As I read the article, he was speaking of Miami Beach. Having spent most of my childhood in south Florida, I would heartily agree with his assessment.

Eh... some very nice places in the South.

Nice place to visit, but I'm a New Englander and that's where I'll be buried.

So the next time a Southerner gets into a fight with you over what something is called (like whether a toboggan is a hat or a sled or whether the things in your mouth are teeth or breathing holes or a 7-Up is a 'Coke' or if it's okay to sleep with your cousin), just trust them on this one.

That. They export the real cockbags down here. We try to send as many as we can to the Florida Penal Colony, but they keep escaping.

Which is why so many people move there. Of their own free will.

Of course, the moment I had the opportunity, I blew that whole pop stand and went as far away as I could get and still be in the lower 48.

Well played, sir.

In all seriousness, though: according to Wikipedia, Horlicks is a brand of hot malted milk. From the description, it seems a bit like Ovaltine.

As a Midwesterner who has in the last five years explored the South on various drunken golfing expeditions, I have to say that my stereotypes and assumptions were really far off base.

The places I thought were going to be like "Deliverance" turned out to be full of the coolest people (Alabama and Mississippi), and the places I thought were going to be most friendly towards northerners and more "cultured" (Florida and South Carolina) turned out to be incredibly confrontational and disturbing. South Carolina especially. Jesus. I wouldn't go back to that place if you f*cking paid me.

Of course these are just silly anecdotes and don't mean much.

I have discovered that the nicer they are to you, the more they hate you. And if they start saying "bless your heart," run! I call this phenomenon the Inverse Law of Southern Hospitality.

This is what people don't get about New York. It's not that New Yorkers are assholes, they just don't pretend to care about you. Folks in New York are just indifferent - you have to be in a city with 18 million people. The default mode is to just ignore people.

I hate fake politeness which is less than skin deep.

DamnYankees: you have to be in a city with 18 million people.

Where is the politeness cutoff point? I live in a metropolitan area with over 6 million people, if I'm nice to you it's because either I don't know you, or you deserve it.

As someone whose lived in South Carolina all of his life, and just recently moved north (to Maine, specifically.) I have to say, I like it here.

Admittedly, I'm not all that thrilled with people from Boston, and I'm amazed to see the thermometer drop to the 30s when its still mid-October, but hey, nothing is perfect. I like it here for the most part.

Now if only they had real sweet tea *sigh*

Fifty million people reading The Enquirer barefoot in a Walmart can't be wrong.

BooBoo23: It's awful here in the South. Stay away!!!

I second that opinion....

Headline was a bit misleading though. He wasn't talking about the SOUTH, he was talking about Miami. HUGE difference.

grotto_man 2008-10-19 02:33:47 AM
He made the comment about Miami, not the South in general. Miami is more Caribean/Latin American at this point than American, much less Southern. He could have also just been referring to the climate.

So, for the usual sort of misrepresentation, subby's an ass.

sounds a bit like y'all are assholes, to me. I'd prefer a smile and friendly greeting, myself.

As a native Floridian who spent half my life in FL and GA, now living outside Seattle, i would like to say harumph, harumph! I'm never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever moving back south.

brewks 2008-10-19 02:34:33 AM
Idiots, for the most part (both north and south), but not nearly the nanny state which Mr. Fry's home is.

jee2102 2008-10-19 02:35:35 AM
Riiiight. As someone living in New York for the past six years, I have to say that I have never been happier than I am to move back to North Carolina in December. Don't get me wrong, I love New England and see a lot of similarities between it and the small mountain town in NC from which I came. However, NYC is the stinkingnest hole man has ever dreamed up, disgusting, dirty, and so self-centered its sickening. I have to say that's the one thing I miss most about the South is that the people weren't constantly "me me me!" like the people here.
I feel as if the South gets a bad rap from a lot of people, people who have never left the confines of the northern part of the country except to places that are like the North except with a different climate! (Atlanta and Miami)...really the heart of the South is in the small towns like Asheville, Savannah, and Chapel Hill...yes, we have some skeletons in our closet, and just like you have the guidos in Jersey up here, we have our people we would most likely not want to showcase..but really..from an educated, liberal minded person..the South is wonderful and I encourage y'all who haven't given it a try and have nothing but hate spewing forth to visit at least once.
