This will be the biggest year for me not listening to terrestrial radio EVER.

Someone's about to find out how it feels to have a pair of Christmas shoes shoved up their ass.

So you're going to start the last week of October instead of waiting till the first week of November like before?

Oh god, please no.

Come one! Remember Thanksgiving? You know, that holiday before Christmas? The holiday that acted as a boundary for the holidays?

Please no...

NeverDrunk23: Come one! Remember Thanksgiving? You know, that holiday before Christmas? The holiday that acted as a boundary for the holidays?

Thanksgiving is becoming more overshadowed by the year. Think about it - it's one holiday that doesn't involve buying tons of stuff (well, apart from the food). No one gets presents, and it's not a big "party" scene. Stores close, you're supposed to spend it at home or with friends, but in private settings.

Halloween used to be mainly a kid holiday, but it's rapidly turned into the second Xmas for the marketers, to the point that I have seen artificial HALLOWEEN TREES for sale at Walgreens (black "foliage" with built in orange lights, on a skull base), people decorate their houses with lights and dioramas and all of it like for Xmas, have elaborate parties, it goes on.

So once the buying orgy for Halloween is over, why, it's time to fire up the Xmas machine. Yeah, never mind the old "no decorations/musicoontil the day after Thanksgiving when it all comes out at once overnight" way.

But for that matter, there were Halloween products in the stores already in late August. It's insane.

/hates shopping
//but can't avoid the supermarket

I like Thanksgiving songs.

101.1 FM in St. Louis has already started the 24/7 Christmas music barrage. They're switching formats on Jan 1, but still, it is way too early.

Last year a station in Indy was prepping for a format switch at the end of the year. While they were getting things lined up, they switched to an all-Christmas format. Starting in MARCH.

They're now an FM-talk station featuring Excrement-in-Broadcasting champion, Rush Limbaugh.

Wow, that was quite the article. Very thorough and well executed.

WTF? So - if I create a blog, post some one-liner opinion about something, I can has FARK greenlight?

WTF?!?!?!

I enjoyed it. Quick and to the point, not a lot of fillers.

worked in a mall for two years....part of that time was spent out in the halls. The day after Thanksgiving on I wanted to shoot out every speaker in the place.

During halloween though, they actually played some really good stuff.

Piss and moan all you want, but that shiat gets numbers. (That's radio-speak for "that creep can roll".)

Yeah, the listeners are mostly grandmothers who have a fluorescent tennis ball attached to their Buick Electra 225's antenna (plus a knitted cozy on the box of tissues in the back window), but their money's as green as anybody's.

TFA in its entirety:
With the extreme turbulance in our economy today, here's my prediction:
This will be the biggest year for Christmas music on the radio EVER.
I don't mean just the number of stations doing it. I mean the volume of listeners finding safe refuge in it.
Christmas music on the radio will be HUGE this year.

Six sentences and no supporting arguments for the claim. Was the greenlight machine left on by accident?

The blogspam-fu is weak with this one.

jerkobson 2008-10-12 08:10:33 PM
That counts as an article?

El Freak I am in solid agreement that that is the only Christmas album to listen to. There be some scattered Christmas singles that are worthy of listen but that album is amazing.

/my original point before that aside was that was not even an article.

tl;dr

Wrong_Intentions: Six sentences and no supporting arguments for the claim.

Context for non-radio people: In most radio markets there's one station in a market that flips to all-Christmas music about six weeks out. Usually it's one of those lite-n-easy stations. Everybody complains, and it SUCKS if you have to work at one of those stations, but it gets big ratings.

GrizzlyAdamsRox 2008-10-12 08:58:54 PM
So they go from playing Christmas music for 1/6 of the year to 1/4 of the year? It really doesn't surpirse me. I was looking in the Halloween section at Target about a month ago and a light-up reindeer caught the corner of my eye. I looked around the corner and shook my head. I like Christmas and all, but we've only had two mornings in the 40s so far this season in TN. I'm not buying Christmas lights wearing shorts.

FrostyTheDJ 2008-10-12 09:21:40 PM
How many Christmas records are too many? Between the CDs & Vinyl I have over 400. Is that too much?

A December snow is fallin'
on the refrigerator in the yard
The water in the toilet's
frozen hard

I been thinkin' on what to get you
even though times are so lean
This Christmas, I'll say I love you
in a way you know I mean

You can smoke in my truck
No, baby, I don't mind.

Baby, you can smoke in my truck
anytime

When I was in college, I took a job stocking shelves at Wal-Mart overnight.

Oh, the horror of Nov. 1-Dec 31. During the day, the musak coming over the speakers is masked by capitalism at work.

At night, hearing Jingle Bell rock 20 times a night can drive one mad. Mad! MAD, I tell you!!!

People still listen to the radio? Why?

hachijuhachi 2008-10-12 10:25:20 PM
I actually like Christmas music. I'm not sorry for it, I'm just a sentimental guy I guess. It does make me mad though, that when they start this shiat so early, I'm tired of it LONG before Christmas has even arrived.

qlenfg 2008-10-12 10:35:03 PM
Around here, Xmas music on the radio means another rock station is changing formats to something infinitely suckier.

At least the local oldies station has adjusted their play list after facing the fact that their Elvis-loving listeners are going to the nursing home and being replaced by baby-boomers like myself.

When I was in high school, I worked at a dinner theater as a busboy (yeah, yeah, whatever), and they were renowned for their Christmas show. In fact, demand was so great they would start it...at the end of September! That was a lovely time of year.
