So if they kept the cameras rolling, it's now a documentary.

This is not surprising. I've been out northeast of the flea market, it's not very governed.

Before this thing gets cranking, my bet is that the social problems in grim suburbs has more to do with racism than religious extremism.

Film makers had been allowed into the area on two conditions - that local people were used as extras, and that meals for the film workers were produced by a local company.

I have a friend in France (not Paris) and he says the same thing. The native French resent the influx of north Africans, and the north Africans are pretty pissed off at everything.
He's a bit of a weird guy (metal/industrial musician) and he says it's dangerous to walk the streets if you look "different" at all, or for women to look too trampy--he's personally been jumped by what he presumed were Muslims, because they didn't like the way he was dressed. Obviously, that's his side of the story. He's a French-native, so it's hard to understand him sometimes, so maybe I'm off on some details, but that's the gist of what he tells me.
He warned me and my wife to not come over anytime soon, as he felt it would be too dangerous for us.

Amusing would have worked for me as well.

"Isn't it ironic that a film crew making a piece on suburban violence gets caught up in the very suburban violence they came to film?"

No. No it isn't.

Can't remember which actor said it, but when in France he was stopped by the cops, so he says, "Why can you, the officer, stop cars/people and ID them without a 'Just cause'?" and the cop says "Because we can".

Remember that when you think Homeland Security tactics are good. It only takes a few years to make the people revolt. Or revolting like the French...

Stupid poor people, lashing out against rich white liberals who only want to show the world the PLIGHT of the downtrodden urban poor, and maybe win a few awards, profit immensely, and impress all the other rich white liberals by how much they CARE. Disgraceful.

Or... "Isn't it ironic that a film project whose intention was to highlight the suffering of those in the downtrodden suburbs, while providing jobs to the local residents would be attacked and destroyed by its intended beneficiaries?"

Or... "Isn't it ironic that a film project bent on showing the residents of this violent town as humans deserving compassion and consideration gets destroyed by those very residents who prove that they are more like feral vermin?"

Yes, yes it is.

To be fair, it's entirely possible that the youths involved had rented Michael or Be Cool the previous evening.

I wonder what ethnicity the attackers were? I'm sure that like last time it will be a mix of white, black, oriental and arabic, proportional to their representation in the population. After all, anything else would be racist.

Nope, still not ironic. None of those things are expected.

Go into a violent area, get treated to violence. Pretty cut and dried there.

If they HADN'T been assaulted and found the people to be completely friendly, THEN you'd have some irony there.

If they actually expected to be exempt from the known violence, then it still isn't ironic because they are either stupid or insane. Insanity != irony.

The "youths" are young muslim immigrants who are violence prone and have no desire to become French. Surprise!, they are discriminated against. Lesson, don't let people into your country who have no desire to become part of your country...no matter how top-heavy your failing socialist welfare state is.

Edd17 2008-10-14 01:01:33 PM
Hardly surprising really, these people were mostly losers in their own country and thought that the only thing between them and prosperity is the Mediterranean. When they get over to Europe and find out moneys not just sitting around for them and there's not much beyond minimum wage or the dole for someone with no education they start to look for someone else to blame.
Those who actually make successes of themselves move into the city and les banlieues fill up with those with no future in Europe and no desire to return to Africa.

Well, to be ironic the outcome would have had to be the complete opposite of what was expected. I'd imagine the reason most here consider this unironic is because even a blind man could have seen this outcome coming.

harlock 2008-10-14 01:04:16 PM
The problem is the film company using a big crew in the first place. That kind of thing needs mimimalist, geurilla shooting. You can make a very high quality production with small cameras and a minimal crew if you know what you're doing.

It's a bit like shrodinger's cat. By observing it, you've changed it. If you come in with lots of production vehicles and heavy equipment, that's what's going to happen.

Of course, past a certain point, angry yobs are angry yobs.

Sand Nubians seemed a little harsh so they opted for the more generic "youths".
