THIS. Three month old baby and he's got me up right now while I wait for him to conk out after eating. At least he's getting more and more sleep at night. He had seven straight hours a few nights ago. Too bad it was the wife's shift that night. :(

As an obese person with severe sleep apnea with a family history of diabetes and heart attack who rarely gets more than five hours of sleep a night I'm... farked.

Although, the article is sort of specious (except for the car accident thing.) Sleep apnea is aggravated by obesity, and causes a)crappy sleep patterns, and b)a lot of health problems. Seems like the article could just as easily have been "Problems sleeping? Get checked for sleep apnea."

I went to the doctor a few weeks ago because I had strep. He noticed that my tonsils were abnormally large, even discounting the infection. I've since had a sleep study, and apparently I fail badly at sleep. According to my doctor tonsilectomy, uvulectomy, and soft pallet reconstructive surgery usually reduces sleep apnea by about fifty percent, and I even if I got that, I'd still suffer from more significant sleep apnea than most of the population.

CPAP mask for the rest of my shortened life, here I come! Seriously, if people complain about you snoring, but say that you stop randomly, get checked. Take it from the fat guy who a pot of coffee plus two Amped to get through the day.

I take the OSA thing a lot more seriously after my first marriage. My large first husband lost his mind, literally. He started as T2 diabetic and moved on to the shots, and had high blood pressure. He had severe OSA and as his weight fluctuated and time passed he did not maintain or retitrate his machine. He mentally deteriorated and ended up in a coma before he died. "They" said his brain was damaged due to lack of oxygen.
Um, take care of that. :(

Sleep apnea is also a symptom of PTSD. I know someone who suffers from this and have seen him physically and mentally decline because of that combination.

You're completely right. My wife works in a hospital performing sleep studies, and apnea can seriously jack you up if you don't address it. If you have decent insurance, they'll cover the cost of the initial study. After that, you'll usually need to have a second one performed so they can tweak the settings for your mask to ensure you get the proper airflow to keep your airway unobstructed. I never realized what a serious thing it was until she started working in the field, but that mask will keep you from snoring, thereby making you wake up less and get more sleep, as well as feeling more rested when you're done, no matter how much sleep you got. It's a good thing.

To clarify, your insurance should cover the second study as well. If anybody has any sleep/apnea questions, I should be able to answer them.

I try to go to sleep at mignight. But I can't nod off until about 4am, maybe as late as 6:30. Then I'll fall asleep until noon, or maybe as late as 3pm. In order not to miss being where I need to be at 9 in the morning, I sometimes stay awake all night, aware that if I do get to sleep it'll be so late that I'll never be able to get up in time. Then by the time I get home at 5, I'll fall asleep until 8. When I wake up, I only have about 4 or 5 hours until I should go to bed, and I find myself lying awake until 4am. The process continues.

I try to excercise, but it never knocks me out. I feel depressed most of the time too. Not just a bit sad, but really farking depressed. Any tips?

Yep, go to your doctor and explain what's happening and how you're feeling. S/He'll probably refer you to a psychiatrist or other mental health professional. They can really help -- probably with medication to help you start to feel better sooner and then talk therapy to help sort out what might be affecting you this way. Don't be scared or feel ashamed about asking for help. You will feel better and enjoy life. Just be brave and go to your doctor. Things will get better with help.

Pretend you can actually sleep. Be where you would be, and do what you would be doing, if you slept normally. I.e., lie in bed all night and get your ass out of bed in the morning. Your mind and body will be pretty pissed off at you and make you suffer, but eventually they will cooperate somewhat.

But see a shrink like Seacop said -- your main problem is that your mind is staying on overdrive when you should be sleepy, which means you've got stuff to think about but aren't making any progress on it by yourself.

You have what's called "poor sleep hygiene". You may want to get a sleep study to see if there is a physical reason for your issue.

I have sleep apnea, the mask sucks, but wow, what a difference! I feel better than I did for years. If anyone thinks they might have it, it's worth it, I felt awful.

I went for my first study, the doctor mentioned to me how often people come in complaining that they can't sleep but pass out almost immediately when they have a study done.

