Say what you want about Green Day's earlier work, but American Idiot is a good album.

A Decade of Green Day by Spaztictacular

1994 "Dookie" - Man, Green Day totally sold out

1995 "Insomniac" - Green who?

1998 "Nimrod" - Who HASN'T heard "Time of Your Life?" I can't believe how mainstream Green Day is now

2000 "Warning" - Huh? Green Day has a new album?

2004 "American Idiot" - I can't listen to Green Day anymore, they are too popular

Lather... rinse... repeat

/American Idiot was fantastic
//As was Stop, Drop and Roll
///Haven't heard of it? You were never a Green Day fan in the first place

Wow, even the paint-by-numbers punk bands can be music snobs. I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Can't we just enjoy the odd tune from an artist anymore?

/not a Green Day 'fan', in the 'I-liked-them-when-no-one-else-did Radiohead douchebag fan' style
/can't deny that American Idiot was a good album.

I think Holiday is the best song they have ever written.

Kerplunk-Insomiac were just great albums. Lots of good stuff from the other albums though. American Idiot was just great stuff.

One of the best bands I've ever seen live. Go see them if you haven't.

I'm going to get this record though. It sounds great!

Insomniac was huge where I was, then they kind of drifted off into obscurity... then in 2004 I was chatting with a blind teenager who insisted their new album he'd just downloaded was 'awesome'. I didn't believe him. It turned out to be huge, somehow.

Goddamn that's a lot of suck to pack into 10 years. At least they named their first completely shiatty album correctly as a warning to anyone who liked them up to that point.

I didn't want to warm to them, but "Jesus of Suburbia" is a fantastic indictment of the clash of youth and the consumer culture...just brilliant.

Go ahead and laugh, fellow nobodies

1039 Smooth Out Slappy Hours - Had it on tape. Don't remember it.
Kerplunk! - Great friggin album. Still had its punk roots and you can tell they were just having fun with the music.
Dookie - Ultimate Album. Great singles, great album, just amazing.
Insomniac - Had a few songs that were good. Past those it was a very "bleh" album.
Nimrod - My third favorite album. Not a great album, but some good singles on this one. It loses points for "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" Side note - that's the full title. That 'good riddance' part makes me laugh whenever anyone ever plays it in a situation that's supposed to be happy and memories and so on. It's called reading between the lines, or in this case reading the friggin title.
Warning - Mellow? More pop than punk? What happened here? I get the feeling that it's become more of a job for Green Day to write music.
American Idiot - Didn't like it at first, still don't really like the album. A few songs have grown on me though.

That being said, the expectations for a new album are low, so they could surprise.

OMG Green Day got huge, they suck now!

I liked Dookie, didn't like much of anything since, but I think American Idiot is a great, great album.

Apparently you've been outsmarted by my profile page. What that has to do with the topic at hand anyway, I have no idea. At least try to place punctuation in the proper place in a sentence. While you're at it, an ellipsis only uses three dots, not four.

Now run along and stop pretending your login is some clever pun no one could ever possibly get and not a stupid misspelling that ruins the whole joke.

The most punk thing in the world to do is to bow to the pressures of internet music snobs to retire.

(same goes for "the most metal thing to do" for Metallica haters)

Oasis totally copied the chords of Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams." Ever since then, I just can't take them seriously as artists.

As an old bastard who grew up through the 70's, I think the entire American Idiot album was one of the best ever done. I liked Holiday so much that it used to wake me up in the middle of the night. But the rest of the album was awesome as well.

All the haters are all the time complaining about groups having one good song on an album with 10 that are crap. But when someone comes out with 8 great tunes and two that are crap, they are hated for another reason.

I have no problem admitting I think Green Day is in the same league with the all time heavyweights when it comes to writing and selling great music. Fundamentally, if it has melody and it rocks, I don't care who it is, what they are saying, where they came from, or who they are being true to. I just want a rocking melody and that's what Green Day does for me.

Having said that, I like the tune Pulling Teeth almost as much as anything else they've done. Melody that rocks with great harmonies.

There is at least one person in the world who is on EXACTLY the same page as you with respect to Green Day.

Back in the day, a friend's mom worked for WEA and got us tickets to a GD show in Dallas (nimrod tour). It was the absolute quietest show I've ever been to. The PA was about as loud as a normal show during intermission. we were sitting not too far from the stage and I could talk to the guy next to me in a normal voice. I was about 21 at the time, though, and too cool for school. Now I would give up everything to be able to have nothing and just go to school full time.
