I don't see anyone getting mowed down. Doesn't look like a big deal to me, it's just art.

Still pretty tasteless to the drivers, I wouldn't want to see that shiat. Not sure what they hope to gain artistically or otherwise by it's erection either. Just kinda stupid and tasteless placement, who commisioned it?

You would think that public agencies would learn their lesson and stop commissioning public art from avant-garde, "edgy" artists, and would at least specify what sort of art they're looking for.

At least demand to see sketches and mock-ups of the artwork before it is created and delivered.

"So what sort of frieze is it you plan to submit?"

"Well, it's a narrative about suicide-by-train."

Doesn't actually sound all that close to the one mentioned in the article, there's supposed to be someone with a train reflecting in their sunglasses.

The posted picture...just looks insulting to the driver...for no actual purpose. WTF? "You make our trains run. We commend your service by making Death in your image. Assholes. GBTW"

Iron Chef Scottish 2008-10-12 04:57:34 PM
I would have thought the genocide in Darfur, the clusterf*ck in Iraq or the meltdown of global capitalism would be suitable candidates for 'world's biggest facepalm'. Controversial artwork in London train stations - minor to middling facepalm.

He said the sunglasses image was created in a tragi-comic style and was supposed to be a metaphor for the way people's imaginations ran wild.

He added: "The overall reaction was intended to be thought-provoking and ultimately uplifting," he added.

"The whole relief is about railways, people and journeys.

"I trust the public to be intelligent enough to appreciate the way in which the images were intended."

A facepalm is an "Oh geez, wtf were you thinking?" It's mostly silly/stupid and pointless...somehow reacting directly to genocide with "aw, not this shiat again" seems inappropriate.

Read the article, subby - they commissioned an art work in general, not a specific subject.

As much as I'd like to be a Stoic and say that suicide is always a rational choice, it's often the result of a losing struggle with mental illness, given that many attempts are aborted or are regretted after the fact.

That's not uplifting! Someone should be hanging themselves by tying a noose to a working elevator! Now THAT'S uplifting!

Somewhat true, but this's still like putting a relief of a cab driver having his brains blown out at a cab station, or a cop getting into an accident in a high speed chase at a police station...

Many suicides are not attempted sober either. Some people get drunk and sleep with losers, some get drunk and start fights, others get drunk and try to demolish themselves.

St. Pancras and the attached Midland Grand building are really freaking cool. Google up some images if your interested.

Some sort of abstract homage to the crossing worlds in the train station ala. Harry Potter would be much more fitting for the location.

Here's the article I got it from.^

Also, you can check out the artist's site here^ with a little more info about the work. It's actually called "Underground C.C.T.V", so I think the wider shot of the image is representing the camera culture in Britain, not a pair of sunglasses. Assuming article is assuming.

Suicide: a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Yes, many people who attempt suicide regret it and change their minds before completion. That was mentioned in a thread about someone who lived after jumping from a bridge (last week?). That's one reason they have psych on the gun background check, not just the "thin out the neighborhood" factor. You can't really change your mind when it's all over the wallpaper.

/haven't bought a gun since they started doing checks, but that's my understanding.

No. Also still wondering about a "suicide victim." I guess they meant someone who dies by suicide.

It's not really an attractive sculpture overall and the powers that be had to know that a grim-reaper-running-down-jumper was going to cause repercussions. We can argue artistic merit, but since it's a public department and a public sculpture, they could have spared themselves the hassle by just thinking a bit before rubber-stamping the specs.
