zogby says 6? that means it's either mccain winning, or obama up by 50.

I don't know, it all depends on who actually votes.

I bet it doubles after Obama's 1/2 hr ads on Oct. 29th.

With early voting a lot of places, turnout issues are for Democrats are going to be mitigated. Even if he has that 10-point margin among whites, they're making up a smaller and smaller chunk of the electorate.

Zogby is a fool. I remember 2 weeks ago he was predicting a John McCain landslide though the polls were statistically even. Now that his polls confirm the same Obama trend the rest of them have, he admits that maybe the Ayer/ACORN/terrorist/secret Muslim ploys aren't working.

Heckuva job.

My guess is that the Republicans were planning on bringing up Ayers and ACORN at about this point of the campaign all along. And in a normal campaign year, it might work.

But now it just reinforces the idea that the Republicans have no ideas and all they can do is attack, and voters are tired of it. "Yeah, yeah, sure, he knew some dude who bombed something a long-ass time ago. So how are you going to help me keep my job and house?"

I've seen it on Politico and a few other places, back during the primaries. I think it was a riff on the concern trolls who were "worried" about all the bad news that came out on Obama back in the first part of the year.

Was surprised to see it migrate here.

Most of the things that traditionally keep down voter participation are not going to be in play this year. I think Obama will clear 375 EV pretty easily and will almost definitely have a 60 seat hold on the Senate.

How many samples does Zogby throw out before he gets one he likes?

I think the Republican party polls have been showing McCain pretty far behind for some time now, hence his desperation. Getting an accurate picture of actual the proportions is something the Repubs have done better than the Dems in the past two elections. It leads to more efficient allocation of resources. I'm guessing that McCain pulling out of Michigan is based upon some sort of best-case scenario for him to cobble together enough electoral votes, but I don't see what that picture is.

Rovian 2008-10-12 10:02:45 AM
The only poll that matters is in November. Voting started in my state September 29th. Find your polling place, get an absentee ballot and vote early. Tell your friends. Donate money. If you've been receiving campaign flyers in the mail leave them in public places. Volunteering will probably get you laid.

DamnYankees [TotalFark] 2008-10-12 10:03:42 AM
Rovian: The only poll that matters is in November.

I wish this were true. But polls direct the campaign, making the candidates spend money some places and not others, and encouraging people to volunteer. Good polls can have a snowball effect.

Didn't Zogby's poll have Obama down 2 yesterday? I think an 8 point jump is just a wee bit outside the margin of error on most polls, and is quite telling of just how reliable his poll is. Although I do believe the one that got released yesterday was mostly pre-debate, so i guess it's conceivable that Obama jumped 8 points in the course of a week and not that Zogby pulls numbers out of his ass.

Polls are going to sink some more for McCain when they start reflecting the Troopergate findings and the hate-speech campaign the Republican ticket is running.

This could be a landslide.

Generally speaking, conservative pundits will spin any disadvantage (no matter how large) for McCain as bad news... for Obama.

I've always thought the main thing that kept people from voting was apathy. Thinking that your vote is a lost cause, either because your side can't win or is going to, anyway, plays a big part in that.

A good way to win any election, as Rove taught us, is to persuade the other side not to turn up on election day. Repeatedly emphasizing that your candidate is going to win in a landslide is a good way to do that.

It was my understanding that it came from a lot of reports that would post Obama ahead. Conservatives or Hilltards would counter that McCain/Clinton are really good "as the underdog", so really Obama winning was bad news... for Obama. They'd do the same thing whenever someone major would endorse Obama.

Link (new window) is rather interesting: division in the McCain/Palin camp.

I wonder, though, whether this is real or not. I suspect it might just be talking up Palin's hostility to give McCain wiggleroom in the middle ground.
