The fat lady just sang. Good night, McCain.

Very good interview. Powell was eloquent, but it seemed like he was trying to get out everything he wanted to say in one breath. No pausing for questions or anything, just a long speech on the reasons he's voting for Obama.

Wow a do-nothing former Sec'y of state sure is influential to decide an election, isn't he?

And all the liberals who despised Powell are now in love with him. Oh, and race has NOTHING to do with this election.

ZOMG, I totally heard Powell say he's gotta vote for a fellow brother!

Looks like Powell will be getting a new job in November.

You're kidding. I've always respected Colin Powell, even if I didn't like what he said.

Seriously, I wonder if people looking for race vote more on race and imply it as reasons more than the people being criticized. I'm sure race had absolutely nothing to do with it, unless you consider oreo a race.

I don't speak for all "liberals", but I certainly never despised Powell. I was disappointed in the position he was put in... deliberately given bad information / intelligence to deliver to the UN in the run-up to the war, but his resignation after 2004 showed his true feelings about what had transpired.

The point is that if it mattered he'd have said something in August or September and helped push the election over the hill, not jump on just in time to have fun.

DamnYankees [TotalFark] 2008-10-19 09:39:49 AM
Yeah, but he said it to the elite, liberal media - what did you expect?

From CNN:

"He has both style and substance. I think he is a transformational figure," Powell said on NBC's "Meet the Press."

"Obama displayed a steadiness. Showed intellectual vigor. He has a definitive way of doing business that will do us well," Powell said.

Sorry. Your candidate sucks. Even to Republican, retired four-star general who used to be members of the Bush administration.

DeCypher44 [TotalFark] 2008-10-19 09:40:39 AM
I love it. "I never despised him. I respected him. I just didn't like what he said or what he stood for. So yeah, we'll take his endorsement".

Not that I really care anyway. I can't stand either nominee for president this cycle. Not voting for either one.

He does seem a bit late to the party, no?

Carth 2008-10-19 09:40:50 AM
In the interview they just aired on MSNBC he seemed very upset the way the mccain campaign has handled itself.

He said it is actions like accusing Obama of being a Muslim or implying he is a terrorists that cause people from other countries to be weary of dealing with us.

Actually, I'm a liberal and I was quite proud of him when he resigned. Gen. Powell is giving a live interview now denouncing the crazy "let's out the anti-American senators"! Race has something to do with this election but only because the General is still a Republican, he just seems to not like the Republicans that don't like half the country.

AntiquatedThinker 2008-10-19 09:41:02 AM
He pretty much flat out said he was doing this for a job. This is not about race, but money and power. Sad to see him power tripping like this.

He's a Republican, but a moderate one, and an honorable man.

Given the text of the article, Palin is probably what pushed him over the limit.

I don't "have" a candidate. I don't like either one. Voting none of the above this year.

TraeHova 2008-10-19 09:42:39 AM
I was happy to see Powell question McCain's selection of Palin. I was happy to see him condemn the McCain campaign's attacks as of late, especially Ayers.

Finally, I was pleasantly surprised to hear that he felt Obama would operate well on the international stage and approved of his stated foreign policy approach. (I've felt this way recently, but obviously I think Colin Powell is a better judge than myself when it comes to those issues and he's obviously had some access to Obama for first-hand knowledge.)

All that said... I'm not sure this is either the "nail in the coffin" or the "fat lady." Then again, I'm not so sure we haven't already seen that happen, even if we can't pin it on any one thing.

So what? What if, *gasp, he might be qualified as a Secretary of Defense? He could help clean up after the last eight years and restore some of his honor.

I see myself as a liberal and have ALWAYS said that if Powell ever ran for President, I'd absolutely vote for him. Even after the UN fiasco. If anything, I felt bad for him having to be put through that.

Lol, you libs haven't won this thing yet. I took the 5th off from work so I can sit back and watch the meltdown if Barry doesn't win. The race is extremely close and historically the polls have, more often then not, been skewed towards the democrats.
