I don't really see this as detrimental to up-and-coming artists, but helpful...if the other artists see fit to actually help others. I guess it's like a union, but then we're on a whole other topic.

/Plus, Iron Maiden can do whatever they want.

Yeah, because everyone knows that the best way to fight a giant, bureaucratic network of scum fiercely pursuing its own interests at the expense of others, you need to start a UNION!

Sorry for getting into that whole other topic.

You know...

I feel sorry for the artists. Because I think they are damned if they do and damned if they dont. And that position sucks to be in.

Has anyone ever seen "The harder they come,' the Jimmy Cliff movie? There was no way 'Ivan' would be successful if he didnt sign over all his profits to the recording/DJ cartel because he would never be played, but if he did, his royalties would go to the cartel, so he'd still be poor.

Hopefully the illegal and unprofitable downloading will destroy the system, but also cause an alternate, and more fare system to replace it. As it appears the new "marketing and distribution" require much much less capital- because downloaders dont require physical CD's t be produced.. then shipped... then stocked... then sold in a retail outlet paying staff, mall rent, electricity, sales tax, etc.

If a CD of 10 songs costs 10$ there is absolutely no reason each song on download should cost 1$ each.

And that's different than now, how?

I can't trust the reporting since it says former Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour.

Pink Floyd no longer exists, ergo 'former'.

I know you're being sarcastic, but even so, new bands are getting a big cut of their tour and merchandise revenue getting skimmed off by the record companies now.

I can't reproduce my stuff live, so can't get money that way, but hey. I like making music, and don't mind doing it for free. What the hell else would I be doing with my spare time? It's this or wasting it on TV.

I think Valdes died. No Radiohead trolling in as far as I can remember.

Iron Maiden have a point the other three don't -

It's estimated they got screwed out of over 10 million/member thanks to their insanely shiatty deal with Columbia.

That's 50-70 million, or roughly half of what they've made in thirty (THIRTY) years.

/Sanctuary Records is over half owned by Iron Maiden, for the record.
//Robbie Williams and Radiohead are talentless hacks, anyone who says otherwise is gay. Gay robots. That's right, they're gay robots.

New bands are only unknown because they arent getting radio time. Why dont they get radio time? Because the labels also control what happens on the radio, even when they dont directly own that station.

"You want our artists in studio for interviews? You want to cross-promote a concert? You want use to advertise on your station? Then we get to pick your playlists"

Allow the On-air talent the freedom to set a playlist, and suddenly, a lot of new bands will come up the system. Most DJs live deep in the music world. They know who is out there in the small clubs who can become stadium-fillers, but they are handcuffed by the businesses to make sure he gets the new Coldplay single on at least once every hour.

Keep the Labels away from the radio stations (and also the show venues), and you dont need a label to make it big.
