Under a Florida law that took effect this month, drivers face a $1,000 fine for going 50 mph over the speed limit.

if they passed a law like that in THIS state, we'd have traffic accidents all up and down every major highway every day of the week. The truckers would murder so many old folks they'd have to watch buckets of blood off their front grills at every truck stop.

For your 3rd offense of doing 50 over.

Oh, for the love...

Do you really think this is a measure to ensure safety or simply just another means of revenue generation?

You think cops really give a fark about your life or safety? Get real.

Ok then don't get caught speeding and you shouldn't have any trouble.

I'm sure this thread will fill with cop hate. Remember - the cops don't set the fines or make the laws.

"You get a guy who pays $80,000 for his bike, rides it out of the shop the first day, and a few blocks away gets a $1,000 ticket," Lesniak said. "I think this is absolutely ridiculous."

Yea. How's a guy that can afford 80 grand on a bike ever be able to afford $1,000 on a ticket? That's just not right at all.

TheOnion [TotalFark] 2008-10-05 05:04:51 PM
Speeding is one thing, but 50 over the limit? That's always going to be dangerous.

Tr0mBoNe [TotalFark] 2008-10-05 05:09:03 PM
Street Racing is a crime in my province. If you want to drive fast, go to a track. The rest of us just want to get where we're going without dying. Calm down and don't fark things up for the rest of us.

kidsizedcoffin 2008-10-05 05:09:33 PM
Perhaps this is a perfect time to release a device that "prevents" aircraft from clocking your speed. It will a special circuit sticker that you stick to your tailpipes to change IR signatures, yeah that's the ticket! If I reach market saturation, I can tell people it also increases gas millage.

pnjunction [recently expired TotalFark] 2008-10-05 05:09:38 PM
Without RTFA, I'd guess it's targeting street racers just like the crazy penalties around here for going 50+ (km/h) over the limit.

Sure they'll make a few bucks off of these suckers (probably not much compared to the much larger number of smaller tickets), but I'm not cynical enough to think they did this for the money. Street-racing asshats kill people.

I don't get this attitude that lawmakers are somehow obsessed with revenue. They don't get a cut or anything, the big personal payoffs are in reducing revenue by giving breaks to corporations. I guess you could say they have to gut the average citizen to keep budgets balanced, but that's a stretch since who bothers to balance budgets anymore?

Pope George Ringo [TotalFark] 2008-10-05 05:29:56 PM
I expect a lot of speed trappy one-streetlight burgs are going to make a bundle from this law.

"Yeah Sam, I mean Your Honor, I observed the vehicle with Mr. New York Tourist traveling 81 in a 30 zone."

liberalish 2008-10-05 05:33:36 PM
FTA: On the second day the new law went into effect, officers using airplanes to track traffic cited 80 people for excessive speeding in a 1 1/2 -hour period Thursday evening on the southern end of the Palmetto Expressway in Miami-Dade County.

50 mph!! 50 mph over the freeway speed!!??

I "dislike" the revenue generating and power grabbing schemes by police and municipalities as much as your average Farker, but 50 mph over the limit is ridiculous. You deserve a $1000 fine.

RobertBruce [TotalFark] 2008-10-05 05:45:51 PM
if you're going 115 or more on the freeway? yeah I have no problem with this. You'll probably end up rolling over and off a bridge anyway.

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2008-10-05 06:01:32 PM
How many people have three tickets for over 120 on a motorcycle?

On my previous commute it was easy to go 50 over the limit. 40 over was the usual speed of traffic. Mass. Route 2 eastbound at the Acton-Concord line. Speed limit 45. It used to be higher but locals demanded a reduction. This is limited access, divided highway. Average speed is over 60. The speed limit drops to 25 a quarter mile ahead of the rotary. The average car is doing about 40 over the limit there because there's no need to slow down that early.

On the second day the new law went into effect, officers using airplanes to track traffic cited 80 people for excessive speeding in a 1 1/2 -hour period. "I expected we'd see two or three, but there was one right after the other,"

If there are this many people speeding, and they didn't mention any accidents, then doesn't that suggest that speeding is safe? Speeding doesn't automatically cause accidents.

While there are a LOT of instances where I'd be on board with this argument (like red light cameras, and small town speed traps), applying it here is moronic.

Revenue-generating fines are priced specifically NOT to be a strong deterrent. They can't make money if people can't afford to pay or if most people would rather just slow down. $2000 is enough to make anybody think twice when they're shifting into 4th at the redline. Plus, it comes with a 10 year suspension. If they were just out to make some cash, they wouldn't want to stifle repeat business.

