You do know you just quoted Robert Johnson, whom your boyfriend was merely covering. "Stop Breaking Down"

Ripping off the blues gods? Yeah, how original

I am an old bass player and I tell you this:

I would trade my left nut to be able to jam with a young guitarist with awesome vintage tone who masters the alternate tunings for greasy blues crunch style AND a drummer who plays simple, solid and direct and doesn't stumble all over or interrupt the groove with tricky show off fills and dynamics.

Of course the irony is that they both shun the bass.

I speculate that 90% of "White Stripe haters" are non-musicians who know nothing of the joy of jamming to basic easy grooves.

Yeah,Jack is derivative but I have profound affection for what he is taking from. I have spent the last 20 years trying to find guys my own age who sound like Ry Cooder.

Yeah, I know that. It is a crime to appreciate another artist's take on an old song or do you cover your ears every time "Sweet Home Chicago" comes on the radio, or do you get mad that everyone corrects Johnson's geographic faux pas?

Jack White is an absolute bad@ss. I saw the Raconteurs a few weeks ago and he could barely hold up his guitar for more than one song and couldn't sing either because of his neck. But he didn't cancel and he busted ass the best he could.

And the reason why most people like him is because he loves old blues music and covers the songs that you or I would never have heard of in a million years if not for current musicians covering them. His cover of Son House's Death Letter is fawesome

Wombatzu 2008-10-23 10:14:28 AM
if the White Stripes hadn't broken through and achieved some mainstream success and if Jack hadn't had a tabloid run there for a while dating some famous actresses, all the haters would probably think he was the coolest thing to happen to blues rock in the last ten years.

he was a good choice for the Bond theme, but he should be doing back-up vocals only and they should have found a better singer than Alicia Keyes.

I like the Stripes, although the lack of a bass player is kinda irritating to me, and was done better by Slater-Kinney. Whatever, they're fun and original in other ways.

But most covers like that are vastly, sadly inferior to the original. Perhaps the worst offender is the Blues Brothers' output. They hired all the original musicians they could find, but I'm sorry, having a fat cokehead comedian dilettante sing your version of "Sweet Home Chicago" is going to screw the pooch on the whole thing. Second worst: George Thoroughgood(sic) singing anything.

Oh, and being endorsed by the Stones is great...IF IT'S 1972.

Just my opinions.

Why does everyone think that playing blues music is "ripping off" the originals. It's just simple farking chord progressions that EVERY blues artist utilized. Even the people you think are Gods ripped off other's by these trite definitions of "ripping off." Robert Johnson for instance, ripped off Son House. Muddy Water's, ripped off Son House. Son House, ripped some old Mississippi delta blues man and spirituals. The fact remains though, none of these people ripped anyone off. There were all just damn good at playing the blues. That's why they were original. That's why they were God's.
So when you fast forward a few generations and bad mouth the artists who are trying to do just the same as your "Gods" before your being a pretentious asshole (just letting you know). Also, I fail to see how current artists are ripping off the blues when they bring such a high level of originality to the genre. It's called farking evolution. Take "Ball and Biscuit" for example, that's nothing but a standard blues progression seen a million times before, but that hack Jack White is able to transform it into something original. Something that resonated amongst the current generation. I don't know about you, but taking something that had been that dated and making it resonate amongst a generation who hadn't really gave a rats ass about said genre is a monumental achievement. But you'd probably not appreciate that cause you get all wet over your local indie band covering yet another version of "Creep," and in the off chance they become good enough to become a mainstream success you'll say they were hacks for doing so.
If you want to blame people for ruining the blues, blame the hobby bands that perpetuate a mediocre perception of the genre, and lead people to believe there's no further worth in trying to evolve the genre.

I really don't like the song. It doesn't fit James Bond at all and I can barely understand the bits where they're both singing. If it weren't the official video I'd just blow it off as not being the final cut, but as it is, it's pretty bad.

I'll go ahead and agree with you on that one. It's not Meg or the lack of bass that bugs me, though. I just feel that they write better songs. Maybe not so much with Broken Boy Soldiers, but Consolers really feels like they've got their sound down and have become comfortable writing together.

I loves me some White Stripes but I've got to give Raconteurs the nod.

/Seen 'em both live and both were excellent shows.

I just saw that video on Youtube, and man, it stinks. They (Keys and White) have zero chemistry together, and it doesn't help that the green screen acting is some of the worst ever; Makes you wonder if they even met to record the song originally.

Jack on Meg as a drummer : (from wiki)

"I never thought 'God, I wish Neil Peart was in this band.' It's kind of funny: When people critique hip hop, they're scared to open up, for fear of being called racist. But they're not scared to open up on female musicians, out of pure sexism. Meg is the best part of this band. It never would have worked with anybody else, because it would have been too complicated... It was my doorway to playing the blues."

Meg on herself as drummer :

"I appreciate other kinds of drummers who play differently, but it's not my style or what works for this band. I get [criticism] sometimes, and I go through periods where it really bothers me. But then I think about it, and I realize that this is what is really needed for this band. And I just try to have as much fun with it as possible." ... I just know the way [Jack] plays so well at this point that I always know kind of what he's going to do. I can always sense where he's going with things just by the mood he's in or the attitude or how the song is going. Once in a while, he throws me for a loop, but I can usually keep him where I want him."

Sounds like professional musicians to me.

Your Four C's of the Blues are completely arbitrary, and more than likely a response to my post NOT an insight into said music genre. At least that's what I thought until you said "Notice how the people you accuse of "ripping" each....blah, blah, blah," because that was a response to my post, and the juxtaposition of that statement with your "4 C's of the blues" leads me to believe that they were an honest insight on your part. Seeing how those 4 C's made absolutely no sense with regards to the blues, it is my conclusion that you're a dumbass, and may god have mercy on your soul.

//Would like to have had an interesting discussion.
