I have a feeling it would never get that far. The Senate gets to decide who the VP is, and even though Lieberman isn't exactly warm to the Democrats these days, he would definately caucus with them on this vote, and we'd have President Biden.

But in order for a tie, McCain would have to regain serious ground in Ohio, Virginia, Florida, Colorado, Nevada, and New Hampshire. Good luck with that.

Pope George Ringo [TotalFark] 2008-10-05 12:49:23 PM
According to fivethirtyeight.com, the chance of an EV tie next month is about 1 in 400.

Kublai Khan [TotalFark] 2008-10-05 01:14:08 PM
What if it's a tie?

I don't know Reuters, what if a meteor hit Washington while they were being sworn in? OH NOES!

What if the media actually produced decent reporting, wouldn't that be something?

Stupidest farking non-story of the election season.

Koggie [TotalFark] 2008-10-05 01:27:08 PM
Everybody keeps talking about fivethirtyeight.com but their numbers look pretty wild.

I prefer electionproject.com. The guy is unabashedly for McCain but his projections were nearly dead-on on the 2004 and 2006 elections.

electoral-vote.com is also good though his predictions swing pretty wildly too.

I'm not sold on fivethirtyeight.com.

There would have to be some mega-October-surprise for McCain to come back at this point in the race and get 269 electoral votes. The numbers are just not there.

Big year for Illinois, Cubs won the world series, and Obama won the White House. Wait...what?

I'd sooner see president Hillary. At least she'd be competent.

sloppy shoes 2008-10-05 01:57:29 PM
I'm pretty sure Pelosi becoming President is also the least likely scenario if there were an electoral tie (also an unlikely scenario).

For the sake of hypotheticals (sp?), you'd probably either have electoral vote switching (though probably unlikely), or Biden becoming President after the Senate elected him vice president and the house unable to then bring in Obama, if that is the case. I doubt they would be able to sway enough democrats to vote in McCain, and it's unlikely a democratic senate would not immediately elect Biden as Vice president given the opposing option of Palin. Biden would then select Obama as his VP, then resign, making Barack the prez.

I really, really, REALLY don't see that happening. Just another ZOMFG ITZ SOOOO CLOSE KEEP WATCHING&REEDING US!!11! story.

ZAZ [TotalFark] 2008-10-05 02:15:22 PM
Say hello? Aren't we supposed to yell "not my president" and threaten to move to another country?

TheOther [TotalFark] 2008-10-05 02:18:27 PM
Pelosi is about to get demoted from 'most powerful elected Democrat' to 2nd place. (Yes, the VP is second in line, but, until needed, the VP has less real power than a Speaker of the House.) Harry Reid is going from 2nd to 3rd...or 4th...depending.

Speaking of Depends, is Byrd still President Pro-tem of the Senate?

so you're telling me there's a chance.

This will not happen when Obama gets over 400 electoral votes.

Yep. Probably will only take death to remove him from that position. Don't really see him retiring.

538 (new window) is saying there is a 0.23% chance of an electoral tie.

It's only sightly more likely than a Cubs World Championship this year.

Mugato [TotalFark] 2008-10-05 04:36:00 PM
I guess bringing up the evil, anti-states rights POPULAR vote would be un-democratic. I mean, too democratic.

pandabear [TotalFark] 2008-10-05 04:45:48 PM
I'd be willing to wager that Ms. Pelosi will not be the Speaker of the House next January 20.

Not an Olizard1016bama fan, but, I'm pretty sure he'll win. Pretty easily.

Pelosi is such an embarrassment.

The man who runs that site also runs PECOTA. You've heard of that right? Are you aware of how pretty accurate PECOTA is? I'd trust Nate Silver over just about anyone right now, regardless of what the numbers show.

No, we need the electoral college. otherwise ignorant, easily panicked herd animals could be swayed into voting for a facist government.

Wouldn't happen.

And I think the use of the 'Scary' tag is unwarranted. I don't care much for Pelosi, but the much more probable possibility of Palin being one breath away from president of the United States is much more scary.

RminusQ [TotalFark] 2008-10-05 05:21:18 PM
Democrats, who control the 435-seat House, outnumber Republicans in 27 state congressional delegations and could see that number rise in the November elections.

The rest of the article is meaningless crap. Tie goes to Obama. Even in the incredibly unlikely event that the House deadlocks, it's the new Senate that elects the VP, which will be a clear majority of Democrats, and thus Biden would easily be VP. No President Pelosi.

Isn't the Electoral College like a jump ball in some college basketball? The Republicans got the ball after the last tie-up, so now the Democrats have the possession arrow.

Hard to imagine a tie. I've been looking for electoral maps that give McCain the lead, and only find one (LA Times)

Anybody see any others?

Good comparison. If Pelosi tries to pull anything like that, I have a job for Manny Ramirez and that bat of his.

Um, the Cubs lost their division series yesterday, so they have a 0% chance of a World Championship. I would say a 0.23% chance is infinitely more likely than a 0.0% chance; to say it's "only slightly more likely" is wrong.

Why don't these idiots in Congress make sure that there are an odd number of electoral votes so we don't have ties? Make the popular vote worth 1 EV.

I guess it makes too much sense....

FarKnight 2008-10-05 06:05:59 PM
Republicans are going to get pwned so hard the next four years. The fact that McCain is trying to make the case that he "reaches across the aisle" really says something. They're trying to bargain. Because they know the alternative is a dem majority along with a highly ambitious liberal president, and shiat might actually get done for once.
