would be "completely against the law" for her to release, confirm or provide any information about a student's status at the college.

Garcia said he only started to fully doubt the details of the story when police brought them in for questioning Thursday evening, and the session lasted more than five hours.

I certainly hope so, I really feel bad for her and hope that she does get and submit to the care she really needs before she hurts herself or somebody else.

I also hope that this matter is closed and that we move on to something or somebody else, there is no reason to further intrude into her life.

But if not from her, will anyone (Republicans and their defenders in the media) be offering an apology to an entire race of men who have, once again, been used as the boogie-man for a warped socio-political agenda???!!!

The whole affair just makes me angry and sad.

I really can't post anything that isn't some crazy and incoherent rant about The State of Things and how this reflects on us all and blah blah blah...

The truth is, she is a stupid little girl who tried to do a very dangerous thing. It's sh*t like this that incited lynchings.

I can't even pretend to know how to deal with this.

I don't know.

Punish her? What kind of punishment? Help her? Will it actually help? And what about the people out there that are still seething that an angry black man hurt one of their candidate's volunteers? Is there any help for them? Is anything going to change at all?

You look anywhere in our past and you can find incidents like this. It's not going to get better. We're not going to get better. Sure, we've moved on from the days of Without Sanctuary, but now it's just a couple guys in a pickup truck with a chain instead of an entire town on the village green with a rope and a tree. The damage is the same.

So the only thing I want to know is: does she understand this.

I'll let smarter people come up with things like punishment and treatment. I don't f*cking know.

I just want to know if she really understands.

/I told you it would be crazy and incoherent

Wow. Now that has to be some kind of super duper special batshiat crazy too. Maybe this'll mean she gets to sit in a rubber room for awhile. They'll take her to the happy home with trees and flowers and chirping birds and basket weavers who twiddle their thumbs and their toes....

Seriously though, that's a damn shame. Perfectly good waste of a white girl...

Oh, Jesus Christ! She was pathological in her description of a scary black man who mutilated her for political reasons.

Two weeks before the election.

She smelled failure on the wall and did her part to try to turn things around. Failed miserably. Yes, let's get her some lithium, after she serves her prison sentence.

Game over, man. Game over.

Nah, she needs help. The article says she did attention getting stuff to the Ron Paul people also. I think she wanted to be the center of attention more than she wanted McCain to be elected. If you need attention so bad that you are willing to hurt yourself to get it, then you need help.

I'd be more inclined to agree with you if she actually hurt anyone other than herself, but she didn't. If she can get better treatment in a hospital type setting then I say send her there. Prison might just make things worse for her.

Let's feel sorry for her now by saying she's mentally ill. She's just an innocent victim. She needs help.

She knew exactly what she was doing. She didn't plan carefully because she thought her story would just be taken at face value. She was somewhat right in that thought, many people did just take her word for it without question.

She was full of the hate and fear McCain and Palin work so hard to spread. She was desperate for her candidate to win.
She thought she was saving America from the evil Negro.
She thought she could sway the results of the election by getting people to fear the big scary black man.

There's millions more just like her out there wishing they had thought of it first and going over it in their heads how they would have done it better.
She is the typical McCain supporter. Fanatical. Racist. So scared of the socialist/terrorist/Muslim/America destroying Negro they'll do Anything to win.

I'm not as kind as you, but I understand. This could have been a very severe attack on someone I support, and for a totally bullshiat reason.

She needs to seek help, but this was a calculated attack of someone in their right mind. It was planned and carried out. I'm not a huge fan of giving someone a pass for a methodical attack.

The judicial system will have the final word, and I'm fine with that.

This is the core of what should be remembered about this incident. Seriously. CtrlAltDelete is a hundred, no a thousand percent right on this.

It's 2008. And yet, a white woman points a shaky finger at an [imaginary] black man and the world reacts in ways that -- now -- turn our stomach.

This is wrong, wrong, wrong on so many levels. And anyone that tries to pa-shaw or handwave this is only contributing to the problem.

Did you even read the article. She faked attacks before for attention. Attention that had nothing to do with McCain. This is a girl with a personality disorder that needs psychiatric treatment.

