Oh, man, did I miss the news headline stating that Rakim is dead?

Wait, he's not dead?

Then fark you, Vibe poll.

Shouldn't it be "Suck it, Lil' Wayne" seeing as he is consistently referencing himself as the Best Rapper Alive?

Mugato [TotalFark] 2008-10-07 06:38:31 PM
Hmm. And here I thought he was just Vanilla Ice with Tourette Syndrome.

Zofryer 2008-10-07 06:47:18 PM
If he was a black rapper he'd only be average.

You also can't spell BEETHOVEN'S NINTH without BENT HE INVENTS HO.

Yeah. Someone ought to fix that.

Q-Tip, Ghostface, Del, Chuck D, Talib Kweli, Black Thought (Roots), and KRS-One strangely enough all seem to be alive too. Odd.

I'd say that Eminem is pretty damn talented when it comes to rapping. He'd have my vote.

I am a fan of Mr. Mathers, but I wouldn't go that far.

Furthermore, I refuse to take seriously any declarations of "best rapper alive" until some criteria are established (e.g. flow, content, freestyle skills, etc).

Gunny Highway 2008-10-07 08:59:36 PM
He is good and is one of my favorites.

I would also go with Redman and the GZA

Rap today is to music what wrestling is to sports.

Fluff and in your face but not really any substance there, especially now.

Don't all rappers refer to themselves as such?

i would buy 15 albums from the first one to refer to themself as 'the most mediocre rapper alive'

AMAZING!

creepy jackalope eye 2008-10-07 10:16:52 PM
Their starting pool of 64 was pretty flawed. I love me some Lauren Hill, but she hasn't rocked a mic in years. Ice Cube doesn't belong there either. 15 years ago he would have been in the final 4, but there's been too many years and too many shiatty movies between then and now. Some o' them fools are fly by night, flash in the pan chumps. Some notables missing are M.E.D., Aesop Rock, Murs, Aceyalone, M.F. Doom, Gza, Slick Rick, KRS One, Talib Kweli, and Kool Keith. I haven't read Vibe in 10 years or so. Looks like I'm not missing much...

strongbadd 2008-10-07 10:19:09 PM
MF DOOM, Madlib, Wale, Black Thought, Nas, Slug, Jay-Z, Wyclef Jean, Ghostface, Raekwon, GZA, Andre 3000, Immortal Technique, Talib Kweli, Mos Def and Q-Tip all disagree with you.

Wolf Flywheel 2008-10-07 10:33:45 PM
Hey, am I too late to jump in here and mention some obscure underground rapper that no one has ever heard of to impress people?

Wow. Eminem?

barf.

Even mainstream rap has so much better to offer, not even getting into the underground scene.

It's never too late to show how 'underground' you might be. I myself am a fan of DJ Scribble Dibble the Accounting MC Spectacular. You have never heard of him, he is from Canada

Aesop Rock consistently leaves me sitting dumbfounded. No other rapper I know of does that.

I dont think so. Most of the rappers people have named are pretty well known if you are interested in the genre.

Wolf Flywheel 2008-10-07 10:47:45 PM
I'm kinda partial to Eli. (new window)He's the second contestant if you can make it through the intro.

I'm not interested in the genre, I'm just a music fan, and I've heard of all those listed. And many of them have worked with rock acts we all love.

If you actually listen to hip hop none of the rappers in this thread are obscure or underground.

Eminem is respectable.

He is no Ice Cube, but he is straight.

/ducks

satanicsantoku 2008-10-07 11:49:55 PM
in em's defense, homie is talented. he really is.
on the downside, his lyrics are bullshiat and he's the biggest A&R whore this side of Jay-Z.
really, vibe? farking really? when nas/rakim/RA the Rugged Man/that kid who sat behind you in bio lab in high school hears about this, he's going to be PISSED.

I'm guessing that's Atmosphere, who is indeed the best white rapper alive. Very, very talented.

bostonowns 2008-10-08 12:16:22 AM
em, jayz, mos def, nas, method man

to be the best u need

freestyle skills
written
charisma
longevity
record sales
multiple styles of flow
battle rap skills
topic range

a very short list that qualify for all of those

keepitcherry 2008-10-08 12:16:39 AM
atmosphere is the group / slug is the rapper. and he sucks. as far as white rappers go, there are a ton of people who stand out in my mind, but ra the rugged man shiats all over eminem.

Eh...he's actually biracial. One of his parents is black, I forget which. He definitely doesn't show it. But, yes, I agree, he is very, very talented...and very, very hawt.

bostonowns 2008-10-08 12:19:55 AM
hip hop purest i would add krs1, rakim, guru from gangstarr, common

new school pop hiphop id add lil wayne n kanye

underground id name a lot of the aforementioned in this thread

underground boston rappers: mr lif, edo g, 7l n esoteric, crumsnatcher, slayne jus to name a few local heros

Savoir-Faire 2008-10-08 12:21:26 AM
I don't listen to Hip-Hop, so I'm a bad example. However, I hear stuff by Atmosphere that has brilliant lyrics and wistful feeling that is just...thought provoking. Some of the lines are just funny. All around, he's great.
