I don't really get it. Before I got married, I told my wife our options:

1) She could take my last name
2) She could keep her own last name
3) She could make up some new last name like "Sharkhunter"

...And I would support whichever choice she made. However, under no circumstances would I change my own. I'd already spent 27 years getting used to my name, there was no real need to change it now.

I'm outraged about this affront to tradition! I think this is- wait, what?

When indie musician Todd Baechle married Orenda Fink, he made a decision that rocked some worlds. He took his wife's last name.

"Baechle"?
Oh, never mind. Carry on.

You tell him. Go to his yurt and confiscate his man card while you're at it.

Considering the number of people I've run across in my life with the last name of "Smith" and "Johnson", I can see the desire to have something else.

My wife kept hers. Do you know how much of a pain in the ass it is to get a name change?

This. My wife kept her name, too.

As a guy who's heard his name mispronounced every damn day of his life, I would definitely take my fiancée's name unless it was equally baffling, or downright goofy.

Talon [TotalFark] 2008-10-05 12:28:27 PM
My last name is somewhat unique. A google search for me only brings up stuff about me. The only other people I know of with my last name are in my family. I've heard my name mispronounced a hundred different ways, even though it is very short, simple, and really some of these pronunciations are just adding letters that aren't there.

I'll be glad to take my future husband's name... since it is one of the top 20 or so last names.

As a male, I would do this.

My grandmother agreed to marry my grandfather on the condition she would change her last name to his but as long as she were alive any descendants would have her maiden name. Her maiden name was Eddy.

Snarfangel [TotalFark] 2008-10-05 12:45:53 PM
If she had a cool name, like Bond, Steele, Armstrong, or Thor, sure.

Confabulat [TotalFark] 2008-10-05 12:53:57 PM
In the era of Facebook and MySpace, what kind of idiot gives up their own goddamned name for some sort of retarded Middle Ages tradition?

I have no respect for anyone who does so. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Most people don't even change their cell phone number these days. I'm embarrassed for women (and men) who give up the only real thing that actually will always belong to them, for what? Love?

hahahahaha

Broadcastdave [TotalFark] 2008-10-05 01:05:13 PM
My college roommate changed his name to his wifes. His was some Czech name that you couldnt pronounce. His wifes last name was LaBrie.

Snarfangel: If she had a cool name, like Bond, Steele, Armstrong, or Thor, sure.

Agreed- if it's cooler than mine, I'll change. If not, make up a new one for both of us. Jack White used to be Gillis, but took his (ex)wife's name because it sounded cooler. No way in hell I'd do hyphens- if we can't agree on the name...well it just seems like a bad sign.

The worst offender is Bill Smith, who shoehorned his mother's maiden name into his own.

/Like the Kennedy name wasn't being ruined enough by real Kennedys

Same here.

I know one guy who took his wife's name. The marriage lasted about four months. Awkward.

The people I've come across actually want to opposite, a unique last name. I guess it depends on your point of view.

If we're going to ignore all cultural norms, then it's perfectly acceptable for the groom to wear a dress to the wedding and throw a bouquet to the groomsmen.

However, we have cultural norms, and we have gender norms. Expect to get lots of shiat, as a guy, for adopting a feminine role in the marriage aspect of society.

In my experience, this is correct.

texastag 2008-10-05 02:49:38 PM
We should all just switch to numbers. So much easier. When you get married they just add the two numbers together and presto! New last number.

That way women could have the satisfaction of taking half the guy's last name in the divorce too.

After a marriage? It's trivial. Any other time it takes about an hour at town hall or wherever your probate court is. You fill out a short form, the judge asks you to affirm that you're doing it of your own free will and not for fraudulent reasons then he signs the paperwork and you're done. That's in CT anyway, no idea about other states.

My wife changed her first/middle names a couple years before we were married but were living together (she always went by her middle name and hated her first) and later on when we were actually married took my last name so I've seen the process pretty thoroughly.

Change our last names for a woman?

We were born Danzas, we were raised Danzas, and we're damn well going to die as Danzas.

I've a solution for us all: Don't get married.

Think about it: every girlfriend or boyfriend you've ever had either you got tired of them or they got tired of you. In the end you both won because you were able to go your separate ways and find a NEW vagina or penis to have sex with.

Now, why the FARK would you want to pay money to be legally bound to a certain individual and have to pay money and risk MORE money having to break away from them in the future?

DON'T. FARKING. DO IT.

I have a couple of friends who have combined their last names with their wives. One couple already had very strange last names, so the combination of their two names is even weirder. Each of them cut the name in half and put the two together.

Yeah, my wife did it last year. It takes the filling out of one form to get an name changed. Damn, that was tough.

/I know, changing the info on all the rest of the stuff. That took, like, an hour!

I don't think the real issue is the actual name change. The real pain in the ass is updating the million and one places that now have an outdated name for you on file (and a lot of them are businesses that are incompetent and unable to easily do so).

I would change to my wife's name if she had a last name like this:
