The video is well worth the time. Over two minutes of almost unbearable cuteness.

That was very cool subby. Also, if I have my firefox/noscript settings right, thenorthwestern.com required no javascript! Yay! A usable website.

The video is worth the time. Interesting actually.

It's amazing how I can watch playful cubs, kittens, puppies, or otterlets and be completely charmed. I could probably be enchanted by baby manatees, or shark pups or baby bats. They push and wrestle, try new things, flop on their ass and try again. It's adorable.

Yet something kind of makes me cringe when I have to watch baby humans shove each other around and act like dicks to each other (as children will sometimes do). It might be some combination of "I can hear what they're saying to each other" plus the "oh god, I remember having a really awkward childhood" factor, but I just can't get into little kids. It's probably a failing of some sort.

They will grow big, and become huge kitties that eat your face. Good kitties.

WANT! I got to pet a couple of lion cubs in January - what a treat! One of them sucked my finger, too. They were 10 months old (so, about 3/4 the size of adult lions) - just starting to get their "big kitty" teeth in, so the finger-sucking isn't quite as dangerous as it sounds. ;-)

Whenever I see photos like this, I think to myself, "Why have we not domesticated large cats?"

A lot of people like to say that they're wild animals, or that they simply can't be domesticated, or whatever. I call bullshiat on that. Why have we virtually given up on animal taming? It seems like the vast majority of people simply can't comprehend that dogs and cats had to be tamed by humans at some point. I think if we worked at it we could have tame lions/tigers/whatevers in a reasonable length of time, but people insist on vilifying anyone who attempts to work toward this goal.

Clipsy: I think if we worked at it we could have tame lions/tigers/whatevers in a reasonable length of time,

It takes about 10 years of concentrated effort depending on how many years it takes for a cub to grow to reproduction age.. There is a siberian fox that was hunted for it's fur, and a russian scientist decided to breed the animals to make it easier to collect their fur. He bred some of them as a side experiment, selecting friendliness and handling capability over fur quality. Within 2-3 generations most of the animals were halfway domesticated, and actually started behaving like domestic dogs. What's even more curious, they started physically changing into a build reminiscent not of a fox, but of a dog. Their fur was useless because it was like a dog's pelt as well.

So odds are, if we tried to domesticate lions (I wouldn't care to, part of their beauty is their wildness), in about 20-30 years we'd have 400 pound half-domestic cats laying around the house. The cost alone of feeding such animals is absurd. Meat is expensive as is, I really don't feel like feeding Kitteh 50 pounds of cheapo beef at 2-3 bucks a pound, every day.

Besides that, all the cats I've been around are more feral than tame, and when one takes a swipe at me, I am way glad that it's not a 300 pound lioness that's pissed at me.

Have you ever seen someone try to pill a 10 lb cat? Now try imagining that same scenario with a 1200 lb cat - there's your answer.

These cats have been banned from entering Australia. We've already got enough problems with feral domestic cats - feral savannah cats would devastate our native wildlife.

Actually, large cats can eat up to 20% of their body weight when they gorge on a kill. That's a lot of meat (for lions that would be 18-43kg or 40-95lb, though the largest observed amount for a lion is 33kg/73lb). After that they may not eat for several days, however. In general though a lion-sized cat will be fed about 2.5kg (5.5lb), give or take a bit for the size of the lion, daily. The costs are still up there, but not as bad as you make it sound :P. Sounds about the same as feeding a couple extra people for 20 years.

/been in the literature a lot lately
//between there and the zoo kgs are becoming second nature (but I still have to translate for the guests)
