The guy didn't do anything wrong. It's not his fault people actually BELIEVED there such a thing as Bigfoot.

Best evidence for Bigfoot not existing is how the government doesn't investigate sightings, or have reams of documents with blacked out sections on the matter. Like a certain other matter which is often grouped in with Bigfoot...

He didn't ruin his credibility, he proved he was an idiot. He'll be on the stand and the defense will say, "Officer, isn't it true that you're an idiot? I remind you that you're under oath", and he'll have to go, "Well ... yes." Case closed.

Problem is, being in a position of an officer (or any kind of public service, including military), there is an expectation of integrity. Granted, there are many times when people forget that, but being in the military myself, it is an absolute necessity in today's world of skepticism and lacking moral standards. Integrity needs to be emphasized in those careers; when it doesn't, well... we've seen plenty of articles that shows what happens. If he does get his job back, every single piece of paperwork he fills out, every sentence that comes out of his mouth will be tainted by the knowledge that he lied to the entire nation (regardless of how pathetic his attempt was, it was done most likely for financial gain), and nothing he does will be taken seriously by anyone else, including his own department, or the citizens he is to protect and serve.

So, no. He can not has job back.

It's a cover-up. Of course they had to make the real body disappear, only to be replaced by a ridiculously obvious fake to mock and humiliate the people who dare to step forward and speak the truth. To avoid "accidents", the poor guy has to keep his mouth shut, completing the S.O.P. for government cover-ups. Now, sans fortune and fame, he must still eat -- is it too much to ask to let the man eat? Be reasonable, people! I already have Elvis crashing in my garage, I can't take on more victims of Uncle Sam's unjust secrecy-through-ridicule campaign!

Generally speaking, as you go up the food chain, you become less accountable for your mistakes. For instance, a truck driver may lose his career if he is busted for drugs. A physician would probably be placed on probation, and have his license to practice suspended for a time.

There would be if the military was run by ewoks. Bigfoot would be a very serious national security matter indeed.

For whatever reason, I signed up on a Bigfoot sightings forum. Anyway, a few weeks later, I got this e-mail.

ABC'S WIFE SWAP SEEKS DYNAMIC FAMILIES SEARCHING FOR BIG FOOT!

My name is Danielle Gervais. I'm a Casting Producer for ABC's Primetime show,
"Wife Swap." We're currently gearing up for our fifth season and we're looking
for one-of-a-kind families with plenty of personality to take part in the show.
Specifically, we're looking for families who are actively searching for Big Foot
or "Sasquatch." If you are a family who have proof or are involved in a serious
search to prove that Big Foot exists, we want to hear from you! Families who
participate in this documentary-style program are given a unique opportunity to
share their beliefs and lifestyles with another family. Please feel free to
forward this email to anyone you think would be interested in this unique
adventure!

In case you are unfamiliar with the show, the premise of Wife Swap is to take
two different families and have the moms switch places to experience how another
family lives. Half of the week, mom lives the life of the family she is staying
with. After making her observations, she introduces several "rule changes,"
where she implements rules and activities that are important to her family. It's
a positive experience for people to not only learn but teach about other
families and other ways of life. Wife Swap airs on Disney owned ABC television
on Wednesdays at 8 pm- the family hour!

Requirements: Each family must consist of two parents and at least one child
between 6 and 17 and should reside in the continental U.S. (There may be other
children living in the home who are older or younger than the required age...as
long as one child is in the required age range.)

Participating in the show is a very unique experience that can be life changing
for everyone. Families that appear on the show will receive a financial
honorarium for lost wages, time and commitment. Anyone who refers a family that
appears on our program receives $1000 as a 'thank you' from us.

I appreciate you taking the time to read this email and I hope to hear from you
soon. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me! If you're
interested in learning more, please include your contact information.
Thank you for your time,

Danielle Gervais

Money changed hands. I think this constitutes fraud. So no, you can't hold a position of trust.

Wow, you're right, so much could be done. This idea needs to be carefully thought out over the course of many beers.

Weren't there a bunch of college kids who pwned Jerry Springer by claiming to be...can't remember, screwed up in some springer-esque way? They got on his show and basically acted the roles they had cast for themselves.

He committed fraud. He should be in prison, not in a position of authority.

Fraud (legal): A false representation of a matter of fact - whether by words or by conduct, by false or misleading allegations, or by concealment of what should have been disclosed - that deceives and is intended to deceive another so that the individual will act upon it to her or his legal injury.

Yeah, and he'll probably win considering he was fired over little more than a practical joke. Sure it made the Police Chief look bad -- which probably didn't take much if he was dumb enough to go along with it -- but that's life, buddy rough. The so-called credibility of some dink town head cop likely wasn't much to begin with...

Credibility is certainly an issue. When I first heard about this story, I thought "Well one of the guy's is an active cop. Surely an active cop wouldn't be stupid enough to get involved in a hoax, so it could be true."

But no, I was wrong.

Yes, you were wrong. Bigfoot is not real.

And, it doesn't matter if it's a doctor, a lawyer, a politician or a policeman saying otherwise.
In my opinion this particular officer is less stupid than countless colleagues who tase children and elderly, and otherwise abuse their authority without any punishment whatsoever.
But, he has no credibility amongst Bigfoot believers so he must be fired? It was a PRANK! and a funny one at that.

You really think there's a possibility that Bigfoot is real?

Hehe, I just won the Lotto but need someone to help me cash in the ticket because I'm not a legal citizen. If you forward me a few thousand dollars as a good faith gesture, I'll split it with you.

UFO sightings can be human aircraft, often experimental stuff, or even orbiting satellites. The US Gov doesn't have reams of redacted docs on UFOs because of alien lifeforms.

I recall some kids tied a few chemlights to balloons and tied the balloons together. The entire town was convinced there was an alien skyshow from how the chemlights forms triangles, lines, etc, from a few hundred feet above (but to their eyes, tens of thousands of feet above moving at inhuman speeds).
