Band remain solid draws, but linchpin festival Bonnaroo, while not completely abandoning its jam roots, expanded to include more mainstream rock acts like Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Elvis Costello and Beck, as well as harder-edged bands like Tool and Metallica.

Yeah, Bonnaroo got popular, it became a sort of Sundance for the music scene. And look what happened to ticket prices.

lots of jamming for most bands is in the same key. phish were a bit different and actually were able to literally jam completely new compositions on a nightly basis. their spontaneity and sheer awesome improvisational skills really set them apart from any other band out there. even as a HUGE deadhead, i'm still inclined to think that phish was - and is - something unique.

Deer Creek, 7/11/00---Possibly my favorite non "event" show (i.e. festivals, New Years, etc) that I went to.

well, on the plus side it will be the best chance to destroy the pop-sellout monster that used to be O.A.R. that we've had since Phish broke up the second time.

I can't stand it when writers try to compare artists like Dave Matthews and Jack Johnson to Phish and the Dead. Just because you get more money from touring than record sales and/or radio play it doesn't make you a jamband...

Well, DMB at least started out as a jamband. They played on the early HORDE tours and were doing shows w/Phish & Blues Traveler years before they picked up mainstream success. Musically, they have always injected improv sections into their shows, even when riding the pop charts. Personally, I've always thought they were hit or miss, even before they polished things up for the radio, but the association is still there nonetheless.

Jack Johnson, on the other hand, can DIAF. He's that guy who's always playing on the quad but rarely seems to make it to class, who all the preppy recently turned to hippie girls seem to love for some inexplicable reasons, and somehow he's weaseled his way onto the festival circuit. The comparison to anything even resembling an actual jam band, however, is non-existent. I guess he appeals to the girlfriend and douchebag demographic.

Doc Strange: well, on the plus side it will be the best chance to destroy the pop-sellout monster that used to be O.A.R. that we've had since Phish broke up the second time.

They're still bringing their unique brand of suck to the masses? I haven't heard anything about these guys in close to a decade. I wouldn't think a Phish reunion would be needed for these guys to go back to bartending at the campus bar or working in the head shop at the mall.

/If I were still young and had more time to get into the newer jam bands, it would probably be Umphrey's McGee, moe., Disco Biscuits, and a few others. None of this wimpy, contemporary college middle of the road crap.

Meh. The jam band movement ended on August 9, 1995.

Hey man, it's like, if that's your bag, man, then totally jam with it.

Now if ska bands make a comeback, it will be college all over again. Should we not have at least 20 years before sentimentality-induced retro movements take effect?

/there is no such thing as counter-culture

Wow, I actually agree with most of that article.

As someone who was immersed in that little subculture for about a decade, its hard to deny the influence they have had on independent music, from the festival scene to pushing the direction of the sound.

I cant wait to hear what they sound like this time around. The '04 summer tour up to coventry was pretty farking amazing.

rickythepenguin [TotalFark] 2008-10-13 12:47:15 PM
hopefully to phish kids go back to phish and quit polluting the post-dead fan pool.

gross generalization approaching: the phish kids don't care about the music. how to spot the phish kid at a ratdog show: he's the one either passed out before the show, or drooling on himself and walking around with no concept of where he is, during the show.

allthingsninja 2008-10-13 03:45:25 PM
I thought that the jamband scene was doing quite well in the absence of phish. It seems to work better underground, without wookies passed out on every street corner.