Besides she didn't say shiat in the article. People who knew her in the past from doing this shiat did.

She did the same type of thing to the Ron Paul people by saying her tires were slashed and the Ron Paul stuff was stolen from her car. It doesn't sound like they did anything about it so she went to McCain and upped it to the next level. Her motives were likely personal and not political. It really was a great way to get attention...

As much as I'd like to turn this on McCain/Palin and say their campaign of fear made this woman do this to herself, I doubt that is the real reason.

Let me be clear. The issue has two facets:

1. The woman. As I said above, the problem is that we still react viscerally when a white victim points a finger at a black aggressor, and that tends to cloud our vision when we should be looking deeper.

2. The woman is obviously mentally ill. However, let us not make the mistake of letting that cloud the larger issue. If we ever want to make race relations a non-issue, we as a country need to stop reacting immediately and viscerally to the story when it is black/white.

Sure some people might have been reacting the way they did because it was a black person attacking a white person, but I think a big part of this was it was a man attacking a woman. Look at all the news the white guy attacking the white grandma got because she had McCain signs. We still react strongly when men attack women.

I agree that in some ways, what you say is true. I wish to add that to a certain degree, the black/white issue -- for some people -- adds a whole other degree of intensity. It wouldn't have played the way it did in the national press if she had said that a white guy attacked her same the exact same things she purported that the black guy did.

The moment I read this story yesterday afternoon I posted in a TF thread "I wonder if the "B" is scratched in backwards." Am I Krissken? No, I'd just read a Wiki article about Morton Downey, Jr. who faked an attack by Neo-Nazis and made the same mistake this woman did: carving/drawing something in a mirror so it was backwards.

The next post in the thread had the image of the backwards "B".

I was also living in NY when the entire Tawana Brawley thing happened. I dunno; maybe I'm immune to these types of stories...

No, actually, there is a big reason to further intrude into her life.

She was willing to incite race-hate without even being victimized. She said she was attacked by a 6'4" black man for supporting John McCain and had the new scarlet letter carved into her face when it wasn't true.

Confabulat [TotalFark] 2008-10-25 04:38:14 AM
She doesn't need help or pity.

She needs to be mocked, scorned, and abused for the remainder of her life.

We've all known people like this. They know full well what they are doing. Her MySpace page indicates she loved to lie and was proud of it.

Being a lying attention whore is not a mental illness--it's a personality flaw, and a dangerous one at that.

Screw her. If she was an Obama supporter and tried to make up a bunch of Republican jocks beating her up, I'd feel the same way.

Some people are just rotten, spoiled brats who want to be special.

No sympathy for her. Would she have come forward if the police had arrested a big black guy in the neighborhood, do you think?

Liars who have their own agendas, and don't care who they ruin to get it.

Saying "oh she needs mental care" is a cop-out. No one would offer mental care to the innocents these people hope get blamed so they can get out ahead.

There is no medical cure for lying attention whores. None at all.

She didn't "carve" anything. That wound is probably already healed. She made sure she didn't actually draw blood, did you notice that?

I once had a girlfriend who would disappear into the bathroom for long periods of time when we would fight--finally I'd get out of bed to see what was up, and always she was on the toilet, scratching lines into her thighs with scissors and stuff. She never actually hurt herself or drew much blood, it was all about distracting me from the argument and making it all about her and her needs.

It works the first few times, to be honest. Eventually I just laughed at her and moved out.

Foaming: I'm still curious how she gave herself the black eye.

People keep saying mascara, but if that were the case, police wouldn't have spent any time investigating it. They say she went to a doctor at 1AM, and if it weren't obvious to the police, it would have been immediately obvious to the doctor.

Yep. She admits that she's had mental problems in the past.

There's a link to the McCain campaign, and probably to the College Republicans. A local McCain campaign official (soon to be fired, surely) talked to KDKA about the incident and gave salacious details that were not part of the official reports. No link to anyone higher up, but I don't think anyone higher up would be stupid enough to touch this one.

As to the College Republicans, Drudge got the photo from someone, and the only people the photographer released the photos to were the police and the College Republicans.

Not likely.
