The older I get, the more bitterly profound that song becomes.
Good call.

"My Back Pages" from Bobfest back in '90.
Quite possibly the very antithesis of Duke.

Awesome indeed. My respect and appreciation for the men on that stage is huge.

Thanks subby

Very nice snapshot of some real music legends enjoying some camaraderie and a very great song.

Kudos Subby

Tom Petty, Neil Young, and Bob Dylan on the stage at the same time. That's a lot of nostril-singing in one place.

Not that I don't think they are awesome.

Steve Cropper and G.E. Smith playing guitars in the band.

This just proves that theory that Dylan's songs are great as long as anybody but Dylan sings them.

Oddly, George Harrison played at Eric and Patti's (George's ex) wedding reception in 1979. During the night's many jams George was joined by Paul and Ringo (John wasn't at the wedding) and they performed some Beatles songs. George and Eric also toured Japan together resulting in George's "Live In Japan" album.

Where is the guitar solo by Prince?

tsferg 2008-10-18 04:33:10 PM
Boooooooooring.

Farkomatic 2008-10-18 04:38:39 PM
That was a lot of awesome.

But I have to say - and I say this as a huge Neil Young fan - Neil Young's lead playing makes me want to drive a nail in my forehead. He's one of the best song writers ever, a great rhythm player, a great acoustic player, a great vocalist, but a shiatty lead player. Please, for the love of god - please make him stop.

man. this isn't that good, guys. rock and roll celebrity is really not the essence of what was good about dylan. its about 1/16th as profound as him by himself in don't look back.

I see what you're getting at. I would rather see Bob Dylan, George Harrison, or Eric Clapton in their prime back when they couldn't rest on their laurels. Mainly, I would like to see Bob Dylan in his prime. I saw him at ACL last year and was disappointed. His voice is shot. I would have loved to see him at the Newport Folk Festival in the late sixties.

Either that is a Bob Dylan lyric or you are having a bad day.

And say what you want about Neil Young, but he's great. Terrific song writer.

I definately know and am a fan of George, Tom, Neil, Bob, E.C.
but...
Who's Roger McGuinn [first vocalist]?

ExJerseyGirl [TotalFark] 2008-10-18 05:28:29 PM
My husband has done live sound for McGuinn's solo act a couple times in the past few years. He is a class act, and very entertaining to listen to.

Inigo_Montoya 2008-10-18 05:31:47 PM

Sorry if I sounded like an AW. It's just that a lot of musicians he works with are dicks. McQuinn and his wife are really nice people and his stories from "back in the day" are entertaining.

I am finally learning -- never Weeners-hand info here on FARK, unless it is bad. Stick to generic "Oh I heard that..."

YEah ... This was prolly submitted dozens of times before.

Lord knows I sub'd it once'

Still ... iconic moment in Rock

Look for (from this concert):

Neil Young: "all along the watchtower" and The (not really) Band: "when I paint my masterpiece"

Nope - the group was George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan.

The Traveling Wilburys, minus two, plus three.

jaylectricity: They couldn't find a better song to encapsulate all that talent?

Dylan wrote the song, and the Byrds (Roger McGuinn's band) had a big hit with it. Neil Young's old band (The Buffalo Springfield) were peers of the Byrds in LA in the mid-60s. Tom Petty is hugely influenced by the Byrds and The Buffalo Springfield. Clapton and Harrison are Clapton and Harrison (enough said).

In other words, it's a perfect song to encapsulate all that talent.

This shows up every few months on various sites. I'm glad it does.

Are future generations going to have all-star concerts anywhere near as cool? Are we going to be looking at 45-50 year old Benji Madden and Travis Barker playing like this?

I hope not.

FireProphet 2008-10-18 07:09:31 PM
GE Smith... I can't think of another human who can so viscerally emotes arrogance. He's like the anti-clapton, Clapton just stands there playing amazing guitar looking like it's no big deal, Smith plays average guitar like he's jesus playing the greatest solo in the history of time.

hng [TotalFark] 2008-10-18 07:12:26 PM
I was at the show... kick, replies, etc...

It was amazing the amount of talent that was there that night. Odd to see that Sinead O'Connor isn't listed on the Wiki page. I guess it was the whole "getting booed off the stage beacues of the Pope/SNL thing".

For me, the definite highlight was getting to see Johnny Cash.

I have a McGuinn story, can I tell it?

He played a club I ran back in 1985. I asked him if he had heard Husker Du's version of his "Eight Miles High". He said he had heard of it but hadn't heard it yet. I took him in the DJ booth and played the single for him, which he listened to through headphones. If only I had his reaction on video... it surprised him but he said he liked it. He asked me if he could have it and like a doofus I said yes... I emailed him many years later and asked if he remembered that, and he said yes he does and he still has the single.

Nice man.

As for the video, usually I hate "let's get everybody onstage and give them eight measures each" but this sounded pretty good.

just out of curiosity, how does it feel to be completely, utterly and totally wrong?

neil young was far and away the best part of that wankfest. that isn't an opinion - it's an unassailable fact.

as for "who's roger mcguinn?" well, you know that song they're playing? well, dylan may have written it, but that version - the one everyone knows - was arranged by roger mcguinn and the byrds. so don't y'all forget it.

You are correct, sir. Neil is the man. I just did a quick check and there are tickets available for the show this Tuesday. Sometimes I wish I wasn't so damn responsible far away.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who's a bit put off by G.E. Smith. Competent guitarist, but catching sight of him creeps me out, every time.

/thanks, subby. Good stuff.

Don't these guys believe in equality? Why don't they let a brother sing?

I've never been a fan of G.E. Smith either, but if Gilda Radner was willing to marry him, he must be allright.
