10. An intangible, but a very important one, is the issue of trust. Many people, particularly evangelicals, do not trust McCain. That can be an insurmountable problem for a presidential candidate.

That sounds like bad news... for Obama.

"This position alienates many conservatives, who believe that torture is a tool that can and should be used against terrorists. "

No farking way!?! People actually do think that torture should be used? I thought they only wanted to torture whilst pretending it wasn't tortured and changed the language around it a bit to make it more palatable to us average folks?

Obama's page is better...

Barack Hussein Obama, II (allegedly born in Honolulu,[1][2] August 4, 1961) is the 2008 nominee of the Democratic Party for president.[3] Obama has served as a freshman Democratic Senator from Illinois since 2004. On August 23 he chose Senator Joseph Biden as his running mate. In 2007, Obama was rated the most liberal Senator by the National Journal, who had rated Senator John Kerry the most liberal senator during his presidential run as well.[4] If elected, Obama would be the first Affirmative Action President.

Obama, on the campaign trail, stands with folded hands while Bill Richardson and Hillary Clinton honor the flag by placing their hands over their heart during the National Anthem.
Obama, on the campaign trail, stands with folded hands while Bill Richardson and Hillary Clinton honor the flag by placing their hands over their heart during the National Anthem.

Obama almost always reads from prepared text on a teleprompter and rarely allows tough questions.[5][6] Indeed, when unable to read from prepared text he often fails miserably at articulating his positions and is caught tripping over his own feet, as displayed in the Saddleback Forum. The first McCain-Obama debate was held in Mississippi on September 26 and, without a teleprompter, Obama stumbled further.

Obama displayed ignorance about American history when he said, "Throughout our history, America's confronted constantly evolving danger, from the oppression of an empire, to the lawlessness of the frontier, from the bomb that fell on Pearl Harbor, to the threat of nuclear annihilation."[7]

Look up "The Financial Crisis of 2008". Link (new window) (new window) Interestingly, it states:

McCain, blaming the crisis on "the corruption and manipulation of our home mortgage system", rejected the bailout as a favor for Wall Street and little help to Main Street. Believers in the market economy insisted that the market should run its course, and opposed the bailout.
and cites comments from a range of economists at Peter S. Goodman, "Credit Enters a Lockdown," New York Times Sept. 25, 2008

John Sidney McCain (born in Panama) is the winner of the Republican primaries for President in 2008. He is believed to be pro-American, but as his birth certificate states, his middle name is Sidney, proof that his loyalties lie with Australia. It is believed that a McCain presidency will lead the country to the vast import of kangaroos and koalas. His vice president running mate, Sarah Palin, allegedly looks forward to shooting dingoes from a helicopter.

Reading the changes in McCain's page over time is fun and enlightening.

From January 5, 2008:

Electability

John McCain was a member of the Keating Five, a scandal relating to the Savings and Loan Crisis. The Senate Ethics Committee criticized him for "questionable conduct." His Democratic opponent, or the media, could publicize this.

John McCain has cancer (melanoma) and has undergone multiple operations for it.[11] Cancer was an issue that hurt the presidential candidacy of Paul Tsongas in 1992.

John McCain will turn 71 years old before the first primary, making him one of the oldest candidates to seek the presidency. Several issues relating to McCain's advanced aged and health have been discussed in the media.[12]

Among evangelicals, who form a multi-million vote bloc who were essential to electing President George W. Bush, John McCain is weak on trust. James Dobson, a leading evangelical, has already declared that he "would not vote for John McCain under any circumstances."[13] McCain has attempted to make amends with Dobson and the late evangelical leader Jerry Falwell, including speaking at Falwell's Liberty University in an attempt to patch his relations with evangelicals.

