bring on the Prog haters

This is exactly what I hated most about ELP.

Self indulgent and arrogant crap.

....that reminds me,I really need to get "Tarkus" on cd.

Self indulgent and pretentious fun.

I always found it funny how people hate on long pretentious songs and yet ELP played shorter versions live many times

Those folks should crack a beer and turn up "Benny the Bouncer".

Here is a P R O G band that I thought was every bit as good as ELP but never had the impact they deserved.

Greenslade were VERY tasteful but quite a lot more restrained than ELP.

btw---I always attempt to dominate a "prog thread" here on Fark.

(at least until Dynamite Monkey and Third Uncle Eno show up)

Scottathon 2008-10-12 03:40:04 PM
I've always found "Blues Variation" to be their most rocking tune.

Even though it was probably just a wild rumour, it's too bad HELP never happened.

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-10-12 04:16:10 PM
I've always liked "pictures" live LP better than "welcome back"...
the sound is better, and only has two sides vs. six sides for the 3 LP....
[i found that the majority of "welcome back" was a Emerson wank fest... but Lake's acoustic medley is a bit boring...
the only real good tracks are "Hoedown", "Tarkus" [MUCH better than the lame and limp studio version] and "Karn Evil 9" [same deal... more energy... better general performance than on the studio one]
not to mention the whole "welcome" album sounds like it was recorded from a a back row or a balcony.... although i've heard there's a King Biscuit CD of the exact same performance ---only a single cd, not a double tho --- which has much better sound quality]

I like the orig. Pictures, and I like ELP's version. they rock out wicked-style at a few points...
i wonder how long it took the group to arrange it and stuff before playing it?
I can kind of see how some critics thought they were "raping" the original one tho.... but I thought they stayed pretty faithful for hte most part...

and what's the deal with Emerson and ugly sounding synths?
[there's a few spots on here, and more spots on "welcome" where a certain synth sound is just plain ugly and abraisive and wrong]
that's just my humble opinion tho....
i'm sure there's people out there who like those synths to sound that way...

what's HELP?
Howe, Emerson, Lake and Palmer?
Hackett, Emerson, Lake and Palmer?

NYRBill 2008-10-12 04:26:21 PM
craigdamage: VERY tasteful but quite a lot more restrained than ELP.

but that was 1/2 the fun at their shows, the unrestrained performance. watching them play was better then hearing it

i have a dilly of a pickle:
I saw a freaking great live Carl Palmer drum solo from about 1972/or 1973 SOMEWHERE... might've been on youtube, but i can't find it anymore ..... it might've been on fark i have no idea tho...
i have the live song itself it's from on the "from the begining" dvd... seems like they cut it out before they put it in the tracklisting on the dvd....
has anybody else seen it?
or can someone direct me to where it could be found?

Scottathon 2008-10-12 04:37:27 PM

Or a trainwreck.

I can imagine Jimi setting Emerson's Moog on fire and daring him to play it.

RoyBatty 2008-10-12 05:24:54 PM
That actually seems much LESS pretentious than most of what we get these days. And it seems weird to see these guys actually smiling as they play.

The "HELP" myth was quite enticing.

I remember the "XYZ" rumor too.("ex-Zeppelin + ex-Yes")
It was to be Jimmy Page and Chris Squire with Alan White.
Robert Plant attended one rehearsal but was not keen to the complexity of the whole "prog" thing.

They were unable to agree with management and the project got shelved.

Yeah, that would have absolutely ruled. And I think Hendrix would have toured for a very long time like the Grateful Dead did, and think of all the bootlegs we don't get to hear because he died at 27. :C

I still remember the first time I heard "Lucky Man". Like 1977. I was in high school, went out and bought the album the next day. Worked my way forward from that point. Always found I enjoyed their records more than Yes, but had the chance to see both live and found Yes to be more entertaining on stage. Wakeman and Squire were too fun to watch.

To think we've got a thread nearby where they're biatching about Christmas music showing up too early on the radio...and here it is at Fark.

I dunno.

May be its the haze of nostalgia but that was pretty much fun.

AND them seem to be really enjoying themselves.

One of the few bands I didnt go see, bitd.

Very nice! I'm going to go find myself some more of that!!

Try some of this, or maybe this, or a little bit of this. (pops)

I like ELP quite a bit, and enjoy Pictures of Exhibition a lot, but Nutrocker has always irritated the hell out of me.

Back in my college days, a friend and I used to play open mic nights once in a while. As we were sitting there drinking beer and listening, the guy onstage started playing "Lucky Man", and my friend ran over to his guitar case. He returned with two kazoos. By the end of the song, the guy onstage could barely play due to uncontrollable laughter.

Really? What would you classify them as then? I'd say their prog credentials are as bona fide as anybody's.

Blasphemy.

Ignorant McNugget: Really? What would you classify them as then? I'd say their prog credentials are as bona fide as anybody's.

think of all the good 70s rock bands you can. how many of those flirted with 'prog'? nearly all of them. greenslade is in that unclassifiable area with queen and pink floyd.

Ignorant McNugget: Blasphemy.

i was hoping someone would get that.

craigdamage 2008-10-13 06:46:26 PM
mahavishnunj is basically correct as some bands from the era get lumped into the "prog" category.

Greenslade are a bit more like Brand X or Soft Machine I suppose but they are assumed to be prog because of the Roger Dean album covers I guess. Some "kraut" bands also get lumped in with prog too like Can,Faust and Amon Duul etc...

Wikipedia and allmusic.com do in fact categorize Greenslade as "prog-rock" and or "art rock" but as I stated above,I kinda regard them as more fusion and experimental jazz-rock like Soft Machine and Brand X.

Great bands.
