Their first self-titled album is really awesome, and in many ways ahead of its time

As for Nirvana possibly ripping off "Eighties" , personally i don't think so, the intro riff does resemble "come as you are" but im not sure I would go to a lawyer with this

Judge by yourself (new window)

Wow - I always knew those sounded pretty similar but that's just creepy.

At least he admitted it in an obscure fashion

As I recall, Nirvana wound up paying Killing Joke for ripping off "Eighties". That's awesome that he played it. That was my first thought when I heard "Come as You Are" for the first time.

which sucked, a goddam lazy assed tune if there ever was one.

Are you freakin' kidding me? I was humming "Come as you are" the other day when it occurred to me for the first time it was a rip off of the Killing Joke song. That's pretty coincidental - or zeitgeistal - or something.

Weird...I used to sing the chorus of "Eighties" over the intro riffs of "Come as You Are".

peewinkle 2008-10-11 02:31:25 AM
Killing Joke's first album was at least ten years ahead of it's time.

/obviously
//nice shot, man
///yeah, that was "borrowed" from the first KJ album, too.....

snakedriver 2008-10-11 02:37:38 AM
i was at the show last night and let me just say,

Killing Joke live was farking great!!! better than the 2003 show.

/jaz coleman FTW!
//could have used more songs from the 2003 release.

how about them BLATANTLY ripping off the melvins on 'milk it'?

mahavishnunj 2008-10-11 03:50:05 AM
let me clarify, not killing joke. nirvana blatantly ripped off the whole main riff of 'its shoved' by the melvins for 'milk it'. was there any royalties stuff there or did buzzo just not care?

paulseta [TotalFark] 2008-10-11 04:14:10 AM
Dave Grohl ended up playing drums on Killing Joke's self titled comeback album a couple of years ago as part penance for the ripoff.

I love playing Eighties to some younger musos and have them yell "it's a ripoff of Come As You Are!!!!".

Ah, to be young and not know bands older than you are again.

tailormadebassist 2008-10-11 05:07:58 AM
Never really gave them a listen...think I'll get a couple albums now.

Thank you Fark for turning me onto a band that influenced alot of the bands I love. Yes...I love me some Nirvana.

phlegmography 2008-10-11 07:31:19 AM
These songs are definitely similar, to the point of infringement.

But that avoids the larger issue, which is -- Nirvana was really a rip-off of John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band. And Kurt would even tell you that himself, if he could.

"The Police Picnic" 23-08-1981 Oakville, Ont. - The Grove

The David Benedeth Band, John Otway, The Payolas, Nash The Slash, Oingo Boingo, Killing Joke, Iggy Pop, The Go-Go's, The Specials, The Police.

Good show.

Change you can believe in.
(Not from the Police Picnic).

Oh man, Killing Joke is so great. They are woefully underrated but their influence is undeniable. I hadn't heard that Melvins song before the comment was made above, but yeah, I can see how Nirvana ripped them off, too.

sarcasm, my friend. i'm still a little snow-blind from my last visit there.

but Hazel and Iggy? i salute you. that's gold right there. and needs to be photoshopped.

A band, ripping a riff from another band? Say it isn't so!

Man. Even Brian Wilson did this. Rock and roll is essentially built on this sort of thing.

Marshmallow Jones 2008-10-11 10:40:11 AM
LOVE KJ's first album. 'Requiem' is fantastic.
Jaz is a weird dude, I think he moved to Iceland or Greenland and holed up for a few years in the early 80s, he was sure the nukes were going to start flying in 82 or 83.

Good thing KJ never made it as big as Nirvana, they'd really be feeling the hate. Because, you know, any band that makes it big becomes really cool to hate. Especially on Fark.

Marshmallow Jones 2008-10-11 10:42:27 AM
Forgot to mention, Millenium from around 91 was sweet too. Excellent heavy riff.

craigdamage 2008-10-11 11:36:57 AM
Has anyone ever heard "Fanfare For The Millennium" composed and orchestrated by Jaz Coleman with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra?

It is quite surprising and astonishing.

It is one of the best examples of a non-classical dude attempting classical music I have heard. I am already a big fan of both Frank Zappa and Duke Ellington who did some great classical compositions.(also,"Half Mast Inhibition" by Charles Mingus is superb)

Another cool discovery is "Scherzo a la Russe" by Igor Stravinsky originally composed for Jazz orchestra.

Now if we can just get a classical composer to do some Punk.....

the two songs may not be similar to the point of infringement, but the main riff to both are basically the same.

I'll check out KJ now

seen their name around now and then
but no clue to the music.

I am no stranger to Elfman's superb compositions but I must admit I had no idea the guy from Pop Will Eat Itself was still active.

It's just a slowed down version of "eighties". Good job Kurt, suck it, haters.

Pf. There's no way Killing Joke's case would've gotten as far as court, there's a mild superficial similarity at best. I actually thought the "zomg it's the same riff" thing was true, until I actually heard the Killing Joke song. There's nowhere near the same level of resemblance as, say, between "Wild Thing" and "MMMBop" or "Save Tonight" and "Closing Time".

Nice of the Nirvana boys to give an old band they liked a free gift like that.