McCain is the only presidential candidate in either party to have served in the military.
Fundraising

McCain has struggled to raise money for his campaign, a sign of weakness for a frontrunner. "Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney raised $23 million for his presidential campaign in the first three months of [2007], almost doubling the total of top Republican contender John McCain. McCain, an Arizona senator, brought in about $12.5 million in the first quarter, his campaign said. 'We had hoped to do better,' said Terry Nelson, his campaign manager. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani said he raised $15 million, including more than $10 million in March alone."[14]
Votes Missed

As of August 2007, McCain had missed more votes during the current session of Congress than any Senator other than South Dakota Democrat Tim Johnson, who had suffered a brain hemorrhage that had kept him from Congresss. He had missed over 48% of his votes. [15]

Can't seem to find those sections, now.

SemperLieSuckah: Calling the evangelicals that run Conservapedia "Conservative" is like calling homeopathy "Medicine".

Well they are the Republican base. Without the good folks who think like those responsible for Conservapedia, the last two Presidential elections *as well as the 2000-2006 HoR/Senate elections) would have been more in favour of the Democratic candidates.

Also from January:

Political Record

1. Same-sex marriage. In 2006, McCain joined Democrats and liberal Republicans in voting against the Federal Marriage Amendment to protect traditional marriage. Later, on Hardball, McCain declared, "On the issue of the gay marriage, I believe that people want to have private ceremonies, that's fine." Also, McCain's home state of Arizona was the only state to defeat a marriage referendum (in 2006), as McCain did nothing to support it.

2. "Gang of 14". On May 23, 2005, McCain was part of a group of 14 Senators who blocked the planned "nuclear option" for confirming blocked Republican nominees for the bench. Under this compromise a few judicial nominees were allowed to be confirmed (Janice Rogers Brown, Priscilla Owen and William Pryor), but others (e.g., Henry Saad) remained blocked and had to withdraw.

3. Campaign finance. In 2002, McCain joined with liberal Democrat Russell Feingold to prohibit independent groups from advertising about a candidate within many weeks of an election. This law prohibits ads that do not even recommend for whom to vote, but merely urge people to contact their representatives concerning a vote that the representatives will make in Congress. A court recently declared this unconstitutional.

4. Gambling. The McCain-Feingold campaign finance law allows Indian nations (which get nearly all their money from unregulated casinos) to make unlimited political donations, even though political donations by American citizens are strictly limited and political spending by corporations is prohibited.

5. Tax cuts. McCain opposed President George W. Bush's tax cuts, on the argument that cutting taxes without also cutting spending was not actually a tax cut, but was a tax on future generations. He now supports keeping the Bush tax cuts in place.

6. Criticism of the religious right. In his unsuccessful campaign in 2000, McCain criticized elements of the religious right in an attempt to attract voters.

7. Abortion. On Senate votes directly concerning abortion, McCain has voted on the pro-life side.

8. Government Spending. McCain has vigorously advocated for the elimination of so-called "pork-barrel" spending. He voted against President Bush's Medicare Prescription Drug Act on the grounds that it was too costly.

9. Evolution. McCain's position is that intelligent design should be taught along with the theory of evolution.

10. Gun control. In 2002, McCain supported gun control by joining with Democrat Joseph Lieberman to push legislation that would shut down gun shows.[9]

11. Immigration. In 2005-2006, McCain joined with liberal Senator Ted Kennedy to support a sweeping bill that was favorable to illegal aliens. It has not passed.

12. Senate Attendance Record. McCain has missed 33% of the Senate votes in early 2007, far more than the leading Democratic contenders.[10]

It seems that the Truth About John McCain has become a lot friendlier over time. That's nice of it.

Dear Fark,

I just want to remind everyone that yes (yes!) the Conservapedia is written and maintained by people who thing they need to (need to!) severely bias the documentation of Reality and History, whitewash it in the very least (and that's generous), lie outright all too often.

People who advocate the Conservapedia are no joke. We are talking about the most dangerous people you can find in a society. They would burn every other Encyclopedia and replace it with their Conservapedia. I'm not going to Godwin this, but I think its obvious when you look for examples of this in history.

Yours,

Crown_of_Shoes
