(BBC) Strange Religious dispute prevents critical repairs on ancient church. From TFA: "A wooden ladder has remained on a ledge just above the main entrance since the 19th Century - because no-one can agree who has the right to take it down."   (news.bbc.co.uk) divider line 64

FTFA: The Israeli government says it will pay for the work to be carried out if the Copts and Ethiopians can resolve their differences.

Now this is just D-U-M dumb. The whole conflict is dumb, but you don't turn down free major repair work on an ancient building. That shiat is going to be expensive.

Since the children cannot agree long enough to save the structure then they both lose any claim to it.

Take it under a conservativeship and after it is repaired offer a pay per view steel cage death match between the 2 sects to help cover the costs. The winners can continue to live in the rooftop penthouses. The losers can be used to relieve any food crisis in the west bank.

Check Wikipedia (yeah, I know). But there is a picture from the late 19th century that shows the same ladder, in the same place.

That Church should be the basis of a thousand studies on how farked-up microsocieties are. There was a HUGE fracas a few years ago when one of the monks moved his chair into the shade. Several of the other peaceful men of God saw that a territorial infringement and started a brawl.

The right to carry the keys to open the door is a heriditary right granted to one Muslim family...but the hereditary right to OPEN the door belongs to another Muslim family. It's the epitome of insanity.

Since religions tend to take the "long view" of things - I suppose this is what happens to roommates after 1500 years.

Shouldn't all religious repairs go to the Amish anyway? They seem to be pretty freaking good at building stuff.

Two Russians were once stranded on an island for three months. When they were rescued, the search party was astonished to find three magnificent chapels built on the island. When queried, the Russians admitted to having built all three. When asked why there were three, one of the Russians said:

"That chapel over there, he refuses to attend."
"This chapel, *I* refuse to attend."
"And this third one? Either of us would rather be *dead* than set foot in that one."

/Am Eastern Orthodox (in communion with the Russians)

Yep. Somehow, I expected it to be that particular church.

Wandered into it by accident once. It was pretty nice, but I can see why there'd be conflict over a ladder...

Ow My Balls 2008-10-19 11:06:47 AM
FTFA: Within the main building, dark-robed monks with long beards chant and swing incense as they conduct ceremonies in the many small chapels and shrines.

Swinging incense! Funny, I don't remember any physics professors swinging incense in college.

Is there a better example of why the rest of the world should ignore the issues in this area permanently? The retards can't even decide on the moving of a ladder for god's sake.

Funny, Ethiopian Orthodox monks guard some of the most holiest of Holy places...and most do not know anything of it. (Ethiopian Orthodox) Never even heard of it. ( and THEY call themselves Christians!!!! - I kid)

All roads lead to Ethiopia, people.

Haile Selassie I...get to know H.I.M

I've also read that most of the Ethiopian Orthodox churches in Ethiopia are just about in ruin...it's something that should most certainly be looked into preserving. ( and I know people over places...but still)

If it's Jacob's Ladder, they can take it down 'cause he ain't coming back.

spacewarp 2008-10-19 01:03:07 PM
What, nobody ever thought of using two more ladders, one on either side, and one representative from each side climbs up simultaneously, the each grip the offending ladder with one hand, and bring it back down together?

/the stupid, it hurts my brain!

Sodium Benzoate 2008-10-19 01:15:10 PM
This ladder business is pretty hilarious. I can imaging being there, looking at it and having the two sects explain how neither has the authority to take it down. i would discuss the merits of each of their points then in the middle of a sentence grab the ladder and run away with it.

Pointy Tail of Satan 2008-10-19 01:40:38 PM
If they take the ladder away, would it be the former ladder?

They'd probably document it as a religious artifact, then argue over where it should be kept.

I want to read more about this interesting ladder than the two douchebag groups arguing over it.

Two sects? Oh, if only it was that easy. There are at least _6_ sects represented:

Eastern Orthodox (Greeks being the main body)
Roman Catholic
Armenian Aspotolic
Coptic Orthodox
Ethipian Orthodox
Syriac Orthodox

I don't know if there are any Protestant orders involved.

The deal with the ladder is that it's in a public area, so that ALL parties have to agree to any modifications. That includes doors and windows, which the ladder is above. Interestingly, it's clear in recent pictures that there were bars added to the window it's under at some point; why the ladder wasn't moved then is anyones guess.

Ishidan [TotalFark] 2008-10-19 02:50:25 PM
See people, THIS is how some religions think, and THAT is why it is impossible to win once you start arguing with them.

Come together to get work done? Nah, political infighting, expressions of utter hatred, and territorial disputes are far more important.

So the question I have. Are the Ethiopians (who have effectively been squatting since 1970, having locked out the Copt landlords) willing and able to pay for the repairs, and being Copt-blocked? Cause if so, hell...they might as well go right ahead. Like property rights stopped em before.

LobsterSausage 2008-10-19 03:37:29 PM
I think this thread is ripe for a facepalm pic.

Honestly, they should repair it together for Christ's sake (literally). It's as though they are trying to one-up one another to gain favor with Jesus. Saying, "Oh, look at us, Jesus! Look at us! We're the ones who really want to repair this holy site! Those guys over there just want to make it worse!"

I'm a Christian, and I don't want to presume, but it's my feeling that Jesus would just as soon they knocked this crap off, get together, and fix the damn thing already. Or perhaps he'd like to forget the whole painful crucifixion all together. You know; bad memories and all that.

Leave us out of this, thank you very much. This was part of the reason we did away with pilgrimages after the Reformation.
