Maybe the police's reaction time was down for some unknown reason?

Wow. Before I RTFA I thought it was some kind of snappy headline about some guy named Ron Jamaica or something whose beachfront property was ruined by a strip-mall or something.

But it was literally a stolen beach. I must say, well done, beach thief.

TuxedoTshirt: This can only be the work of Carmen Sandiego.

Well, she did ransack Pakistan and run a scam in Scandinavia.

"It's a very complex investigation because it involves so many aspects,"

Yes, you have the people who stole it, and the people they sold it to. Well done.

Hopefully the forensic tests will turn something up.

It's also probably made more complex by the fact that some of the people involved in investigating it are involved.

Your Village Idiot 2008-10-19 04:23:06 AM
But the deputy commissioner for crime at the Jamaica Constabulary Force, Mark Shields, insisted this was not an open-and-shut case.

"It's a very complex investigation because it involves so many aspects," he told the BBC.

"You've got the receivers of the stolen sand, or what we believe to be the sand. The trucks themselves, the organisers and, of course, there is some suspicion that some police were in collusion with the movers of the sand."

Police said they were carrying out forensic tests on beaches along the coast to see if any of it matches the stolen sand.

Test results were inconclusive, Mark Sheilds will say, then walks away limping. Some will say that the large bulge in his rear pocket causes the limp, but not me.
nope, not me.

FTA: Illegal sand mining is a problem in Jamaica; the tradition of people building their own homes here means there is a huge demand for the construction material.

They build houses out of sand in Jamaica?

zeale: How do you steal that much sand without getting caught? I mean, really .. dumptrucks aren't sneaky.

A few years back, my company was (re)building a tunnel in Jersey City. One mile down the road, another company was redoing a major intersection and building a new on-ramp for a state highway.

During the weekend, someone dumped 250+ truckloads of petroleum contaminated soil on their jobsite. They thought it might have been us at first, because we were trucking out some contaminated railroad ballast at the time.

I don't think they ever "officially" found who did it.
