And by the way, Kookaburra, I'm a 39-year-old white guy from Kansas and I'll gladly defend the artform of hip-hop...just not many of the popular "artists" doing it these days. I'll gladly do the same for most every other music form: country, pop, rock, you name it.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's not art. It's just sad that the most artless practitioners in practically every musical genre are the ones that get all the exposure.

No, but I'm not a fan of rap threads on Fark either. It usually amounts to a bunch of racist jerks coming in and posting how awful they think rap music is. Then when a metal thread comes around, they're the first ones to post pictures of their favorite band which usually consists of a bunch of Euro-trash in face paint looking like a bunch of rejected clowns from a Tim Burton movie. Whatever gets you off. Lil Wayne isn't any more foolish then the majority of metal.

I consider rap and metal to be two asscheeks surrounding the same hairy bunghole. Some artists in both genres have some merit, but most is adolescent crap and shouldn't be taken seriously by anybody over the age of 14.

I think the world needs more illiterate chanting about the pimp game over stultifying, boring, static loops and breakbeats. Also, a little more bragging and self-aggrandizing would be nice. Maybe throw in some threats of violence against anyone who doesn't agree that the rapper in question is the alpha-male. Also, would it be too much for it to be delivered in a dialect completely devoid of intelligible English?

Nah.

That's the idiotic mainstream crap that makes people hate rap/hip-hop music. I wasn't a big fan of the genre either until I heard some of the more underground stuff that actually had lyrics that meant something other than objectifying women and glorifying violence.

How about we pour some wine and listen to classical? My fellow hipster, please tell me what I'm supposed to listen to!! Hello? Why do I have the feeling that the Foo Fighters top your playlist?

sly_madman: How can this be, when Nas came out with an album this year?

Mmm, that Nas dick taste good? Oops, looks like you got something on your face. No, no, right there. Ah, there you go. Seriously though, his new album was garbage.

ridcullylives: Wow! You compared the chorus from his single to the better part of someone else's song!! Aren't you clever!

You know, if you took the time to sit down and listen to Lil Wayne's stuff (I know, right?), you would find that it's mostly humorous and not meant to be taken seriously. I mean, look at the cover to Tha Carter III! It's begging you not to take it serious. It's just pop. Only a fool would take it seriously. So why don't you take your collective heads out of your asses, put down whatever Def Jux barfed out, and enjoy it for what it is - pop music (oh noes! not pop music!)

I'm also going to agree with Glitchwerks, and agree that Fark has an all too obvious bias to anything that isn't "rawk 'n' roll" or metalulz. Another thing - sex, drugs, violence - these are themes prevalent in all genres since their creation. Of course, you all conveniently ignore this when a rock/metal/punk/blues thread pops up, despite how common those themes are. How typical.

Anyways, my point being is, don't take it so seriously, it's just music.

No doubt awarded by the same mindset that gives drooling retards recognition for achieving high grades in school.

When I was in high school, I busted my ass to get on the honor roll, and we had a cute little awards ceremony where we all got pins. They gave one to a kid in our class who could not even hold his head up - he had just about every affliction known to man at the time and was MAYBE one step above Terry Schiavo in her last week of life.

I guess his homework assignment was "Dont choke on your own drool" or "Breathe in, breathe out."

Giving Lil Wayne an award like this is like giving Ed Gein an award for "Most Inventive In The Kitchen."

I weep for humanity..

sly_madman: How can this be, when Nas came out with an album this year?

Well I love Nas as an artist, but that CD was very subpar for him.

Also, why all the hate for popular musicians these days? Isn't it their job to put out and sell music? This goes to show that people like Lil Wayne and 50 Cent who put out lots of "different"(I'll use that very loosley) are good at their job. Yes they still put out mix tapes and do small local shows, but those don't pay the mortgage, feed the kids, put 26" rims on the Impala... They put out different stuff and adapt to the changing times and cultures, so they can continue to keep the job they have. Unfortantly the "popular mainstream" is an everchanging market. This all being said, while I like Lil Wayne as an artist, he would be way down low on my Lyricists of the Year award ballot.

