Alberta is Canada's half-bred cousin. Sure, in an effort to be sociable, you pretend to admire its belt buckle the size of sewer cover, which it proudly tells you it won in a knife fight at a Greyhound depot in Estevan, but at the end of the day, you walk away shaking your head knowing it's retarded.

Oh, great. More fearmongering about Muslim enemies hiding within the population. STFU, Calgary Herald. The pipeline bomber is most likely some domestic guy like Wiebo Ludwig. Back when he was bombing oil industry sites in the 90s, I think it was actually referred to more frequently as "sabotage" in the media, not "terrorism".

Either these are really incompetent terrorists, or it's some guy who has an axe to grind because the pipeline went through his land, or he's pissed that someone who owns mineral rights is drilling on his property, or it could be someone with a beef with EnCana. Or, since it's a sour gas pipe, it could even be Wiebo Ludwig himself or one of his kids or religious followers.

The RCMP are calling those bombings vandalism, and area residents are claiming it's due to disputes with EnCana.

Ummm no. Americans don't think of anywhere in Canada as cowboy-land. No one in the entire world outside of Canada thinks of cowboys when they think of any part of Canada, Alberta included, unless they follow rodeo religiously. Not many Americans follow rodeo hardcore enough to know about Stampede.

Let's just generalize the whole damn province! That's fun!

Every Torontonian is a douchebag! Everybody from the maritimes is a Newfie and stupid! Every Quebecer wants to secede! Everybody from Saskatchewan plays banjo! Everybody from BC smokes weed!

And i'm going to assume you bring up 'cities built on oil' up as an impartial comparison.

Most people I know are pro-choice, most are against capital punishment. And bible belt? Maybe some of our little towns that have 4 people in them.

And the violent crime rates? Mostly asian gang related.

That's what happens when the economy is good in a province. Everybody moves there. Good and bad.

No, the crime thing is symptomatic of the entire west, including pre-boom. Of the top 10 crime rates in Canada, nine are in the west, from Winnipeg to Vancouver. Boomtown or not. Halifax brings up the rear at #10. It most certainly isn't "mostly asian gang related".

You are taking issue with generalizing the province when comparing to Texas? WTF do you think any comparison between two places does? GENERALIZE. Stating that someplace has the highest gun ownership per capita is nowhere near implying EVERYONE has a gun. It's the most gun-friendly province. Gun ownership is, in general, a point Texans pride themselves on. Your stupid "everyone in Quebec wants to secede" supposed comparison is thus not applicable and an epic FAIL.

Good lord, you are a black hole for logic.

As an Electrical Instructor at SAIT, let me educate you:

Calgary
-------
Economy and Labour

Calgary ranks 1st among Canadian cities in 2006, with an estimated 6.9% Real GDP growth rate.

Calgary is among the most cost competitive cities in the world for the cost of establishing and operating a business. The 2006 KPMG Competitive Alternatives study showed that Calgary has a 5.3% operating cost advantage over the United States. It is the third least expensive of major Canadian cities in which to do business and in comparison to large international cities outside Canada, Calgary comes in second place only to Singapore.

The Boyd Company's October 2004 study on operating costs revealed that Calgary had the lowest operating costs among 52 cities across North America. Particularly, it is the lowest cost city to operate a head office - lower by more than 35% compared to the most expensive city, San Francisco.

Calgary is the third largest civic municipality, by population, in Canada. As of the 2007 civic census, Calgary's population was 1,019,942. The metropolitan population (CMA) was 1,079,310 in 2006, making Greater Calgary the fifth largest Census Metropolitan Area in the country.

As of 2005, Calgary had a labor force of 649,300 (a 76.3% participation rate). In 2006, Calgary had the lowest unemployment rate (3.2%) among major cities in Canada.
Post-secondary Education

Calgary is the site of five major public post-secondary institutions. The University of Calgary is the city's primary large degree-granting facility. 28,807 students are enrolled there. Mount Royal College is one of the city's largest post-secondary institutions with 13,000 students, granting degrees in a number of fields. With over 14,000 full-time students, SAIT Polytechnic provides polytechnical and apprentice education, granting certificates, diplomas and applied degrees.
Quality of Life

Calgary has ranked highly in quality of life surveys: 25th in the 2006 Mercer Quality of Living Survey, and 10th best city to live in according to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

Despite the oil industry's dominance in Alberta's economy, the Mercer Quality of Living Survey also ranked Calgary as the world's cleanest city.

Just so ya know. ;)

As an Albertan I am getting a kick out of these replies, mainly because most of them are feeble.

Comparing Alberta to Texas in the political arena is a fallacy. Yes, both places are considered 'conservative', but Canadian conservative and American conservative are different things altogether. I don't think the majority of Albertans would vote Republican if given the opportunity to cast a ballot in the US.

Saying that Alberta is selfish and protectionist with regards to its abundance of natural resources has some truth to it, but ask yourself - if Manitoba or Ontario was blessed with the oil instead, would they act any differently? Unlikely.

Claims that the West is a haven for violent crimes - whaaaa? Statistics such as '9 out of the top 10 most violent cities are in the West' seems suspect. There aren't even that many major urban areas West of Winnipeg! Methinks this is some 'per capita' claim that really shouldn't be used as a yardstick to gauge how safe a place is. If two guys get shot in a town of 50, that's a murder rate of 4%. The point is that you are no safer in the dangerous areas of Toronto or Montreal that you are in the ones in Vancouver or Edmonton.

/but what do I know, I live in England now

sacrileg: People wear cowboy hats in Calgary and don't get laughed at.

While seeing lots of people wear them might be disconcerting (except during the stampede) - and apparently doesn't actually happen - I'm not sure why a random person choosing to wear one needs to be ridiculed.

I love the Pacific Coast, horrible, horrible Junior High years not withstanding.

I love the Prairie. It's where my roots are, where my wife's roots are, where I've spent more than half my life. It's just a better, more laid-back place to be. Who the fark cares what people wear on their heads?

Exception of course for Calgary. Vile, stinking, evil place, that is, for some reason, brown. And the streets are too narrow. And the numbering system is retarted, when they even bother. And the sports teams suck in comparison with the sports teams from Edmonton.

/I'll admit that the Saddledome has a real nice display for their Cup team
