Yes, we should stick with Coal Power. That'll save the little fishies!

Cooling ponds, especially the really warm ones at coal-fired plants in the mountains, can be really nice for scuba-diving at Christmastime. (Yes, I lead a strange and peculiar life.)

That being said, river fish are different from pond fish, and with a few spillways, filters and perhaps a modest cooling tower (just a little one to reduce but not eliminate the dependence on the river, could probably be bought salvage from a closed coal-fire plant,) I would think about half the fish-eggs and big fishies could be saved.

Then, after the press-releases detailing the initiative go out to the Sierra Club and various pro-fish societies, free tours are offered to local elementary and middle schools to observe how the nice power-plant goes to so much trouble for little fish, and the local stations get warm-fuzzy fluff pieces out of the whole shebang, I would estimate the public goodwill, free publicity and positive advertising value would far exceed the cost.

You can't usually buy that kind of public opinion, but if you put the money into something soft-hearted people love, oftentimes you can.

/if more engineers marry advertisers, you can expect to see lots of cute-fuzzy headlines like that
//bring forth the 'Sappy' tag!

Are you new around here? As long as one fish died, people would still complain.

PsychoPhil 2008-10-19 01:15:17 PM
When Indian point 2 and 3 were being planned, Con Ed wanted to put in cooling towers, but the environmentalists opposed it because it would somehow spoil the view of the Hudson. They also complained Indian point 1 was killing lots of fish, at the same time they were fighting cooling towers.

A lot of these 'environmental' groups won't shut up until we're living in caves, and even then, they'd biatch we were burning trees to keep warm...

exvaxman [TotalFark] 2008-10-19 01:17:34 PM
Scheesh - this opposes yet another study that said that the slight temperature gradient from the water created better spawning grounds for several species.

Local issue is funny - coal plant takes in water from Lake Michigan. Pipes leak, but the power company cannot fix because the pipes run through a couple of farmer's fields and they "LIKE" the leak because they get free water for the crops. Repair guys have encountered "hazardous" conditions trying to fix (like guys with shotguns).

That's the whole point. They won't be satisfied until humanity is non-existent. I'm a pretty big misanthrope, but at least I don't dress it up in platitudes about saving the planet.

"or a baby salmon in San Francisco Bay, drifting a little too close to a power plant can mean a quick and turbulent death."

Uhm. No power plants with water intakes in the San Francisco Bay, at least that I can think of (bay area native here). Sorry. Try again.

oroku_saki 2008-10-19 01:24:36 PM
So slap a few large sponge filters on the cooling system water intakes to keep the fish eggs from getting sucked in. Problem solved.

If people had their power shut off in sub-zero weather conditions due to enviromental wack-jobs screaming, "think of the fish eggs", you wouldn't hear the end of it.

Lake and river cooled plants pull in a lot of water and 99% of it is returned to the lake, filtered. There's multiple grades of screens between the lake and the plant generally but environmentalists still have a heyday. DC Cook gets fined $5000 for every duck that somehow ends up sucked in by the intake.

During my sprint working there, one of the jobs I got to do was emptying the screenhouse baskets, which was mainly silt and zebra mussels but also could include fish. Here's the rotating screens, if you're curious.

The main thing DC Cook was trying to keep out was zebra mussels, which can quickly ruin a piping system.

"a clutch of trout eggs in Lake Michigan"

Trout, unless they mean lake or brook, don't reproduce naturally in lake michigan. And when they spawn (except lake trout), it is in rivers.

Also, trout use fuel injection nowadays.