No, this actually looks like a law aimed at stopping farkwits from putting other people in danger. There's no excuse for doing 120 in a 65.

Kome [TotalFark] 2008-10-05 06:24:42 PM

True, but speeding contributes to the seriousness of an accident.

I thought it was going to be a story about speeding in construction zones.

Sorry but doing 50+ over the speed limit is ridiculous. Maybe on some deserted road out in Montana but not on a freeway where you can take out innocent people.

I'm all for this. My residential street is 25 mph. Every morning there was an idiot biatch that was flying down the street, and we have a big grade school 2 blocks away. I called, the cops everyday until they finally sent someone to come and sit on the corner to see if they could catch her. She was doing 63 farking mph in a 25 mph school zone. When she went to court, her dad (turns out she was a 17 year old snowflake taking her little brother to school) threatened to sue me for invading the private life of his daughter or some such bullshiat. Anyway, judge fined her $500, 50 hours of community service, and pulled her license for a year. I personally didn't think it was enough.

DO I speed? Sure, and I'm willing to pay the consequences if I get caught doing it. Do I drive recklessly? No. You can argue all day long that exceeding a speed limit by 50 mph isn't reckless, but you'd be wrong.

Sir, I clocked you doing Ludicrous Speed. As you can see, this is clearly marked as a "Elevated Above Normal Speed"-only zone.

You're just lucky I didn't see you go to Plaid, son. That's a felony in this state.

I was under the impression that 20 over and you automatically got put in jail for wreckless driving.

And yes, 50 mph over the limit is pretty much never acceptable. You would be doing freeway speeds in town. You would be doing autobahn speeds on I-5.

Oh yeah. You've never driven on the highway in S Florida I take it. There are basically two scenarios to expect: either parked in a deadlock or getting to watch idiots fly by you at ludicrous speed, erratically changing lanes to dodge trucks.
Oh, it was a joy.

I would call anything before 7p.m. as "evening". I moved out of Miami about 20 years ago, but even then, excessive speeding on the Palmetto Expressway in the evening? Until 7 pm it is better known as the Palmetto Parking lot.

/ have done 100 on the Palmetto - but at 11 at night.

Cops hitting people during highs peed chases should be charged with attempted manslaughter or murder 100% of the time though.

Were existing laws adequate to handle the issues? I suspect the answer was easily yes. Going 120MPH is pretty much a arrestable offense anywhere. Popping wheelies will pretty much get you a ticket, also. So what is the point of another law? The appearance that legislators are doing "something." I am a big believers that legislators should spend a lot more time passing a lot fewer laws, but making the ones they do pass much better designed.

jeffwashingdc 2008-10-05 08:39:48 PM
If you're doing 50+ over speed limit, you're pretty much telling everyone you don't give a fark about murder. Screw the $1000 fine, just send their ass to jail.

And don't even whine about how going 110 mph is doable and easy. I'm sure it is. But it's not about how fast you're going. It's about how fast you're going compared to the rest of the traffic. Same reason why going 50+ below speed limit is just as asinine.

ReverendJasen 2008-10-05 08:41:31 PM
TehNacho: I was under the impression that 20 over and you automatically got put in jail for wreckless driving.

I believe 50 over was the limit for automatic arrest.
I've gotten a couple tickets for 20 over (80 in a 55) and was never threatened with arrest. You're right about 50 over being pretty ridiculous though.

Phone_Answering_Monkey 2008-10-05 08:43:17 PM
Examples of $80,000 bikes? Seems like it would be the way-high-end, price-wise.

ottawaboy 2008-10-05 08:44:12 PM
Since we had a new "street racing" law in ON, our speed related deaths have gone down 40%. Traffic deaths on highways overall are down over 30% (although some may be attributed to higher gas prices) The fines are up to $10,000 here, and your car is impounded on the spot for 1 week.

I was doing 15 over once, and was told if I'd been doing 20 over, I would have been arrested on the spot.

I was also accused of not paying attention, when in reality I was pulled over before he even had his light bar on. I saw maybe the first foot of white crown vic hood as I passed a hedge and knew I was about to get farked.

I drive very much more better since then.

WTF. Lots of cars won't do 105 safely, and some people will consider this law a challenge -- that's how it works. Two or three tickets and Florida can do away with sales taxes and most other taxes, since all their revenue problems will be solved.
