actually before 'happy metal' Van Halen introduced 'teeth metal' because they were always smiling.

At the risk of splitting hairs, neither Bon Jovi nor Twisted Sister perform anything remotely approaching metal.

I think Dee Snider has been huffing his old hairspray again ;)

If you call all that Trivium, Lamb of God, and Shadows Fall stuff metal...

No thanks.

Joystk [TotalFark] 2008-10-24 12:39:27 PM
Oh, and Avenged Sevenfold.

I'd take Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax over those bands any day.

I don't really like Trivium, but LoG and Shadows Fall have made some great albums the last few years.

I also grew up with Slayer (7 concerts, all albums, most of their DVDs, met Kerry King totally at random at a mall), Megadeth, Metallica, Anthrax, etc.

Let's not forget Sepultura, Pantera, and Machine Head who all came to prominence in the 90s.

East coast metal like Sworn Enemy and God Forbid have been on my playlist for a while now too.

Big hair /= Metal

Bon Jovi isn't even rock 'n roll, IMHO. I went backstage 10 years ago with a friend of mine who used to tour with them when he crewed for the Scorpions. We couldn't even find a beer. Pussies.

Amen. Amazing metal is put out every year. I'm not talking about that Americanized Mallcore shiat. I'm talking about amazing bands such as (name dropping time):

Therion
Dark Tranquility
Opeth
Amon Amarth
Vintersorg
Borknagar
Summoning
Amorphis
Kalmah
Agalloch
Symphony X
Blind Guardian
Nightwish
Dissection
etc.

For the record Bon Jovi was NEVER metal.

um, no. they were a hair band and none of those were "real" metal bands

To this day I still despise guitars/basses with the down turned headstocks.

80s MTV metal was pathetic and lame as hell. Too L.A. and "sunny" for real Heavy Metal. That crap had none of the dark and sublime threat of earlier metal bands.

I remember this following 80s "metal band" as being ok.:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3xpJ8tmzm4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVaSFtw8Fww&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYxrH2zmy84&feature=related

They were pretty much hated by everyone.
Critics who gave Big F lousy reviews gave garbage like Poison and Warrant 4-5 stars.

Mastodon is an awesome newer metal band. Can not wait for the new album.

I always preferred heavy without the metal.

Queensryche. I like them a lot. They definitely did the "hair" thing, but never the cheeky, stupid thing. How do they fall out in this? I mean "Silent Lucidity" certainly wasn't metal, but it was a good, sincere song. All their music sounds like Seattle... gloomy but not ugly.

Prog metal?

I promise you, having been there at the time, nobody gave Poison and Warrant 4-5 stars.

Came in here to say that and only that.

Fake metal fans, please continue to not like it. We're doing just fine being better than you.

I still have the original LP of Blue Cheer's Vincebus Eruptum, with the embossed cover. Now that was metal. I taped it to my very first cassette player. Now that was recording. Get off my lawn.

THIS.

Interesting.....I didn't see any heavy metal bands listed in that article.

Anyway I prefer it when people look at me funny when I am tuned into liquid metal while driving around town.

matthew_tray 2008-10-24 05:12:32 PM
Bon Jovi's New Jersey album is terribly underrated. As is Far Beyond Driven from Pantera. I like both but for different reasons.

/Neither are as good as Vulgar Display of Power, though!

We are, aren't we! Anyway, if metal - even what many might consider "fake" metal - rises in popularity again and supplants all this whiny stuff currently standing in for "rock," I think that's a good thing.

yep...they did.
I speak of mainstream rags though.

angrygrizzly 2008-10-24 05:36:25 PM
Just for the record (and potential abuse)...

Favorite albums in no particular order:

Dokken--Back for the Attack
Metallica--And Justice for All
Queensryche--Operation Mindcrime
Scorpions--Blackout
Judas Priest--Painkiller
Iron Maiden--Somewhere in Time
Pantera--Vulgar Display of Power
Def Leppard--Pyromania (yes, I said it)

No death metal for me, thanks.
