Since when do you need 370 electoral votes to win? I guess the upside of this is it might force McCain to campaign there too and spend less time in OH, VA, FL, PA.

With the potential for getting Diebolded or voter registrations being challenged or his base getting too confident, he really can't pass up any opportunity to hit McCain everywhere he can. And with the size of the donations lately, he doesn't need to.

You nailed it! McCain's money is limited.

Actually, I think West Virginia is in play, just because of Obama's ground game. According to 538:
Obama has six main offices, 14 satellite offices in the state, and Obama for America State Director Tom Vogel told us that during the GOTV phase, all 55 counties in the state will have early voting and weekend GOTV rallies. In Charleston on the 25th, for example, the campaign is holding a live music street fair just two blocks from an early voting location....

Democrats had 20 open offices, over 30 paid staff and thousands of volunteers. (McCain, by contrast, has one Charleston office open and one paid staffer.)

Vogel pointed out that West Virginia had voted for Dukakis and that was considered blue until Al Gore ignored the state.

Economically neglected areas really hate to feel politically neglected as well.

Yup. Obama only needs one of the swing states in order to win. McCain needs ALL of them. While Obama has spent months organizing the most effective ground game America has ever seen, McCain took "red state" support for granted. Now McCain has to spend large amounts of time and money (both of which are becoming increasingly scarce) to undo months' worth of work by the Obama campaign. They're just running out the clock.

Yep. Obama is hedging his bets (giving himself a bunch of scenarios to win, even if one or two states don't go his way) and forcing McCain to drain his resources across a bunch of swing states instead of going head to head in only one or two.

Bill Frist 2008-10-19 02:38:16 PM
And Obama has as secret (or not so secret) little Colon POWell (new window) up his sleeve.

i think that is exactly the strategy. mccain doesn't have anywhere near enough money to battle on so many fronts.

He actually doesn't need any of the ones listed.

If he wins Coloado, Iowa and NM (all of which seem like locks) plus the Kerry states he has already won.... before Va, Ohio, Florida or the rest come into play.

Pretty much. What's sad is that McCain appears to be caught with his pants down in the exact same way that Clinton did. If anything, he appears to be trying out all her old material before the election, and unsurprisingly, they're not working out so well.

An overwhelming electoral victory would also blunt the inevitable "OMG ACORN STOLE THE ELECTION" mania that the Republicans have been laying the groundwork for.

If it's a landslide, then it becomes ridiculous to say it was all because Mickey Mouse voted a million times. "Oh, you think ACORN stole Ohio? Fine, take it back - we don't even need it. "

There'll be ACORN lawsuits and crazy rightwing conspiracy theories aplenty, no matter what. But the bigger Obama can win, the faster that nonsense will go away.

Decreasing marginal returns on campaign dollars. If both candidates saturate a state they'll come out roughly equal even if Obama spends twice as much as McCain. Benefit vs. $ has a linear-log relation.

Spending those dollars in a state that isn't saturated goes a heck of a lot further. Outspending the old man 2:1 in these fringe states produces notable poll movement.

Even if he won't win some of these states (Kentucky, Georgia, Nebraska) by outspending McCain, and even if it doesn't force McCain to spend money there, it still produces poll momentum and panic.

Also look for Obama to start concentrating in areas where the democrats could use some down ballot power congressionally.

And the funniest part is Colin Powell, a formerly-prominent member of the Bush administration and the workhorse of the first (successful) war in Iraq - not to mention a fall-guy and tool for the architects of the second - making a political endorsement will be labeled 'commie' at the top of this page.

McCain's prowess at military strategy isn't readily apparent.

McCain used to have, on his side, "being a nice guy" and "being a moderate Republican." He was pro-choice. And I really don't think the guy is a racist, unlike many people who are voting for him. He's in a tough situation - he made need a visit from Dr. Freud to figure out why he's running such a piss-poor campaign.

Even if North Carolina doesn't end up for Obama (and I bet it will), just seeing NC go blue in the polls is a nice way to start the week.

A wonderful summation of everything wrong with the McCain campaign and the Republican party in this election. Powell looked like he might shed a tear when he was describing the grave of that Muslim-American Iraq vet, and the way the Republican party would treat that sacrifice.
