Has the bar for "damn fine" musicians been significantly lowered recently?

What in The 2008-10-22 12:54:04 PM
What - no George Acosta? How the hell did Creed make this list?

Where's Molly Hatchet? Lynyrd Skynyrd? KC and the Sunshine Band?

Can't forget Limp Bizkit

puckhead 2008-10-22 01:11:22 PM
I saw Creed and Backstreet Boys in the first ten listed.
I didn't not make it to eleven.

nabernat 2008-10-22 01:18:09 PM
First thing that came to mind when I read "damn fine" was Tom Petty.

Jim R 2008-10-22 01:23:12 PM
Only a handful of those listed deserve to be mentioned, and many who should be on the list, like Skynyrd, are nowhere to be found.

Martstar 2008-10-22 01:25:56 PM
I had no idea Florida was responsible for so much musical suck. Aside from Tom Petty and maybe a couple others, everyone on that list I either haven't heard of or consider some of the worst in music over the last decade or two.

I Like Bread 2008-10-22 01:25:59 PM
I saw maybe one or two "damn fine" musicians in a list of flash-in-the-pan MTV fodder.

Philbigtime 2008-10-22 01:29:58 PM
Tom Petty is the only good one I can think of. Please enlighten me.

/not clicking 31 times for this crap

Crappy bands should do all of their shows in front of green screen.

Tom Petty was the only good musician on the entire list...

It kind of makes sense that all the crap I hate comes from Florida though..

bottsicus 2008-10-22 03:35:29 PM
Of the 35 "artists" on that list, I've heard of 16. Of those, I like/can tolerate 4, 8 suck royally, and 4 I've either never heard, or haven't heard enuogh of to form an opinion.

Yay Florida.

Jim motherfarking Morrison
Against Me!
Iron & Wine
Death
Tom Petty
Lynyrd Skynyrd
The Outlaws
Molly Hatchet
.38 Special
Allman Brothers Band (formed in FL :p)
Bellamy Brothers
KC & The Sunshine Band
Morbid Angel (not really into it, but a lot of people are)
New Found Glory (see above)
dead prez
T-Pain
2 Live Crew
etc etc

CZMisfitsFan 2008-10-22 07:28:26 PM
Yay for Iced Earth, Six Feet Under, and Obituary.

Boo for no Death, Cynic, Morbid Angel or Savatage.

safari joe does it again:

Add the Brokeback Boys and N' Stink and thats enough suck to doom the list.

Also, I thought Marilyn Manson was from Ohio. He didn't move to Florida until he was about 18 or so.

some Florida bands that have achieved international success:

Death (legendary)
Morbid Angel (has sold more than half a million records)
Iced Earth (these guys ought to be as big as iron maiden but aren't for some strange reasoning. bad marketing department?)
Monstrosity
Malevolent Creation (actually from NY but moved to FL because we're just that awesome)
Cannibal Corpse (well over a million records sold)
Kamelot
Circle II Circle
Control Denied
Savatage (legendary. most of the band is involved in TSO these days)
Decide
Hate Eternal
Six Feet Under
Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Obituary
Cynic (any fan of prog that doesn't know this band is missing out)
Atheist
Trivium (I think they suck but..)

some other great Florida bands:

Dark Faith
Kult ov Azazel
Paths of Possession
Torche

fedexrico 2008-10-22 10:25:55 PM
where is my Kamelot?

/love me some metal

Lumber Jack Off 2008-10-22 11:55:03 PM
funny fact about Creed:

Despite the fact that they are from Tallahassee, FL, this entire city likes to pretend that this band never existed. people don't talk about them, ever. the mainstream rock radio station in town never plays them. venues that they used to play at back in the day have since taken down photo's of creed from their photo galleries and don't even mention them as "look at this band that got it's start here, etc..."

it really made me lol when I first noticed this. one has to wonder if Jacksonville, FL did the same thing (oh god I hope so) with limp biscuit.

Kali-Yuga 2008-10-23 12:03:43 AM
Don't know about Florida as that list is so full of fail.

I'm constantly amazed at the amount of great bands/musicians that come out of Sweden though.

/no, this doesn't include ABBA

Cross of Iron 2008-10-23 12:07:15 AM
Cannibal Corpse was originally from Buffalo, New York.

/the more you know...

Lumber Jack Off 2008-10-23 12:07:52 AM
but ABBA is amazing?

but ABBA is amazing.

Kali-Yuga 2008-10-23 12:11:44 AM
Lumber Jack Off: but ABBA is amazing?

Definitely not my style of music, but they definitely were successful and commercially viable.

I just knew someone would attempt to call me out as an ABBA fan or something when I made the statement I did.

sewiusproductions 2008-10-23 12:12:36 PM
I didn't feel like clicking all the way through, they had some really crappy "bands" on there, the main question is, did Ray Charles make the list? I'm really glad Tom Petty was on there, as I view them as one of Florida's only contribustion to the arts...

dogcow69 [TotalFark] 2008-10-23 03:17:58 PM
WTF? No Skynard, Allman or Molly Hatchet on the list...FAIL FAIL FAIL!

And to a lesser extent the outlaws and 38 special

Rob4127 2008-10-23 09:06:56 PM

CaptainBeefheart 2008-10-23 09:40:25 PM
A Gram Parsons mention would have greatly improved this shiatty list.

John Buck 41 2008-10-23 11:24:37 PM
Absence of The Outlaws=worthless list.

Get off my lawn. NOW.
