It may lack the natural simplicity of puddle water and the intrigue of toilet water, but - according to a img1.fark.net-based beverage bottler - doggies have embraced Fortifido.

The American Pet Products Manufacturers' Association projects that spending on pet supplies and over-the-counter medicines will exceed $10.5 billion this year.

Fortifido is available locally at Meijer for $1.49 to $1.99 a bottle.

Seeing how the economy is tanking, I'd say this product will have a life of about 2 minutes. People aren't going to spend $3.00 (local Wegman's price) on a bottle of water for their dog when they're opening cans of Meow Mix for the kid's lunch.

On a related note - Kräuterbutter will sure as hell make a steak better.

This isn't anything new. I used to work at a vet's office where we sold bottled water and additives for water to keep Fido's breath from knocking you over.

But damn. I don't pay $3/bottle for water for ME, much less for a dog.

I don't know--the kind of people a product like this is marketed at probably don't have kids, and consider their pets to be children. And even in rough economic times, there are still well-heeled folks who have money to spend, and less well-off people who will still spend cash on things they shouldn't.

My dog likes water flavored water just fine. I can understand if people want to give them fortified water, even though I wouldn't since it seems like a gimmick, but the flavor is unnecessary.

Mine will drink it, but prefer water that has aired out for a while. Must be the local chlorine load.

Good thing cats don't like most sweet flavors (they actually don't have the taste receptor in their tongues). They way they control their owners, they would all be tubs of lard otherwise

Yeah, but that's without the natural craving of sugars. If cats really loved sweets the same way dogs did...holy crap, cats would be dying left and right of all sorts of diet-related illnesses.

Too true. Though the corn load in their food might as well be straight sugar for what it does to their bloodwork.

Not a chance in hell will I get fortified bottled water for my dogs. The human quality food at $50 a bag for 3 weeks, the joint supplements for the other guy, the tons of treats like chicken jerky for dogs and a rubbermaid container full of toys is more than enough for my guys.

There's apparently other "nut-butters" like...well, I have no idea, but shiat for people with peanut allergies. I assume some may be less fattening and taste similar.

I'm with you on this one. My dogs get fresh East Bay Municipal Utility District water daily. It's better than most bottled water and costs pennies (maybe less) a gallon.

Ja, there's Soynut Butter. It's got a few less grams of fat per serving, but people with peanut allergies (like me) still have to be very careful. Some companies grind their roasted soybeans with - peanut oil! w00t! Anaphylaxis for fun and ... profit?

Expensive tree-nut butters are for people treats, not pet treats. ;) She'd settle for dairy butter, if I let her.

There IS "Gatorade" for dogs. It may be by prescription, though, since vets sell it from the pharmacy. It's frequently used in parvo treatment.

I had always heard that.... but one of my cats goes nuts when he smells anything chocolate. When he was a kitten, I stupidly set an opened chocolate pudding cup (mmmmm, pudding) on the coffee table and walked away for a minute. He crawled up the couch, jumped over to the table, and had his tiny head stuck halfway in the cup.... all I could hear were happy slurping noises. He fortunately did not get sick from it, but since then, the smell of chocolate makes him turn on the charm.

So I bought a bottle of the peanut butter flavored water for my brother-in-law as a gag gift. We all tried it, got a good chuckle out of the idea and all. I thought it tasted like bad peanut butter flavored soft serve yogurt. The dog got the rest, and there's no way that stuff would ever be anything more than a horrible gag gift to me.

Would rather give the $2 or $3 to my local animal shelter! I wouldn't spend that much on a bottle of water for myself, let alone on water for my dogs! They don't care where their water comes from, Christ, they drink out of puddles and toilets given half a chance.

Besides, one of them likes the taste of his own vomit, and the other occasionally enjoys treats from the kitty litter box -- paying for dog water that tastes "good" would be pretty much pointless in our case.

Tap water FTW :)
