The change, however, has been welcomed by many principals and teachers who believe that students should face more consequences for failure.

Welcome to the real world, kiddies.

Don't worry, i'm sure the teachers union will put a stop to it somehow.

Why would the teacher's union be against this? From my understanding, most teachers support this move.

Good! High school diplomas used to mean that people had met a certain standard of education. How often do we see articles on here about how kids in middle school can't read?

portscanner 2008-10-12 10:49:51 AM
All this is going to do is discourage the students. The teacher tells them that they are a failure. How do you think the students are going to feel? This is why schools are in such a mess. Why is it the teachers are allowed to sit there and insult and demean the students like this? Everything should be done to help the children feel good about themselves and show them that everyone can succeed, not just the privileged few in the honors classes.

wingnut396 2008-10-12 10:51:44 AM
Stop the lie that every child needs to go or is suited for college. Bring back technical programs instead of the constant push for more college prep.

Equipment operators, welders, carpenters, secretaries, COMPETENT clerical staff are all needed positions and there IS NOTHING wrong with working those jobs. Many even pay better managing the GAP with your criminal justice degree.

'cuz they would have to deal with the dipshiats for another year in the same class.

Maybe I interpreted TFA wrong, but it seems that people with those so called N-graders would still have to do another year in the same class if they needed credit to graduate. This change stops students from playing the system, since they could just say 'oh, well this grade sucks and I won't get into college with it. I'll just quit rite now lol'

Yes. Because the school system did SO well when they had no measurement for failure.

Its time to radically change the education system in this country. So that no child gets left behind. (yea, I stoled that line, sue me)

The traditional 13 years of before-college education needs to be scrapped. What need to be set up is an education system based on a module completion of basic reading, Science, English Language and mathematics. The time frame for needs to be done away with and school needs to be year round. With subjects in module format students would be required to complete the current educational module before going on to the next one. This would allow slow learners to master subjects at their own pace and fast learners to move ahead of their peer at their own pace allowing resources to be focused on the students that need the additional help. This would also allow students who are proficient in mathematics but weak in other subjects to move on to the next mathematics class while mastering other subjects.

This is just my idea how we should educate in this country.

I am not a teacher or anything in the business.

There are probably lots of things I left out here. Its just a start.

The School Board also had voted that, for the purposes of graduation, failing grades can be left out of the GPA equation.

Then why bother bringing back the "F" that is an "E" at all? Really. they're bound and determined to just be a babysitting service.

FTFA: "The change, however, has been welcomed by many principals and teachers who believe that students should face more consequences for failure."

Sounds good to me. Now if we could just get teachers to face consequences for failure (or at least be rewarded for success) they might actually improve education.

Of course, we can't have that, now can we teacher's union?

hienekenftw 2008-10-12 11:14:45 AM
The return of the E could cause difficulties for some athletes because the school district requires students to have a C average to play.

Aw the poor little athletes might have to do their homework after practice. Maybe they'll learn that life isn't about chasing a dumb ball around.

People like you are the reason why the world is such a mess. The school system should be teaching important issues, like how to get along with your fellow man, gay studies, black studies and proper sexual intercourse procedures. We are cranking out all to many students who are focused on how to build businesses on the backs of the poor and the oppressed and dont have any idea how to intimately interface with their fellow man.

Children are coming out of school, more concerned about the color green than their neighbor's color. They know how to handle a balance sheet, but not a condom. They can do a good job of screwing everyone, but where is the love?

Not as good as the first one, but still 7/10. I'd have given it an 8, except for the assertion about handling a balance sheet when many of them can't do basic arithmetic.

Why would the teacher's union be against this? From my understanding, most teachers support this move.

Because from the union's point of view, the teachers whose OWN performance is taken into consideration and having to flunk students would somehow reflect a downward trend for the teachers. They want don't want their teachers to "fail."

Not all teachers agree with this reasoning.

District officials say former Chief Academic Officer June Rimmer banished the failing E grade seven years ago, in part to help some students meet the district's then-new requirement that students had to have a C average to graduate.

I don't think she thought her cunning plan all the way through

All the issues you bring up while they are important issues should be the parents responsibility.

And Garfield High School Principal Ted Howard II says the return to the E needs to be accompanied by intensive support for students who arrive in high school performing below grade level, so they have a chance to earn passing grades.

i know it's dumb of me to bring this up but just how or why do these kids get to high school if they are preforming below grade level?

maybe that's the problem here.

Because that's the way real life works, and high school is partly responsible for exposing people to this harsh thing called "reality". I believe this type of "education" is directly responsible for the inflated sense of self entitlement that I've commonly seen in the 25-35 year old range.
