It's not always cold and dark, and if you do a little research, it can be relatively inexpensive to visit..

Yes. People confuse it with Greenland which is all icy 'n' shiat while Iceland is all green 'n' shiat.

You should probably volunteer to be their chief tourism adviser. They are REALLY gonna need the money.

Given that most of the world hates Americans, you might need more than a pack of smokes.

This article is from Britain. As for Americans, unless you're fairly well off, a vacation anywhere in Scandinavia is not a good idea. Economy problems or no, it is expensive and your dollars do not translate well.

Judging by the look of those girls, you'd best hang onto the cigarettes for bartering.

If you can pull it out you get to run all the Icelandic banks!!

Actually it's just some artwork in a traffic circle in Njardvik, which is about 3km from the airport.

It was amazing when I lived there.. That thing is JUST outside the NATO base gates, and there were people who had been there for 2 years and never knew it existed.. Pretty sad to be in such an amazing country and have zero desire to go out and explore..

oh iceland!
i once had a job in the "costume" jewelry field in n.y. which often required me to deliver some designery "costume" jewelry to clients of my boss. not cheap stuff either, but kind of showy 80's stuff...think dallass tv show. anywho, mrs reuwe (spelling may be incorrect) was the wife of nicholas reuwe, nixon's ambassaror to iceland. this was in the early 80's i believe. she was a larger than life character with tons of gossipy stories to tell. and she liked her cocktails, mind you. they always stayed at the waldorf towers in one of the top floor suites. oh dear, this place was fine! i way young and living in a crappy studio in washington heights, so to see places like this was a real treat. and she treated me like an old friend whenever i showed up. about 3 months after i had last seen her, she was robbed at knifepoint, of a huge diamond ring(real), she was wearing. this was when she was in her suite in the towers. i think it was hushed up. never saw it mentioned in the newspapers or anything. you think they might have a little better security in places like that, don't you?
so, whenever i hear mention of iceland, i think back to dear mrs. reuwe. i think the booze got to her in the end, and helped contribute to her demise.

Yes. People confuse it with Greenland which is all icy 'n' shiat while Iceland is all green 'n' shiat.

Every time Iceland comes up somebody's got to trot that out. Iceland isn't green. Neither is Greenland, but they're different etymologies. 63% of Iceland is tundra... you know, permafrost and the whole nine yards. It's cold. Only 23% is vegetated. There's only one kind of tree that will grow. You're not allowed in the interior during the winter because all the roads are closed.

In closing, Iceland is pretty damn cold.

Hardly any Europeans that I've ever met hate Americans except Arabs/Turks. They hate Dubya, sure, but they're not going to hate you for being an American. Stereotype you as loud, unhealthy, and arrogant, sure, but I wouldn't really call that hate. Of course I've never been to Iceland.

You'll be playing the part of Doctor Philpot Shank, a gadabout young physician with friends in high places and roots in dark corners. Keep your wits about you and you'll spot the clues we've placed between floors 5 and 7 of the Marriot, and don't forget the nightly detectives' roundtable dinner theater where we lend drama to the discoveries of each team, and tally points to determine overall Sleuth of the Ball. It's a weekend of mystery and murder you are obligated not to miss! Enjoy!

Paid for by your HR team building retreat organizer.

Spent an excellent couple weeks there earlier in the year, but can't really recommend it for americans, as the dollar will NOT hold up well at all. We also encountered some backlash from the removal of the NATO base, I think, but never got a distinctive answer beyond 'fark off'. This could also have been generic hate of Americans, but our Brit friends never had any troubles.

Reykjavik is a pretty decent city overall, very progressive. The people are nice enough, but do take some warming up. Overall, I'd say do go, but take your pocketbook.

Well, I can't vouch for the amount of cock-craving, but otherwise you are dead wrong. Iceland is packed to the gills with lanky smoldering beauties, both blonde and brunette.

Think about it: for hundreds of years, Vikings pillaged Europe's coasts and brought back the most attractive women they could find to be their wives.

I've met dozens of Icelandic women, and with one exception, I would do them all again. Twice.

It's been going on 14 years since I visited my ancestral homeland, but at that time Iceland was packed full of hotties. Here in Canada you may be lucky to have 15 to 20 % of the girls being good looking. In Iceland it had to be at least half. That applied both to Rejkyavik and Isafjordur which were the only city and town I visited. Lots of blondes, but by no means was that exclusive. One of my cousins was friends with this gorgeous exotic woman who was half Icelander half Greenlander (Inuit). The girls can party hard, and there isn't a lot to do there, but I can't say there was any better chance of getting laid there than most of western Europe. Being a foreigner helps a lot though! However, being related to hundreds of them, without them having family names, made me understand the meticulous family trees that are kept there.

It's been so long that sometimes I doubt what I saw, or attribute it to my hormones that were certainly more concentrated in my veins at that time, but I'll be heading back to visit this year or next to confirm... carefully... in the presence of my wife.

/too bad about their economy

I never got /any/ sort of anti-American b.s., but then again, being part of the diaspora gets you *LOTS* of points there. When in doubt, pretend to be from Minnesota or North Dakota and they'll treat you like you've been close friends since birth.

Showing up as a loud-mouthed Jersey girl on the other hand will be met with, shall we say, a rather icy reception.
