I'd say that the worst Cash cover is what that Trent Reznor did to "Hurt"

puuukeey [TotalFark] 2008-10-05 12:10:33 PM
my friends band does a cool version (new window). Its a crappy recording though...
usually gets the whole place on their feet when the background screamy vocals come in

Insane in the brain!

I like it. It's nice to see a newer song sampled to do a cover of a classic rather than some classic sampled to make a new song. Plus he gave the Cash family final say over this cover. It appeals to my enjoyment of alternative country.

This is the worst thing to happen to dead people since Fred Astaire danced with the vaccum cleaner.

I hope this guy comes down with the kind of cancer they have to name "Everlast cancer" because nobody died a more horrible death from it.

Manic_Repressive [TotalFark] 2008-10-05 01:31:15 PM
That's just sad. The only good thing about that video is that the link actually popped to YouTube and not that shiatty Fark YouTube video player thing.

If "Annoying" was dirt--that would be an acre or two.

Dumbass is still using that same stupid over used sample I see.

I really hate that guy. I really hate that horrible pretentious song he had a hit with just a few years ago. You know, the one where he had just learned his first guitar chords and fooled himself (and others) into thinking he was now a "legit" songwriter/performer.

Pure phony.

cyan_hit 2008-10-05 01:58:42 PM
that is so motherfarking disrespectful.

truly a farking disaster, that song

I hate pointing out repeats, but was this not posted a month or so ago with the COOL tag?

/it's still awful

Boris S. Wort [TotalFark] 2008-10-05 02:23:36 PM
Okay, I think most of us will agree that was a pantsload.

But this brings me to another thing I disliked about that cover; and the vast majority of Johnny Cash covers out there... why do people only cover three of his songs (Folsom Prison, Ring of Fire and, occasionally, I Walk the Line)? Come on, the guy wrote hundreds of songs... cover a different one for a change. If all you are going for is audience familiarity, there are still a few that you could perform that the "play something I know" crowd will recognize. How about, Don't Take Your Guns to Town, or One Piece at a Time, or even Austin Prison, for a change?

I think the poster was being ironical and/or sarcastical.

It's how I feel about Depeche Mode ruining Marilyn Manson's "Personal Jesus."

I only came in to see if it was Johnny Cash singing La Donna e Mobile.

/Some hated his version of Yummy, Yummy, Yummy, I've Got Love in My Tummy, but I thought it was pretty good.

LOLAWSOME

Yeah, it would have been a lot better without that stupid "insane in the membrane" sample, still a boatload of fail, but not as much failure-ing.

carmody 2008-10-05 03:15:42 PM
Believe it or not, I've actually heard much, much worse covers of this very song.

Mike Ness', for instance.

Are you being sarcastic or is this one of the most massive FAILS to ever appear on the Fark Music?

Darth_Lukecash [TotalFark] 2008-10-05 04:10:58 PM
Personally, I think Johnny would have loved this rendition of it. As a songwriter and entertainer, he would have gotten a kick out of the new way that country was going...remember, he was rockabilly guy. If his family approved of this, then hot damn and give them mad props.

To tell you the truth, even Trent Razor believes that Cash owns "Hurt" now. He was thoroughly honored to have a guy like Johnny Cash do a great interpretation of the music. I assume that a songwriter/singer biggest thrill is to have the song loved and not his version of it.

But keep in mind, what Makes Johnny Cash Hurt works is this: Johnny LIVED through the drug experience...he brought his own pain to the song. It spoke to him. And what made the song even MORE popular was the video. The director did a great job giving the song some emotional weight by having scenes of a life of the man. As a result, it comes off that he's a man wounded by a lifetime of fame and fortune.

Cash's daughter broke down and cried after she saw the video she was so touched by it. The saddest thing is that it's the last thing June and Johnny did, I believe-entertainment wise.

mfaby 2008-10-05 04:36:59 PM
Ive seen worse and this sure ain't no 'Final Countdown'...

What I want to know is WTF is up with that high-pitched 'wooing' noise that's on most hip-hop/rap?

Just farking annoying...

HowlingFrog,
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes do an excellent cover of Sunday Morning Coming Down... here 's a crappy youtube video of it

if his family approved all the haters can stfu.

But I agree with the previous poster, if you're gonna cover Johnny there's a vast library to chose from pick something else.

HOLY CRAP that is creepy..... where the hell are y'all from?!?!?!? I play in a band called Hector Ward and the Big Time - we mostly do originals, but one of our centerpieces in Folsom Prison. We have a sax player and a conga player, and the lead guitar (me) is a Telecaster player as well

DID I JUST WAKE UP IN AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
