I wonder if he'd be so jovial and flippant if he found out that his parents were dead.

I've been an Al fan for years. The guy's not just pretty consistently hilarious, but he's clean without being lame. Plus, he's a really nice guy who genuinely cares about his fans, his band, and his career. So I think it's pretty great that he can do this, given the way the music industry runs now. He had this to say on his blog:

"One of the hardest things I've had to deal with in my career is keeping my material topical even though I only release albums every 3 or 4 years. Now, with the advent and popularity of digital distribution, I don't have to wait around while my songs get old and dated - I can get them out on the Internet almost immediately. It kind of boggles my mind - I thought of the idea for this new song a week ago, and next week it's getting released!"

Hey...like him or not, that's pretty cool for him. So, even though that T.I. song is an irredeemable, culturally-devoid piece of shiat, I give him kudos for spoofing it, and getting his version out so fast.

Not to mention he is, bar none, one of the best live shows I've ever seen.

He also did this with the "You're Pitiful" song he wrote and recorded, then Atlantic Records, not James Blunt, decided to pull permission to put it on his album.

Also the download link contains some NSFW links, so beware.

Seconded.

I understand if someone doesn't care for his music. Humor is subjective. But I'd be happy to fistfight anyone who disses his work ethic.

I'll win, too.

I recently had a Professor who is a member of the 501st Storm trooper Division play a show with him. They brought out the troopers during the Star Wars songs.

Bastard got to meet him after the show. I was so jealous.

Since he has lasted longer than a lot of the people he's parodied, I have a good feeling he will.

Besides, why ten years? Your kid's almost 2 as it is, probably another 4 or 5 and he'll be able to appreciate Al. By then his new album will even be out, just considering how long he takes between albums.

Love this new song and love Weird Al. I'm a 3 time concert-goer as well, and I agree his performances are awesome! If you ever get the chance, trust me, go.

I'm sad that I've only been to 2 Al contests. Sadder that my signed by him + Jim West guitar was stolen a few years back. If he's anywhere near you playing a show, GO!!!

I love the Weird Al of this and "White n Nerdy". It's one thing to write/rap a song with a certain rhyme scheme and topic, but to be able to redo it the whole thing using the same rhyme scheme but about an entirely different subject matter AND make it funny...

Definition of pure lyrical genius.

I'll have to get this... my interest in Weird Al has waned a bit since the most of the songs he parodies are songs I hate, but I still like him. It's been a few years since I've seen him live.

I went through the sign-up and payment process with iTunes specifically for this one song. And I likely won't purchase anything else this way until Al releases his next song.

Just goes to show the power of Weird Al.

More Al-love here. Been a fan since '79 and "My Bologna".

No kids of my own, but a little boy I used to babysit learned to talk while listening to my Weird Al cd's. His first word: "Yoda. Ya-ya-ya-ya-Yoda."

/brushes away tear of pride.

Absolutely. It doesn't hurt that Chamillionaire is extremely humble and has a great sense of humor. Sick flow to boot. People hear songs like "Ridin' (Dirty)" and assume he is some sort of mindless gangsta (the song is really a commentary on racial profiling), but he has an unbelievable amount of dedication to his craft and his fans

Does it seem to anyone else like pop music has sort of left him behind? In the '80s and '90s his originals (or 'style parodies') mostly mimicked the music of that time (Oingo Boingo, Talking Heads, Devo, Thomas Dolby, later on Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, They Might Be Giants, etc.) but since the new decade he's done more stuff like Frank Zappa, Bob Dylan, Sparks, Brian Wilson. The ratio of current styles to classic styles has sort of flipped on itself.

/Probably just me

Actually, I get exactly what you're saying. I've actually been "catching up" with his stuff recently, both relistening to his earlier stuff from when I was a kid and his later material from when I had quit paying close attention. With the older stuff I'm definitely picking up on things that I didn't notice before and how much it really fits into the music of the '80s. ("Dog Eat Dog" is practically the great lost Talking Heads song.) And I've appreciated some of the bold moves on his last few albums, esp. "Bob" and "Genius in France," because they really show the range that he's developed in his later career. Plus how can you not love a song made up entirely of palindromes?

Another thing I've learned to appreciate about Al is that for almost thirty years he has been able to not only write clever lyrics for both his parodies and original tunes, but he has also (along with Rick Derringer in the old days) been able to mimic the production of an impressively wide range of hit singles over the years, originally done by a number of recognized producers (Quincy Jones, Eno, etc). That's gotta count for something right there.

/I also have no idea what the song he's parodying sounds like, but I'm off to listen to both now
//Didn't know "Ridin' Dirty" either

"What's it like to have a closet full of wife-beaters, but no wife?"

I've seen Al in concert 5 times now, including the last tour. Each time I dragged someone new along, and each one of 'em thanked me for it. Those who have been know, and those who haven't are really missing out. HE'S THAT GOOD.

Al's versions of songs whether in parody or polka form were the first incarnations of them I had ever heard. Each album had an era-generic collage of songs that I would have to ask my dad about, and then he would either pull out the record with the original track on it or we would drive to the used record store to pick up a copy. Around 1992 is when "Off the Deep End" came out, and by then I was finally able to teach my dad about some of the source material.

Miss you, dad.

/actually dad is alive and well

g-booby: "What's it like to have a closet full of wife-beaters, but no wife?"

Actually had some people walk out the last time I saw him when he asked "What's your favorite sexual position?" "P-Diddy style."

But the K-Fed one is by far the best. "Oh I'm afraid your 15 minutes is up."

Saw Al at the OC fair last summer - hilarious.

He sang pretty much every song I knew, and some that I didn't, ABSOLUTELY one of the best concerts I've been to - Smells like Nirvana was unbelievable AND included him actually gargling.

Some people were actually freaked out when some guy was flying an RC helicopter in a field behind the stage - it was made to look like a UFO.

Well, there was "Close But No Cigar," which was a CAKE style parody (and awesome). I always enjoy the style parodies, because he seems to save them for the artists he actually likes.
