That was beautiful.

I think my favorite shot was looking more or less straight down the body of the rocket as it was gaining altitude, and seeing the island and the whole world shrinking as it went up. It really was beautiful.

Very cool. Good find, subby ;)

Very cool. I watched it live a couple of weeks ago and it was a nail biter the whole way. Amazing that they launched this thing with only a crew of like 20 or 30 people total on the ground.

Actually, I'm subby in this case. I have a mole at Space X. :) I'll have a blog post up about it tomorrow.

Very cool with The Crystal Method music.

Now that I have watched that twice on the website and once from the higher quality download I just noticed was available, I have to say again how amazing that was. Not just the whole Private liquid fuel vehicle into orbit thing, but the actual video itself. The music, the scenes that were chosen, the timing in relation to the music. And I loved the way you could still hear what was being said and sounds of the rocket on takeoff, instead of straight up replacing the soundtrack with pure music.

Technical question though. At around 1:40, just before the stage seperation, what was going on there? Was that just the way the exhaust looks under those conditions?

One of my favorite Crystal Method tracks from Vegas, and very appropriate. Great video. Makes me wonder why the international press is congratulating China so much for doing a spacewalk we and and the Russians did back in the 1960s when we have American private companies doing this.

I'm gonna take a hit and watch it again.

one bauble at pre-separation (its supposed to slew some at that point to deflect first stage, but it swung twice) the slickest launch I've seen since my first Apollo viewing.

Now, all they have to do is figure out a way to make a capsule that weighs 670 kilos fully loaded, and you could heave a human into low Earth orbit with that launcher

If you consider that the Mercury capsule weighed just about twice that, but was built in the late 1950's and had to use bulky and heavy equipment, and they didn't have light but strong materials such as carbon fiber that we have today, it should be doable.

It would certainly be an engineering challenge, but it should be possible to put a 78 kilo human into orbit with enough consumables for 12 to 24 hours.

TheOmni: Technical question though. At around 1:40, just before the stage seperation, what was going on there? Was that just the way the exhaust looks under those conditions?

Yeah, at that altitude, there's no atmosphere to constrict the exhaust plume, so it spreads out into a wide blossom. You'll see the same thing on NASA launches too -- the exhaust is long and narrow at launch, then as it climbs higher it spreads out and becomes nearly invisible.

That's why the Apollo Lunar Modules never left a crater as they landed on the moon (which the moon hoaxers like to claim as evidence the moon landings were fake). In a vacuum, the exhaust plume spreads out enough that it doesn't concentrate its thrust on a small spot, so no crater.

Um I think the reason they are congratulating china is because space walks are hard maybe? Yes we and the Russians did it back in the sixties, but no new country has done it since. It's great that private industry is able to get a rocket in to orbit or is able to send a person in to low earth orbit but lets not belittle how much more difficult it is for attempt extra vehicular activities. It cheapens the what we did back then and it cheapens what China is doing now.

Nah, I think I would have put it to this song,Link (new window) but then I am not that huge on techno. I am however a huge Rush fan.

Awesome.

After viewing that, I updated my resume and submitted it for a couple of their job listings. I have a feeling that as a somewhat recent upstart they won't be able to offer a fully competitive pay and benefits package, but if they can I will definitely consider a career there.

It's in at a little less than 250MB, but it goes fairly quick.

Keep 'm coming, good Sir, keep 'm coming ... oh: and nurture your network. Thank you very much for what you're doing!

This is awesome! Go Elan!

We really need this guy, Czar Putin is going to try cut us off from space, believe it.

Great song choice, Awesome launch.
Triumph after adversity is very sweet to witness.

I'm a big fan of the cots program and looking forward to the day when we can tell Mr. Putin specifically where he can shove his rockets.

Or, you could just wait until their larger launcher goes online early next year... along with its 7-person capsule with ISS docking capabilities the year after.

cool video!
i would like to have heard the mission control people a little louder in the mix. the sample of the guy saying "you got it" was a bit distracting after a while.
beautiful vibe from the song and video though! inspiring!

very cool, but why did they use music from a webcam and not just find the mp3?

On the contrary, congratulating the Chinese for a simple spacewalk cheapens what we all do when the rest of have been doing it for 40 years, all while doing things like building the ISS and servicing the Hubble. Don't get me wrong, I think it's wonderful the Chinese are in the space race as well, but when I read an opinion column on the BBC website claiming that Western capitalism is on the way out because the Chinese are doing spacewalks I feel compelled to say something.
