Meh, this is not special. I replaced the fuel in the tanks with water in 2004 when I worked for Volvo Rentals.

Nice so... how exactly does a car react when it's full of water?

Terrified Asexual Forcemeat 2008-10-12 12:26:19 AM
On Thursday night, police suspect the same thief returned and siphoned out the water, worth about $50, probably thinking it was gasoline.

Two hundred gallons of water stored in a tank also used to store gasoline was worth $50?

This story would have been Farkworthy only if the theif had called 9-1-1 ten minutes later to report his gas guzzler was stalled out at the side of the highway.

It wouldn't be written so well. Also, realistically, the cars of tomorrow run on good will.

Assuming the engine isn't running when the tank is filled, it will start up just fine, and drive for a few meters, cough and stop.

Unless you put some very good mechanics on it quickly, by tomorrow your engine will be a boat anchor.

Usually water stores sell it at 25 cents a gallon. That's probably how they got their figure.

A friend of mine was getting very bad gas mileage from his old truck, since it had over 100k miles on it he thought it was probably dying so he traded it in on a new diesel truck, two days after he gets it he comes outside to go to work and sees his neighbours car sitting a block down the road blowing blue smoke and shaking like it was about to blow up, the neighbour has the car towed in to the shop where he discovers that the tank was full of diesel, turns out his neighbours son was sneaking out at night, driving all over the place then siphoning gas from cars in the neighbourhood to cover up the fuel use. The kid learned the hard way that all go juice is not created equal.

e-Macer 2008-10-12 12:46:35 AM
My grandpa, a farmer from Medicine Hat, Alberta, deals with gas thefts every once in a while. Unfortunately for the thieves, he was a chemist prior to his farming days. He spikes the gas line with a little something (not sugar or bleach, I know that much) after any consecutive robberies, then notifies the local mechanics to be on the look-out.

I can't smell much, but I can smell the difference between gas and water.

water tastes slightly better than gas.

In the song it's sugar in the tank of the sheriff's car, not water. Close enough.

I can't wait until the thieves sue the owners of the garden after they get injured from their crimes. I love how silly our laws work.

Laz Long [TotalFark] 2008-10-12 01:25:24 AM
This isn't a new idea. During the last fuel crises, several farmers that I did summer work for modified their tanks to dispense water. There was a five gallon jug of water (with about 12 ounces of gasoline mixed in) sitting behind the tank. If you didn't know about the second set of valves, you got five gallons of water that smelled like gasoline.

/There was one farmer that had a brand new truck sitting on his property for a couple of months. As I understand it, he talked to the kids dad and they decided that the kid needed to learn a lesson.

The water equaling 50 bucks is done by the same value that police use to value illegal drugs.

Being cops, they then multiplied by $1.5 million and came up with the street value.

I've never really understood that joke, mostly because hydrogen dioxide would be HO2, while H2O would be dihydrogen monoxide.
Those jokers should try and check their chemistry, however I still like the whole fear-mongering thing. "ONOES, it's some evohl chemical that will kill our kids, drive our cars and steal all our left shoes! DO SOMETHING!!!"

So, I'm curious...is it only pseudopolitical extremist trolls registered in 2008 that you ignore, or any account whatsoever less than a year old? For example, my current account is registered in 2008, but only because I forgot my old password after leaving Fark for nearly two years and I had changed email addresses during that time. I'm a centrist more or less, and I tend to avoid the political discussions entirely because they give me headaches.

So do I qualify for your personal banination? Inquiring minds want to know!
