Hell, I'll send him 10 bucks if he promises to never appear in the news for any reason ever again.

And he learned about it from this guy:

I would have thought his method would've involved pillaging villages and cutting peasants in half with an axe.

So is that supposed to be a question? Or is the caption just really excited about remembering when Metallica rocked?

Well, the NYT link requires registration...

This article here says:

In 2002 Ulrich sold five works at a Christie's auction in New York, including Basquiat's "Profit I" (1982)

/heh, heh .."profit I"

14 million for that?!! I was really traumatized when I saw what those 'boxers' did to poor R2D2 - there is no way I want a constant reminder on my wall! pass ...

/ puff, puff, pass.

Its cool, but I could find better things to drop $12-16 Mil. on.

Isn't that incredible? This particular painting is valued so much more than thousands of paintings that I (and many others) would consider to be superior.

The art world confounds me.

You're kidding, right? That photo of Matt Lesko has more artistic value than this turd.

Have to admit, even after all this time, and the downloading music business/napster, I still don't really see why Lars was wrong, or why Metallica so hated. I mean, what a musician/businessman says won't impact me one way or another or alter my downloading (if I do that at all..) habits.

He's a guy who made a product, and people were stealing it. Then those same people were getting angry when he said they were stealing it.

Dwight_Yeast 2008-10-10 06:04:53 PM
The Art market is still strong and the rich have lots of money, so it's a good time to sell.

There's also still the linger question of the length of Basquiat's shelf-life.

Looks an awful lot like something by Basquiat.

On another note, Lars needs a lot of money. The gay porn he has imported is supposed to be really expensive.

/not taking a shot at being gay, just relaying a story told by a former Metallica employee

SharkTrager 2008-10-10 10:28:48 PM
Whoa. Actually RTFA and I got it right. I'm shocked.

Maybe so, but you have to learn to roll with the times. People reacted badly, he either has to learn to deal with that. Or not.

Lars is so not metul. I bet he even drinks milk sumetimes and tells his kids he luvs them. Loser. Metul rooles!

I liked my headline better:

Dumbass - "Some kind of monster tries to sell his art collection while investors wonder for whom the bell tolls. Hope he makes some scratch from that Basquiat."

/Lars is the ass-master of puppets

This.

Lars wasn't wrong. He saw what was coming and took a stand early on. I have no idea how much of a bastard/egotist he is since I've never met him face to face, but he's a kickass drummer and I've basically enjoyed Metallica's music from Day 1. I do however want to strangle whoever mastered Death Magnetic and allowed it to be released with such hideous sound quality.

People think they are entitled to steal music just because there are programs out there that make it very easy to do so. They also love to biatch and moan about everything on the Internet. Metallica bashing got old years ago.
