The number DOES seem awful low...

TFA doesn't say how far in the past those crimes are. Police dept. hiring isn't so concerned about non-felony crimes as long as they're years in the past. If you want people with no criminal past what-so-ever you'd never be able to staff a police dept.

I'm glad that our police force is comprised of the best citizens out there. Who else but to provide a level-headed and rational approach to law enforcement?

God, it's times like this that I love this country.

nice work from Pennington, again.

It's not in itself disturbing to me that they take someone who was rejected by another police agency. But when they take people who were rejected because they failed the PSYCH exam at another agency, it's troubling.

Actually, depending on the location of the poster have may be correct. For example in Ireland I would say Sears have hats on sale, but here I would say Sears has hats on sale.

In Atlanta I would say that biatch on Peachtree hook me up wif my lid.

Makes perfect sense (and not in the cynical/"ironic" way in which most farkers will likely interpret it). Take a young kid/man who has a run in with police - perhaps it's a relatively positive experience (despite running afoul of the "law") - and they just might think to themselves that it seems like a good career path to take (maybe the arresting officer, or booking officer, etc made a positive impression).

So much for people believing in redemption or second chances, though (if common reaction to these "facts" is any indication).

The officers in the article are most probably Obama voters.

Have you ever been to Atlanta? Try the Black College Reunion and see how many McCain stickers you see on bumpers.

"We would like, in an ideal world, to see every applicant with a clean record, but obviously that's not reality," said Atlanta police Lt. Elder Dancy, who runs the department's recruitment unit.

Let's be careful out there. And with sporks.

Dangerous, dangerous sporks.

Anybody unwilling to risk their life every day for $30,000 a year is too smart to be a cop.

Come to Canada. We aint picky no more. Join the police. Join the army. Join the squads eliminating hookers.. You didn't read that last bit...

Solarex 2008-10-12 12:45:23 AM
I doubt most of these "crimes" are anything serious. You can bet the paper took the most sensationalistic to list individually in the paper and even they were ho-hum, so I doubt there is anything really to the other citations. Probably things like

underage drinking
curfew violation
trespassing
shoplifting
moving violations

You know, stuff teenagers typically do.

Dennis_Moore 2008-10-12 12:45:36 AM
Yes, but do they go around beating the shiat out of citizens while off duty?
That's the Chicago way!

nicoffeine 2008-10-12 12:47:19 AM
The arrests ranged from minor offenses such as shoplifting to violent charges including assault.

Police officers who have made illegal left turns? It's more likely than you think.

Affirmative Action at work - except hiring minorities, Atlanta takes to hiring that other protected group - CRIMINALS!

Read neither article nor headline.

Not ironic.

Makes sense to me. If you are a criminal, the best way to avoid future arrests is to be a cop.

Keovongsa Siharath was arrested in Henry County on charges he punched his stepfather.

With a name like that, he should really have beat his actual father.

I've heard more intelligible names given to Twi'lek.

Yeah but they all drive home to Duluth and live next to the crazy girl who ran away before her wedding, but her parents are rich.
