Subby wants to believe...in the freedom of music

Well the glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity so don't hold your breath.

Teddy you must put aside the alienation, get on with the fascination, the real relation, if you will.

Oddly, I was expecting some sort of mysterious appearance of Peart's visage in the lamp post along the lines of alleged images of the Virgin Mary that pop up. My worship of Rush was about to be elevated to a full-blown religion.

John Chapter 11:

39 Neil said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.

40 Neil saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of Geddy?

41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Neil lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

43 And when he thus had spoken, he played a most righteous Drum Solo of Life and then cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Neil saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Neil did, believed on him.

Actually it's a good dig against the Music Industry. They were pretentious assholes, but I guess marriage has taught them that they aren't God anymore and they are actually pretty down to Earth it seems. If only Geddy wouldn't "sing", however.

Yeah and I get what they're saying but the lyrics are so farking cheesy they prevent me from appreciating the rest of it. But Rush fans don't need my approval. In fact, my approval would make them less cool.

I love this thread. Yes, Rush can be pretentious, but they are the best band out there musically, IMO. Don't like the lyrics? Put on "Leave That Thing Alone" and get back to me. Besides, some of us don't mind the pretentious lyrics.

As a lover/hater of Rush who lived in St Catharines for almost 2 years, I'm really getting a kick out of these replies.

\Actually didn't know that's where Neal was from until right now.

I agree.. I can't stand bands that actually know how to play their instruments.

And those songs are so long!

Apparently, according to this thread, 'pretentious' means to be a highly skilled and respected musician and/or someone who actually reads a lot of books.

Dude.

"Each of us, a cell of awareness--imperfect and incomplete. Genetic blends with uncertain ends, on a fortune hunt that's far too fleet."

They've gotten much better, but for you to say that Neil Peart is not pretentious a little naive (Lee and Lifeson are not pretentious--just listen to the Rush album with John Rutsey on drums). The guy is a very skilled musician and quite well-read despite not having a high-school diploma, but these things and pretentiousness are not mutually exclusive. He's gotten much better, and most of the absurdly pretentious songs came in the late 70s and early 80s, which is where the most widely recognized Rush songs come from. But even Snakes & Arrows is his attempt to tackle religion in the socio-political environment of this day and age. That, my friends, is pretentious.

THE RIVER!!!
