Obama didn't even raise the question. He was asked about it.

Do they not realize how desperate their canned responses sound?

I think I've watched this particular Obama/McCain battle with a pretty impartial eye, and I have to say that those comments by the McCain campaign are pretty insulting to this person of average intelligence.

FTFA: "Barack Obama's assault on our supporters is insulting and unsurprising"

He's not "assaulting" your supporters, he's disparaging your campaign for taking the easy road and inciting the "angry mob" mentality rather than talking about actual issues.

Diogenes [TotalFark] 2008-10-10 05:15:31 PM
The McCain campaign and everyone associated with is below contempt at this point.

They want to get as dirty as they possibly can and while denying Obama's ability to defend against it. If that doesn't speak to character and judgement, I don't know what does.

I suppose instead Obama should be thanking McCain and Palin everytime they inspire someone at their rallies to call Obama a traitor or terrorist.

Everyone's been waiting for McCain's fabled temper to reveal itself. It has. Just not in the way anticipated.

Ms.Maus 2008-10-10 05:17:52 PM
I didn't think anything could top the whole 'well if he'd (Obama) just done the town hall meetings like I asked, the tenor of this campaign would be different' but I was sorely mistaken. What a bunch of hateful turds.

McCain campaign spokesman Brian Rogers adds in another statement: "...It is clear that Barack Obama just doesn't understand regular people and the issues they care about."

So "regular people" shout "Terrorist! Traitor! Kill him!"?? And Barack Obama is bad for thinking this is not cool?

FARK OFF AND DIE IN A FIRE, Brian Rogers.

Nothing say's "not bitter" like attempted murder either way.

Anybody remember last time, when the dem's were losing, and all we were threatening was a move? Most of it was bullshiat, but some people did. I think this could be the same, only with guns.

Because if he stood up and said, "Hold on right there. There is no place for that sort of language or attitude here. We should instead be challenging Obama on __________" he'd have to fill in that blank.

I don't think there was anything racial to it. It's the exact same "elitist" attack they used on Kerry, with the same language.

If anything happens to Obama then McCain and Palin need to be held accountable for inciting this hatred and saying nothing to stop it.

Diogenes: That may indeed be their intention, but they're playing with forces they can't control

I don't think they're really inciting anything so much as they are just channeling sentiment that has been there the whole time. The people yelling these things at McCain rallies would feel that way no matter what, and have no doubt felt that way since they first heard of Obama. That's why I think it's a bit hyperbolic to say McCain/Palin are in any way increasing the physical danger to Obama. That's giving them credit for way more control than they really have.

When McCain/Palin failed to respond (either during the incident or later, in a statement) to the rally member who yelled "Kill him!", I stated that I didn't believe the campaign was implicitly condoning violence. I did, however, believe they were creating an atmosphere which tacitly condoned violence.

I've changed my mind. McCain has become even more beligerent and more outspoken in portraying Obama (and, now, his wife) as a terrorist and anti-American. He has become a rabid evangelist spreading a message of hate and divisiveness. He is no longer providing merely the atmosphere of violence - he is creating the mind-set towards violence.

I would hope that the real GOP members would step-in and stop this madness.

By not trying to stop these outbursts they are implicitly endorsing them. It is very close to outright saying saying, "hey, it's okay to say you want to kill Obama at a rally. Go Us!"

That type of implicit approval might very well lead to action from this type or right wing nut.

The McCain/Palin campaign should be stepping on this behavior. When the guy in the audience shouted out "Kill him," that was an opportunity for McCain to take the high road and change the tone by letting the crowd know there is no place for incitement of violence in his campaign. By allowing this comment to go unanswered, he gave a sad indication of how low he is willing to go to win.

I've been a longtime admirer of McCain, but letting this kind of behavior slide is unacceptable.
