....8-foot-tall bear with a friendly-enough expression and a belly full of bees - 30,000 or so honeybees who live in a hive in the bear's back and go in and out through his mouth - ended up in the Hemkens' driveway, just past the big yellow sign that says "Slow: Bee Crossing.

That's a good way to deter solicitors.

/Cute bear

Or are you gonna release the bears with the bees in their mouths so when they roar they shoot bees at you?

Richard Pye 2008-10-12 05:49:43 PM
That's a crappy looking bear. Hardly life like. If a child did that I'd be patronisingly nice, but this is a grown man. He can do better than that.

In Foxfire 7, i think it is, there's a chapter on bee keeping the old school way. It's really interesting how you keep bees in logs versus the modern hive method.

On making a log truly resemble a bear, he writes, "I started with the ears and snout, as these are the most notable. Get these right, and anything will look like a bear."

Except that abomination in your yard.

it's a grandpa phrase. It means doing odd jobs, projects or hobbies around the house.

In a sentence:

Q: " Dad, what are you doing today? "

A: " Nothing much, just going to putz around the house. "

Skail: No gloves??

The way I heard it, some sissy beekeepers wear gloves, but Real Beekeepers (TM) like the manual dexterity of gloveless, less mistakes, which is less likely to get yourself stung.

The bees know their handlers scent, these are a domesticated species -- humans handle cats, dogs, etc without heavy body covering same deal.

Note: The almost always wear a face veil. Except once on PBS. I saw a guy pick up a swarm from a tree, brae handed, no face covering, and drop the swarm in the beebox. No hive to defend, no young to defend, the honey is all in their bellies, why would they sting.

Note2: I would never do this. I've never been stung, 'cause I'm such a pussy I run from every buzzing insect I hear. If I kept bees, I'd be in total body suit whenever I went near. And probably trip, and farm me and my hives up.

Well I can't steal one from the Big House. That's like stealing from a Church, only worse, because Bo > God.

I want one for my yard. Ideally with Buckeye seeking missiles in the base.

Drove past that yesterday. It's out in front of the Dallas Zoo and right by the highway.

Interesting fact: If you look closely, you can see that there's a small extension to the tongue. It was added after the fact in order to claim the title of the world's tallest bronze sculpture.

Fark you for that pic...I had a nightmare once involving something like that, and I could actually see the bees living in the kid's stomach and buzzing happily around in the acid before they left out his mouth. It's not one I'll ever forget, but I prefer to not be reminded or it either.

And yes, I'm horribly phobic of wasps/hornets/yellow jackets. I'm generally fine around the honeybees and fuzzy bumblebees, but you still won't find me around a hive on my own free will.
