DRTA... Now subby, why would you want to 'weaponize' the vaccine? Sounds like something an evil do gooder would do.

What the hell? Indonesia is not a state sponsor of terror.

if Smbc-comics had a search feature, I'd post the picture of the weaponized smallpox. Which was basically a can of smallpox with a knife attached.

No, and their brand of islam is just about as moderate as can be. Refusing to send vaccines is retarded.

Weaponizing the bird flu vaccine would be hard..... weaponizing bird flu might be a bit easier.

soupergenyus 2008-10-11 06:19:30 PM
The sad thing is that I wasn't shocked that our government would do this. I'm pretty sure if someone wanted to get a hold of some bird flu they would have no problem getting it by swabbing a chicken's ass. There would be no reason to try to get the vaccine and then spending countless years trying to weaponize the extremely weakened form in the vaccine.

Huskadoodle 2008-10-11 06:20:56 PM
God Damn It, If you keep encroaching on my territory I WILL vaccinate you!

YOU WANT THE VACCINATION! YOU CAN"T HANDLE THE VACCINATION!

According to the State Department the State Sponsors of Terrorism are Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan and Syria. Notice we're not fighting the Terrurists by taking out any of those countries.

/Cuba? SRSLY?

Evil Overlord: "Now my evil scheme has come to fruition: I finally have the bird flu vaccine that I need to create a weapon capable of vaccinating ALL OF AMERICA! MUHAHAHA!"

But seriously, don't they realize that considering Indonesia needs a vaccine to combat avian flu, they already have a lot of avian flu around in order to justify it? If Indonesian Super-Terrorist Scientists were working on a way to infect Americans with bird flu, they're already better equipped than Americans are.

xuanzhiyouxuan: No, and their brand of islam is just about as moderate as can be. Refusing to send vaccines is retarded.

This. I lived in Indonesia for about 8 months several years ago-- they're very laid-back Muslims. And on the island of Bali, which is the main tourist attraction, the dominant religion is Hinduism. At least, it was when I was in Indonesia.

Besides, considering how many chickens I remember seeing in Jakarta, that wandered around freely-- a pretty high-population city-- it's even dumber to NOT provide the vaccine.

Runcible 2008-10-11 07:00:30 PM
Hmm, my sentence got garbled. Anyway, my point was Jakarta's a high-pop city with a lot of free-range chickens. No vaccine for that place would be pretty stupid.

spazzm 2008-10-11 07:02:46 PM
Because if there is a bird flu outbreak in Indonesia, that will have no serious consequences for the US at all. None what so ever. Nope. It certainly won't make an outbreak in the US any more likely, because Indonesia is on a different planet, and no-one ever travels between Indonesia and the US.

Idiots.

damiangerous [TotalFark] 2008-10-11 07:05:54 PM

Submitter fail.

This has nothing to do with the US not sending vaccines to Indonesia. It actually came about because Indonesia refused to send bird flu samples to the US claiming a fear that the viruses could be weaponized. When the US Sec of State called that idea crazy, it was pointed out that the US has a similar law restricted the export of vaccines to countries on the state sponsors of terrorism list (not Indonesia).

A much better article (new window).

These are probably the same "experts" that believe in global warming.

/That's gotta be at least a 9/10 right?

lilbjorn 2008-10-11 07:26:47 PM
So why would the Bush administration want to further push Indonesia into the arms of fundamentalist wackos?

whammer 2008-10-11 07:35:43 PM
The bottom line to this is that once the US knows the "actual" H5N1 avian flu strain and clade type, in six months of surge production, it will be able to make 30 million vaccination doses.

Or enough for 1 in 10 Americans. In six months. This means that 9 out of 10 Americans will have to do without any vaccine, even though an epidemic is killing millions of Americans. And 10 out of 10 Americans will have to do without for at least a few months.

So let me tell you how very little sympathy I have for Indonesia not getting any American made vaccine.

But don't be angry with America, because the Indonesians aren't going to get any English, French, German, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Israeli, Canadian, or any other vaccine either. Because they will be just as short, or shorter, than the Americans.

LOL, I like it. Our politicians still have some balls left, I guess.

Actually, it makes sense. Don't help the bad guys protect their own population from a potential bioweapon.

It doesn't make sense in the case of bird flu, though.
