I was born in 1980. I hated the 80's growing up and through high school.

Looking back, the 80's kicked ass.

Weird? Sure, but not any more or less weird than things now. I like that the 80's wrapped up weirdness, newness, politics, technology, and fun into one big ball of 80's coolness.

Uncool then, way cool now. I love it more and more.

Oh, give me a break. Yes, you're right, but each decade (in my short near-30 years experience) has it's own flavor. The 80's flavor is distinguished and will never again be experienced in the lifetimes of anyone who experienced the 80's.

I never really understood the appeal of nostalgia. I was born in 1980 too, and while I can appreciate some of the pop-culture of the 80s, nothing really justifies the romance for the 80s any more than our parent's love of the 60s can be justified. Nostalgia is nothing more than confirmation bias taken to extremes.

I'm on your side man. I remember throughout the 90's I was looking down my snooty teenage nose at the 80's, thinking our decade was the savior to fashion, music and film. Oh man was I wrong.

Try debating with anyone about which generation had the best coming of age movies, the most unique and fun kids toys, the most eclectic and creative music, and so forth, and I think you'll almost always have the 80's near the top of that list. In most cases I'd say it was the best decade for most of that, but at that point it's a matter of preference.

Anyway, the 80's definitely rocked.

Wrong.

Nostalgia triggers a response in our brains that tends to refresh what are often good memories for many of us. It's an easy escape, sometimes just what an overworked adult needs at a later time in their lives.

Lately, I've been building models with my two sons... like bowling, miniature golf, or car cruising the local park, they are all activities that have become almost nonexistant in this day and age. I can't go back to the days when I enjoyed hanging out with friends at the park, watching bikini-clad girls waxing hot rods (er, cars, that is)and tossing a frisbee around, but I can have fond memories of it. Songs like this tend to trigger a more vivid recollection (especially since I used to crank a lot of music from my Pioneer SuperTuner III auto-reverse deck, with a 500W amp and subs in my racing slicked V-6 '77 Sunbird). Building those models is nice, but it reminds me of what's been lost in the years whenever I need to get supplies, or just try and get time with the kids to do it.

Today people spend endless hours staring at myspace pages waiting for somebody to comment (or refreshing Fark comment threads). At least when we played pong, we eventually got tired of it and turned it off after an hour or so. Video games are so engrossing today, people have been known to spend days at their TVs.

So, nostalgia isn't some odd way to "validate" our particular age, it's just that people are only children once in their lives, and most of us fondly remember those times. Nostalgia amplifies those memories and gives us much-needed stress relief and escape from our current drudgery.

Great_Milenko 2008-10-06 10:42:41 PM
I sorta remember the song, but I don't recall ever seeing the video till years later. Strange that something I really have no connection to gives me such a feeling of nostalgia.

Well, I guess we could say that for every good thing there was a bad, such as along with The Breakfast Club we had the outbreak of AIDS, and even though we got to play with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and DinoBots toys, there was also the Iran Hostage Crisis.... but who wants to do that?

Good stuff.

Spreading the 80's goodness... anyone remember Peter Wolf's "Lights Out?" I played that for some friends recently and no one remembered it. Just wondering if I'm the only one to remember it... (Like Schoolhouse Rock's "Hey Little Twelvetoes" where they teach a base 12 number system on the premise that an alien had 6 fingers and toes on each hand, then proceeded to teach the X times 12 multiplication table.)

Maybe my parents gave me drugs in my formative years.

It's pretty difficult for you to be nostalgic for a decade when you were still in diapers for a major portion of it. People generally consider the best time of life to be when you either first get laid or get laid the most - unless you were really ahead of the curve, in which case I applaud you, Mr. GradeSchool Pimp.

/You know what you never see anymore? Pipe wrench fights.

LesserEvil: and most of us fondly remember those times.

Ah, I think that's my problem. I don't really remember most of my childhood. Or most of my teens. College is vague. My fond childhood memories mostly involve doing the things I do today. Playing with computers, pen and paper RPGs, and reading. Basically, when I have nostalgia, I just go and do the things I enjoy(ed) doing. It's like nothing has changed.

LesserEvil: they are all activities that have become almost nonexistant in this day and age.

What? When did bowling go away? Maybe it's the whole living in Pittsburgh thing, but bowling is still huge around here. While upstate NY, my former home, was packed with mini-golf. And I'm not really sure, but "cruising" and "parks" sounds... well. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I wouldn't take my kids.

Jamespoon: The Breakfast Club we had the outbreak of AIDS

That's two bad things.

Jamespoon: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and DinoBots toys

Ah, but those are two good things.

Well, "cruising in parks" has been taken over by the perverts, to be sure. Back when I was a teen, it was big enough for sponsors, though. Our local park was usually packed, end-to-end with a line of cars, most parking spots taken up by kids hanging out. "Senior Skip Day" became notorious locally when our school sent two busses with the superintendent to round up students. It was about picking up girls, listening to good music, and generally just not having a care in the world.

Of course, with gas prices skyrocketing, the internet isn't the only cause of the demise of car cruising. It's rather sad though... socializing through the web is rather dysfunctional. Both of the women I married I met on a car cruise (the current wife is going on 17 years, the first couldn't handle my overseas tour in the Corps).

As for bowling, I've seen a lot of places close, and there seem to be fewer leagues. My Dad is still active, but it's a tighter group (and older, in general). With a lot of pastimes, there are always holdouts (we still have a couple of drive-in theaters around here), but the numbers still dwindle every year.

Exactly. I was born in 1970 and don't consider myself a '70s kid, because I wasn't doing anything fun and cool until the 1980s (except for some awesome movies of course).

If you were born in 1980, you're a '90s kid.
