Can't say I wouldn't have pulled a gun to retrieve my property, to be honest.

I cant believe the cops did nothing... Just proves once again that cops have lost all common sense and are nothing more than mindless drones for their controllers

I really farking hate tow companies. Luckily I've never once had my car towed for illegal parking, but god damn those companies are pure evil.

In Columbus, it's Shamrock Towing. Anyone that has spent any time at all at tOSU has had a run-in with these agents of Satan.

Pure evil indeed.

Spartan_Manhandler 2008-10-12 09:19:12 AM
I saw dozens of people in orange shirts with flags and "$5 parking" signs in public parking lots. I decided it wasn't worth the risk, and paid the extra $5 to park in the venue parking lot.

Isn't Dallas where they have that TV show, where the police chain tanks up to the walls of houses and literally rip them off their foundatations to catch pot smokers?

Freak 2008-10-12 09:23:56 AM
When I saw the tag I totally expected to read that someone had lost it and shot one of the tow company employees. Very disappointed in you Texas. This was your chance to rid the world of the bottom feeding scum that run tow companies.

Never been booted, but couldn't you just pull the tire, slap the spare on, and then charge them $500 to get their boot back?

The city is probably getting a cut from this. Perhaps they contributed to someone's campaign?

They had a similar thing happen in Chicago. I remember that article but in that case they seemed to target black people.

betelgeux 2008-10-12 09:32:06 AM
This certainly happens all over the place. I do not know how this would have panned out but if I was a member of that police force I would have stopped people from paying the tow company until some lawyer for the city or judge or some member of the board that governs the towing companies' policies to arrive. I would hope the company loses their license and all business partners are black listed from owning towing companies in the area.

I think your plan is full of FAIL. If you didn't notice from the photograph you hot linked, the lug nuts are covered by the "boot".

voodoohotdog 2008-10-12 09:37:48 AM
We had a compnay in London that bought all the prime parking in downtown they could, paved it, put nice lines for parking in it, then towed anything and everything that parked in these lots. Because, despite the no parking signs so many people thought, "hell It's just a minute, I won't get caught." Eventually the city made them put in meters. They just towed you anyways, because by the time the police got there the meter had run out and you couldn't prove your car had been legally parked and illegaly towed. It was called QAP towing. There were runners with hand held radios who called in the trucks and got a cut.

Finally the city just legislated him out of business, but not before his house was firebombed at least twice that I remember.

You would have yelled at by your superiors and stuck on a 3AM traffic patrol on a back road that rarely gets traveled on. Then you'd be biatched at for not meeting your ticket
quotas revenue goals.

Towing companies all pay in. Any private company who's not paying their bribe money to the cops would have already be charged with stealing cars.

Actually, my wife just reminded me what happened to him. He towed a lawyers Porsche and screwed it up. A bunch of lawyers banded together and announced that they would sue on anyones behalf, pro bono. They snowed him under with law suits.

No, most of the time the boot covers your lug nuts. An angle grinder is the preferred method of getting them off.

Sentient 2008-10-12 09:53:05 AM
There's a tow company nearby in Ypsi that does something similar. There's a lightly-posted "no parking" lot nearby the bar district. They come down around 8, park a couple personal vehicles in it, and then just hang around. Other people see the few cars, figure it's OK to ignore the signs, and park. They wait for the lot to fill up, then tow them all.

Where's a mad car bomber when you need him?

Illegally park rigged car. Car detonates when the tow truck tries to move it. End result, very gun-shy tow operators.

I'm sure Texans have enough explosives in their cookie jars to do this.

/don't do this

As mentioned, I think a rather large angle grinder would be more useful..

I can attest to that.

It's damn hard to get someone else's car towed in London (Ontario) now, and civilization hasn't collapsed.

Are Texans so easy to push around? The ones I've met did seem to talk a good fight.

Probably the same company that works the lot next to Tri Sig house. I lived across from that sorority for a few years and people got towed on a regular basis despite a tiny sign that said only girls from the sorority could park there. Keep in mind, the spaces were alongside public spots in the EMU commuter lot next to Pease Auditorium.

Someone had thrown something at the service shack, shattering a window, she said.

That's it? With all those people standing there? I'd have hoped for someone with a junker ramming the fence down and everyone just getting their keys.

Wow! This makes Minneapolis' Northside Towing look like a charitable institution. Not.