Are you kidding me? Farkers are only biased to certain bands here on fark. Rush, Zappa, Iron maiden and some others. In other words, only bands that are old and whoms music withstood the test of time. On Fark, talent isn't measured in skills. Usually, talent is measured in time. So if you've been playing the rusty-trombone in down-town Chicago since '59, we salute you, Mr.Obscure musician man.

Have you seen the hate Metallica gets around here? Furthermore, the only reason they post their favourite band pictures around here and don't get flamed is that, well, hardly anyone knows or recognizes these bands. Therefore, they haven't got shiat to say about them.
Also, in every single metalulz thread there are farkers who come in and "RAWARARARAWWRRRRR COOKIE ME WANT COOKIE".

So, the bias isn't THAT big. Furthermore, to the guy who hinted to bigotry:

If someone dislikes the style of writing of a particular artist, namely the so-called "butchering of the English" language, it might be that it has nothing to do with the color of said artist's skin. It's dumb automatic assumptions like this that make racism an ever bigger problem.

NO. This is what makes rap so great. Prior forms of music required knowledge of instruments and an ability to have a proper tone. Now, all you need to rap well is the ability to speak in a beat. Mozart ain't go nothing on Lil Wayne.

Heh, I started listening to rap and rock/metal at the same time. This is exactly why I stopped listening to rap. I got my first guitar, took me years to properly play it. Now everytime I hear a "real" band play, I can appreciate their music. Sadly, the turntable and loops, were not attractive to me.

There's albums made with "turntable and loops" which are up there with ANY album made by ANY group you could name. "Endtroducing" by DJ Shadow can sit easily between "Sgt. Peppers" and "Pet Sounds" and anything else you can think of. So can stuff like "Untrue" by Burial which is basically an album made by someone with no musical training whatsoever.

If you don't understand or appreciate the mindset of sample-based music, fine, but get over your "real" band attitude.

Before you get all heated... With "real" bands, I mean musicians on stage performing the songs.
I can appreciate simple music. There are plenty of rock bands that play real simple basic songs. I enjoy a performance of the music much more, than just seeing and hearing a DJ behind a table.

I would enjoy a performance by The Roots who play their stuff live more than ,for example, 50c who often just has some dj behind him bobbing his head. It's just not my thing.

And to the acts you previously mentioned, I don't know their stuff, so I can't give an accurate opinion of them.

But if a noise is made with a device that Music Snob A's parents bought him as a teenager, it is obviously more viable as a form of entertainment (which is all music is) than something else.

Well, there you go again. It isn't necessarily "simple" music. People like Mixmaster Mike, Q-Bert, Cut Chemist, DJ Shadow, etc. are absolutely DEVASTATING behind a couple of turntables and a mixer. Watching these guys is like watching Hendrix, and there's nothing simple about it.

And to the acts you previously mentioned, I don't know their stuff, so I can't give an accurate opinion of them.

Right. Then stop commenting on hip hop and DJ's in general. You can't talk about reggae without knowing Marley, jazz without Davis and Coltrane, rock without Lennon and McCartney.

First of all, you brought "simple music" up first. I followed on your comment about simple music. It's awful nice of you to keep on mentioning all these bands though, even though I already said I stopped listening to this kind of music more than a decade ago, therefore, stating that it's not my thing. After that I gave my opinion on why I didn't like it. You can agree with me or disagree. Ball totally in your yard.

I gave my opinion on why I don't like the music, now you tell me I can't because I don't know those particular artists? Ok, well you're totally right, sir. I'm gonna check out every single hip-hop artist, independent or signed, and THEN form an opinion on the music in general. It's not like you form any generalized opinions ever....

Glitchwerks: Ah yes, another rap thread on Fark. Just the thing for a bunch of ignorant and racist metal heads to show their true colors.

^^^^ oh, wait...you do.

In summary, I stopped listening to Hiphop for the reasons stated above. It's my opnion and I'm entitled to it. It's nice to see someone so passionate about his music, I must say. But I just don't see it your way. I'm not gonna ask your opinion on metalheads, because it seemed you already told me it.
