Last but not least, our own state has a doughnut shop that is, shall we say, less traditional? From 6 a.m. to 11 a.m., Monday through Saturday, the Platinum Plus Gentleman's Club in Portland offers topless doughnuts. That's right; your doughnuts are served by lovely ladies in a state of undress. File this one under "interesting," I guess, although there's something vaguely off-putting about being served any sort of food by someone who isn't wearing a shirt. Still, it's different and it's doughnuts, so there you go.

What do they call it?

How about "DD unkin Donuts"?

The "see my piece" quip comes from the following story:

So the guy I know who works at Dunkin HQ in Boston tells me the company has free donuts - any kind you like - and free coffee, including the flavored ice version, all day long.

Three months in after a two donut/two iced mocha-a-day diet in addition to everything else he was eating, he had literally put on 20 lbs. The money quote: "At this rate, I'm not gonna be able to see my junk by X-mas."

If you've got self control, sounds like a great perk. If you don't, though,...

/not "the friend"

Bess Eaton used to have the best donuts in the area, followed by DD. B.E. went all jeebus freaky, and Tim Horton's bought them out. So it is a battle between D.D. and T.H. around here. Dunkies has better coffee, I usually won't eat a donut. But about once every 3-6 months I will have a corn muffin. Mmmmmmmm, corn muffins!

After working at Tim Hortons, where we got free doughnuts, bagels, cinnamon rolls, and muffins... I have been permanently turned off of their products.

Robin's Doughnuts has better coffee, better doughnuts (actually made fresh everyday instead of made, frozen, then shipped like Timmy Ho's) and shorter lineups.

I've had Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts... but really, nothing beats a Bismarck or Fudgebuster from Robin's.

twfeline 2008-10-19 10:40:39 AM
My favorite are "spudnuts."
Made with a little potato flour mixed in the wheat flour, I imagine.
Slightly different flavor than the usual raised donut. Slightly chewier surface.

/I need to find a source for them in the San Jose area.

FatherDale 2008-10-19 10:41:21 AM

I just came in here to say that Krispy Kreme is amazing and is so great, that our average store brand or nameless donut is almost inedible by comparison. That is all.

i.r.id10t 2008-10-19 11:10:52 AM
The glazing on the Krispy Kremes is too sweet. When the "hot donuts now" sign is on, ask for 'em before they get glazed. Slightly crispy outside, fluffy goodness inside.

Hey Mr. Donut Man, who's trying to kill you? I don't know but they better not!

I second that the best doughnuts are indeed from Voodoo Doughnut in Portland, OR. Take a look: http://voodoodoughnut.com/menu.php

Try the O.D.B., it's fantastic.

My favorite part is seeing the tourists on warm sunny days lined up out the door, underneath the theater overhang next door with their kids. Most people do not realize it's an all-nude strip club, in one of the worst parts of downtown. "Worst" in portland ain't that bad though.

Tim Horton's aint bad, but anybody in Buffalo NY must try Famous Donuts. Right on main st., near UB.

/Maybe not the best, but better than anything else I've had.

Wafflenista 2008-10-19 02:54:29 PM
Essentially, Dr. Bohannon discovered a method of masking caffeine's natural bitterness to allow it to be used in food and pastry products, including doughnuts. This bitterness elimination led to the successful addition of the caffeine equivalent of one to two cups of coffee to a single doughnut.

Don't know bout you guys, but I got wood reading this part :x

Donuts. Is there anything they can't do?

Haoie 2008-10-19 03:43:26 PM
Too bad we don't have either Krispy or Dunkin in this country.

Otherwise I'd be in there every other day.

In hindsight, my heart's thanking me.

Joe's Donuts in Sandy, OR. Much, much better. Although Voodoo has everyone beat for exotic variety, no doubt.

KK rules. Yes, they are disgustingly sweet to the point of excess but that's in part why they are so great.

Tim Horton's donuts are pretty crappy but timbits rule.
