Why did I know it would be Mary Mitchell after seeing the Sun-Times tag and reading the headline?

Why would it be awesome if she lost too? The pig is wrong here and it would be great if she kicked his fat, porcine ass....

I disagree with her to certain degree. It's not merely white privilege that's afflicting Limbaugh. He's becoming marginalized as a poltical hack. People aren't buying his tripe seriously anymore. Not even to hate him. He's being psychologically tuned out.

Wow, considering the argument she's making, you'd think she'd have some minimal awareness of how horribly racist she's being. I guess self-awareness is out right now for talk radio personalities.

"The epitome of white privilege"? Give me a goddamned break. If she'd stopped at pointing out that Palin's behavior is not appropriate, I'd be on her side, but as it is I'm kinda with subby on this one.

Beyond how the words "white privilege" make you feel, do you understand what she is saying, when she uses those words?

I agree that she could have made a point without using those words, but more because she should have known the reaction that using those words would produce. Not because she is wrong.

Yes Rush is a big fat druggie. But to suggest that there is some white conspiracy propping him up in the name of "white privelege" is absurd. Commercial radio lives and dies on ratings -no ratings, no Rush.

/Most of the white racism in America exists only in the minds of blacks like Mary Mitchell.

It's not a white racist conspiracy. It's that, as one of America's great moralizers, his legal and drug problems haven't hurt his listenership, nor the mainstream media's acceptance that he is the compass of the American right.

A black radio host in his shoes would've been eaten alive.

Purely my subjective opinion. I just don't get the sense that he carries as much influence as he used to, with listeners and haters alike. His schtick is being OBE: overtaken by events.

I don't know if his actual numbers reflect that. And I really don't care. He's part of our collective problem and I will gladly forget him once he's gone.

Yeah, I've written letters to editors about this. It's as if some journalism schools are now teaching that the function of a period is to signal "look out, here comes a new paragraph!"

Having read the article, I find it quite sensible. She also has the honesty to say explicitly that the squealer, tho' he dance around to avoid the word attractive and successful African-American, endorses racial bigotry in his followers. Some would avoid that.

Good for her, I say.

Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton caught on camera buying coke!, R Kelly has fans (he is a black leader). It is not a B/W thing.

Because "black" was in the headline. All she writes about is race.

That is absolutely BS. The fact that they're bringing up Obama's middle name, trying to link him to terrorists, etc are because it's got a racial undertone to it all. However, most of America isn't buying into it, but the significant size of the hard conservative base are, and you can't tell me there's no racism in that demographic (hell, like the article suggest, just look at the McCain and Palin rallies).

Jim_Callahan: Wow, considering the argument she's making, you'd think she'd have some minimal awareness of how horribly racist she's being. I guess self-awareness is out right now for talk radio personalities.

As a white guy, I don't see the racism on her part here. I don't have a problem with her pointing out the existence of "white privilege" because denying it exists would make me look obtuse.

Does anyone here think that if this columnist went all Imus and called a boy's college lacrosse team a "bunch of stringy-haired crackers" that she'd still have a regular column?

Or that if Obama was videotaped 6 months ago being "faith-healed" like Sarah Palin, having demons and witches cast out from his body that he'd still be in contention for office?

No. And this woman didn't get all "screw you white people with your privilege," either. She just noted that race is a major factor in determining how much people can get away with in our society. If you have a problem with that, fine, but don't try to pretend she's making sh#t up.

Seconded! Of course Limbaugh exploits his listeners' prejudice by stoking it with code words. Only a dyed-in-the-wool ditto-head would deny something so obvious.

I think this blogger might be on to something: Is John McCain Trying to Get Obama Hurt? (new window)

BlorfMaster 2008-10-10 03:19:23 PM
The squealer was among the first to demand that Barack Obama (Barack, Rush, not Barry) denounce his former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, for comments deemed offensive to white people.

Someone find me something where Rush is actually saying its offensive to 'white people' and not Americans in general.

JimmyCarter'sSecondTerm 2008-10-10 03:19:39 PM
As I noted in a column I wrote in 2003 (the real source of the squeals I'm now hearing, since Limbaugh didn't address a single issue I raised in the column he attacked), despite Limbaugh's drug addiction, he was still allowed to return to his popular radio show.

That, my friends, is white privilege

Who are these black radio show hosts who have been kicked off the air for having a drug problem? Are there any radio hosts of any race who have been kicked off the air for drug problems? Isn't addiction a disease that we need to help people overcome?

While conservatives like the squealer can't get enough of ridiculing black youth for honoring bling bling over intellect, what did they think McCain was doing when he tapped Palin for VP?

It didn't matter that she is probably the most inarticulate politician ever to step up to the microphone. She had the right amount of quirkiness and naughtiness to draw in the "American Idol" and reality TV crowd.

I get it.

I get it too.

This black woman is going to try to counter limbaugh's supposed racism, with a racist stereotype of what she believes is white culture. She doesn't "get" the cultural draw that people across America feel for Sarah Palin, so she dismisses it as not her culture. Anyone supporting McCain is obviously a racist who is voting on cultural appeal, no way they could have fundamental policy disagreements with Barack Obama. They are just uninformed rednecks who might as well be voting for a vanilla milkshake over a chocolate one. A person with any intelligence would obviously choose chocolate, they are voting against their best interest. I know what is in their interest more than they do.

/If only they could see the light

Good editorial. I wouldn't have thought it controversial to observe that Limbaugh benefits enormously from the towering edifice of double standards known as white privilege, or that racism underlies much of the rage directed at Obama. But then, I have a history of underestimating the depth of denial and sheer stupidity that right-wingers are capable of manifesting, especially where their objects of worship are involved.

This could probably sum it up.

Relax your face...really relax it. Then, start shaking your head back and forth as fast as you can; it should make your cheeks and lips flop around a bit. Then, while doing that, scream "LIBERALS".

Alternately, you could take your index finger and move it up and down rapidly against your lips and yell "DEMOCRAT PARTY."
