Does it come with USB connector or is it wireless?

unless it's a used Strat, a $300 Strat is going to blow. Strats are one of those rare times when made in the USA is without question or doubt the way to go.

Buying this controller to play Guitar Hero = stupid.

Telling everyone who plays Guitar Hero to stop playing and learn to play a real guitar = stupid.

Next?

Paying $250 is stupid, but there is nothing wrong with the GH/RB crowd. Its just for fun and pretty much everyone knows that (except for a few arrogant musicians.)

Guess what? Konami did it first, again!

Link (new window)

But really, it does make a world of difference with good buttons and extra weight, so it doesn't feel like a cheap plastic toy.

Actually, I picked up a mexi-made strat that is really nice. Took about an hour to dial in the setup and intonation and it plays really well. Sure the pickups are a bit weak, but you need to yank out the pickups on most American made strats too.

The "Gibson" sticker alone costs $1000 and just isn't really worth it. But it is certainly a better investment than a $250 joystick.

So, basically, you're saying 'I bought a cheap used shiatty item, and then tacked on some high-end user upgrades'.

That is completely interchangeable with 99% of everything, everywhere.

People like Rock Band and Guitar Hero.

They do not like to have to spend 2-5 years learning to play the damned instruments.

Why is that so god damned hard to understand?

Millions play RB/GH. Dozens (if that) might (maybe) be 'real' players at the level the games say they are.

Games are about fantasy. I do not play Dead space because I hope I wake up tomorrow surrounded by a cloud of zombies.

Idiots.

That's more like it.

I think I'd still rather have a crappy strat in place of a video game controller. It's hard to have fun with a video game controller without the video games. That and I'm quite bad at guitar hero.

You also can go to sleep at night knowing you didn't spend hundreds of dollars on a video game, just to play with a fake band for a fake crowd.

Don't get me wrong, those games can be fun, but after playing the shiat out of them for the past few years, I got tired of them already. How is anyone still interested in doing that same shiat over and over anymore? I guess the addition of other instruments, and now the ability to create your own songs will increase the longevity a bit, but damn, talk about a repetitive formula.

I'll tell you how- the games are still fun. Just because you decided to get too old to appreciate them move on, doesn't mean they aren't fun anymore. It's like saying "I played Doom and that was fun. But why would anyone still play any first person shooters like Call Of Duty?". Simple, because that type of game is also still fun, It's a problem with YOU, not the games.

There's a farking big difference between two games like Doom and Call of Duty, and two games like Guitar Hero 1 and Guitar Hero 4. That analogy just flat out sucks. A better one would be different incarnations of Tetris or something. And let's be honest, the appeal of Guitar Hero isn't the gameplay, it's being able to fantasize you are playing along to the songs. If those games had to rely on the actual gameplay to make them fun, there's no way they'd still be as popular as they are. You can still like the game, I don't really give a fark, I'm just saying the phenomenon has officially past me on as of Guitar Hero 3. I no longer understand the hype surrounding the latest release of yet another song pack or graphical update to the exact same formula I played for hundreds and hundreds of hours the past couple of years.

A good mexi-strat (Fender not Squier) should cost little more than $349.00 new (sale price) and certainly does not "blow" ...of course the american made model is the way to go if you can afford it.

rampagingturtle 2008-10-24 12:05:37 AM
I'm pretty sure a guy I know spent way less than $250 putting the innards of his wireless GH controller into a cheapass pawn shop guitar. Then again, he already had the tools, the soldering equipment, and nothing better to do with his time that week.

The Dynamite Monkey 2008-10-24 12:05:39 AM
You can get a very playable Squire for $50 less than this controller. And don't kid yourself, it's about as good a value for an instrument as you will find anywhere. And if you are a good player, and set it up right, and have a decent amp, you can play it onstage and it will sound really good.

You guitar snobs are funny... there are some very fine instruments being manufactured outside the US... with good wood, also. Computer routing makes everything perfect now. Sure the finishes are nicer on the Am Stds, but unless you are going custom shop, you might not notice. I know real players who actually prefer the Japanese Fenders.

As suggested above, buying a good inexpensive neck and body and putting the pickup you want in it (Fralins! Or TV Jones in your archtop!) is an excellent way to get a great player guitar at a great price.

Oh, and I love playing GH with my kids. Rock band too.

I once caught a guy playing "Eruption" to try out a 5150 amp. I tapped him on the shoulder and told him we did not allow that song in guitar center. He apologized. Then I told him I didn't work there, I was just being an asshole, and he could play any damned thing he pleased. He laughed and did not kick my ass.

Phht, took me two months from buying my first to playing gigs at school, it's not hard to get to, say, Kurt Cobain standard. Course it'll take a little longer to rise to Dragonforce levels, but why on earth would you want to?

Plus, a $300 Strat will probably be a Squier, and I wouldn't let my biggest enemy buy a Squier (or Epiphone).
