As a soon-to-be cross-country skier, does anyone have any suggestions of things I should read to learn about technique/skis? Also, what types of skis are good for new snow without any tracks or trails?

Heavenly (Lake Tahoe) has the best views, but Northstar-at-Tahoe has broken more of my ribs (yet has a nice bar on the mountain).

Those are the places the kids from Vermont move to to teach "Powderheads" how to ski.

Apparently someone submitted a link, which was then approved.

this is actually kinda true. if you can dodge the bare rock in the crap heavy grains of wet man made in vt. then you can ski nice conditions also. generally. me, not so much, but i try. basically i'm too old and scared to realize that speed is my friend, so i sink in the fluffy stuff!
/goat + niagara ftw?

What, no skier vs. snowboarder flamewars yet?

hint: they're both fun

What, no east vs. west penis-measuring contest?

hint: nobody has a complete monopoly on steep hills, deep snow, etc...

You're just jealous.

Utah definitely has the best

Don't pack on too many layers - go breathable. Once you get going, you should get a nice sweat on.

Make sure you can get a pair of wool socks on with the shoes without cramping.

One pair of skis should do you for any conditions; X-Country is all about the wax.

Be careful on the hills. X-Country are not made for speed the way downhill are.

And yes, if you're going to be out for any length of time, a thermos of hot toddy is a good suggestion.

In any case, it's great exercise - generally low impact, high aerobic... and a good way to travel around!

MT BAKER WASHINGTON

How can the list not even mention the single best mountain in the country?? It has the north american record for snow in a season for any mountain resort or not (including AK mountains). ASK ANY PRO THEY WILL ALL TELL YOU BAKER IS WHERE IT'S AT. Props to Jackson Hole though... you gotta be a crazy mofo to come up there i.e. Travis Rice

Yes, Utah powder is awesome.
But...if you can ski in the East, you can ski anywhere.

Ice, crud, rain, blizzard (all on the same day)...does more for your overall skillz than sweet smooth powder all the time.

/Snowbasin and Powder Mt are my absolute faves.

Maybe I'm biased because I used to be a lifty there, but I've been to all the major resorts in Utah and The Canyons is still my favorite.