Why? Because you have a room with nothing but a bed and a nightstand. No TV, radio, computer... NOTHING. The fact is, many people like you would do fine if they simply got rid of the stimulation close to bedtime.

Try this: For the next 2 weeks or so, go to bed at the same time EVERY night, let's say 10pm, then get up at 6am.

Do not nap during the day!!

If you cannot sleep, and you're awake for more than 20 minutes, get up and go into another room and read something (nothing exciting or stimulating!) until you start to get sleepy, then go back to bed and try and sleep. Rinse, repeat.

Do not have anything with caffeine after noon. Do not drink alcohol before bed-time. Booze interferes with proper sleep patterns.

If noise bothers you, get some foam earplugs from the drug store, also, make sure you have curtains that can block out the light. You need to make your bedroom peaceful and relaxing. Take out the TV, the Computer and MP3 players. Leaving these things on does not help you sleep better.

Even still if that doesn't work, get a sleep study. Everythhig I have listed is what they are going to tell you to do anyway, might as well save yourself some time!

See a sleep doctor and a psychiatrist, in that order. You could have either a sleep cycle problem that could be treated with light therapy. Depressed people can have trouble sleeping too. Don't wait, do something about it.

I get 8-10 hours of sleep every night and feel worse when I wake up than when I went to sleep. Absolute fatigue that is destroying my life. No I do not have sleep apnea, sleep study showed no signs of apnea, restless leg, or narcolepsy, but did show zero stage 4 sleep 2 nights in a row. Some abnormalities in blood tests, fast heart rate, low blood pressure, but nothing conclusive. You would think knowing what it is like to not be tired would not be too much to ask, but apparently it is.

All throughout high school and college I was a complete insomniac, nearly to the point of losing my mind. I was taking half a bottle of NyQuil just to get a few hours of unhealthy DXM-induced sleep; the only other option was to drink until I basically passed out. Then, as soon as I stopped growing (about half-way through college), the insomnia completely disappeared. Nowadays I could sleep through a gun battle outside my window.

The human body is a strange thing...

I use a CPAP every night and I sleep so well with it that you couldn't wake me by setting off firecrackers under the bed. Sleep apnea sets you into a vicious cycle. You start getting lazy because you are not getting enough quality sleep, then you put on weight, and then the apnea gets worse because of the weight and you have less energy, and on and on. And I would drink a lot of Mt. Dew to have the energy to get through the day. I was on the edge of being "obese" when I got the mask, and immediately my high blood pressure dropped and I lost weight because I had more energy and just didn't come home and lie around, nor did I feel like I needed sugar and caffiene to make it through the day. You should have energy soon that makes you feel 5 to 1o years younger. I recomend that you take advantage of it and start a daily activity, like walking, but add something you know you can do every day, and add to that only after it becomes part of your daily routine. I started by parking 6 blocks from work, which saved me $90 per month in parking. Then I realized if I walked a little more to the bus stop, I could stop driving, which saves me another $150 or so a month. This all started 3 years ago, and now I ride my bike to the bus stop every work day, then put it on the rack on the bus, and in the evening, I ride home 6 miles. Just the mile trip to the bus stop by bike use to kill me, but the ride home is kind of nice now. I have to find something different for when the weather precludes bike riding though. You will also stop craving sugar as much. If you are in that cycle of binging on sugar, which increases insulin and then gives you low blood sugar, so you crave it again, it is not hard to break once you have enough energy that you don't feel you need sugar just to keep your eyes open. Good luck.

Yeras ago I went to an ear/nose/throat doc when I had this long running cold I couldn't shake. I work in a refrigerated warehouse which don't help any. He diagnosed me with sleep apnea. Did the sleep study & checked out okay. Figured it was from too much coffee during the day.
Did a blood test a few years later when I did my CDL physical for work. Doctor calls me up first this the next morning & said we need to talk. Uh oh. My blood sugar level after not eating for 16 hours was at 349. Doc said he was suprised I wasn't in a coma. I guess i'd been that way for quite a while.
Do the meds now & ride my bike as much as possible and sleep pretty good now!

Only on the day they are going to die. Any other day it's +15% the normal.

Except the auto accidents and falls, every single one of those "reasons" could be the cause for lack of sleep, and not the effect, as the article implies.
