To be fair, my son would absolutely love this. But I'm not driving out to Carp every day.

Out standing.

Winter is the character-building part of the curriculum. When we have snow and ice 5 months of the year, there's not much choice. And it's not like recess periods stop during winter in the later grades, besides, it's a good opportunity to pelt annoying classmates with snowballs.

Geez, what kind of parents would pay to send their kids there? Kids should be inside where they belong, in front of a TV.

tuxq 2008-10-05 11:02:21 AM
We had these down south, it's called a farm... and the kids are called slaves.

i'd be up for it; but for Marlene's information, the weather in Europe is a little different than in Canada...

Darwinism to ensue!

Sounds way better than the current situation..

Fat kids eating processed food sitting inside doing nothing other than making sure they don't get injured..

Older then jesus, and 3 times more delicious!

Give me some tomato sauce blood and cheese fat and you got a tasty jesus!

I remember last year's winter and I can honestly say that this is going to end badly.

The Ecowellness Centre building itself will be used... if the temperature drops below -10C

-10C isn't really that cold for winter.

When I saw "hippies" I thought this was being done in Vancouver or something where the climate is pretty mild, but in Ottawa?? Even the universities there have underground tunnels so that the students don't have to go outside during the winter...

amishkarl 2008-10-05 11:13:51 AM
longjohns, pants, t-shirt, sweater, snowpants, heavy coat, toque, mittens, 2 pairs of socks, and winter boots (scarf optional)

you'd be amazed how long you can stay warm. besides this is Ottawa not Iqaluit, you're only going to have -15 C for most of the winter.
yeah, there'll be a few days when its colder, but there's warmer days too.

Yes Sound 2008-10-05 11:14:17 AM
Its part of a two tiered money making scheme. In a few years they will deploy the psychologists to reap the court ordered business from the delinquent teenagers caused by this child abuse.

Madame Ovary 2008-10-05 11:14:25 AM
I don't get you guys. Always complaining about "precious little snowflakes", yet you condemn an innovative program like this.

I take my kids out in all weather....because its FUN! Appropriate dress is necessary though.

Tsunami Ditka 2008-10-05 11:16:56 AM
As long as the temperature doesn't drop below -10 C, according to TFA. That's about +15 F. Which really isn't THAT cold, unless you're from the South or something.

They'll be fine.

I've been to Ottawa several times during the winter and can't remember a time it was above -10C.

The outdoor thing probably not much of an issue, given it won't be many days.

Batewoman 2008-10-05 11:20:19 AM
The Ecowellness Centre building itself will be used by the pre-school during lightning storms or if the temperature drops below -10C, and will give its 10 students access to modern washrooms.

I don't see anything wrong with this. If they had one nearby and I needed a daycare for my kids I'd sign them up.

domesticatedviking 2008-10-05 11:22:17 AM
"The Ecowellness Centre building itself will be used by the pre-school during lightning storms or if the temperature drops below -10C, and will give its 10 students access to modern washrooms. But most activities will take place outdoors or inside the yurt."

They'll be inside below -10. Subby is the one who gets the fail tag.

CygnusDarius [TotalFark] 2008-10-05 11:22:21 AM
Sooo, does this means canadian kids have balls, or does this means canadian hippies are less of a pussy than american hippies?.

Speaking of FAIL, subby.....

The Ecowellness Centre building itself will be used by the pre-school during lightning storms or if the temperature drops below -10C, and will give its 10 students access to modern washrooms.

um, -10C isn't that cold. Dressed appropriately, that's party time in the snow -- ideal for snow forts and snowball fights. My kids and I play outside in that weather all...the...time.

Plus, they're in the woods, so the wind isn't really a factor either, likely.

Come on -- the number of "precious snowflakes" articles that get posted here, and you tag this FAIL? Really?

ManifestDestiny: Norway called. It'd like its standard method of pre-schooling back.

Also this. Husband is Norwegian (like from Norway not just had a great-great-grampa) and he was just fine. When we lived in Norway my kids went to a few days of a daycare like this. There WAS a hill there that was quite steep and made me nervous that my 2 year old would go rolling down and crack his head but nobody ever did.

Swede 2008-10-05 11:23:19 AM
Boot their little asses out into the snow.

When I was a kid we played outside in the winter all the time. Sledding, snow forts, hockey and skating, snowball fights, shovelling the driveway etc.

It's what made me the internet tough-guy I am today.

inkling79 2008-10-05 11:24:50 AM
Preschool coordinator Marlene Power-Johnston said outdoor preschools have existed in Europe for decades.

So has the concept of not showering.

Dumle 2008-10-05 11:25:24 AM
We have preschools like that here as well (in the icy north). Good for the kids, they love it.

jgrynspan 2008-10-05 11:27:18 AM
I don't see the problem. We were outside all the time in school in Canada.

Mr Squirrel 2008-10-05 11:29:29 AM
Sounds like an excellent alternative.

Kniggit 2008-10-05 11:36:52 AM
Subby should pay more attention to some of the nicer places in Canada weather-wise, like Victoria on Vancouver Island.

Linky

Dansker 2008-10-05 11:37:34 AM
Why does Subby hate children?
The experience here in Denmark is that kids in outdoors preschools are more healthy and less likely to develop asthma and allergies.

Helen_Arigby 2008-10-05 11:39:23 AM
I have to hop aboard the "FAIL tag for subby" boat. This is an awesome idea. -10 Celsius is NOT cold if you're dressed appropriately and moving--and hands up, who thinks a class of preschoolers will stay still?

Bills Cat 2008-10-05 11:41:51 AM
She sez: "I really wanted my child to grow up with environmental principles ...to be able to connect to nature and to grow that connection and the love for nature and from that connection."

Doesn't that sound so noble and idealistic? Wow, what a intellectual dink. Yeah, and bet yer ass she won't be the one trying to draw a chalk picture in the rain at 12 degrees. But she'll be the first one to raise hell about her little OogieWoogie catching pioson ivy and pnumonia in the same day...

How about send the kid to a normal preschool with lights and heat, and then let the little rug biter play in the yard at home? Du-oh.

Oh those Canadians, eh.

Dodgeball time is a very special time - not just for you kids, for Miss Lippy as well...so stay outside.

The Dogs of War: her last name is power-johnson, there has to be some sort of joke in there, but i cant find it.

IMDb found it for you:

Chris Knight: So, if there's anything I can do for you, or, more to the point, to you, you just let me know.
Susan: Can you hammer a six-inch spike through a board with your penis?
Chris Knight: Not right now.
Susan: A girl's gotta have her standards.

/personal hero is Jordan.

spidermilk 2008-10-05 11:50:21 AM
I like this idea. I think little kids can have a lot more fun outside anyway, building forts, exploring (even in small areas), and just not having as many rules as they would inside.

I wouldn't necessarily want mine going to a preschool where the rule was *outdoors all the time*.. maybe some arts/crafts in the early morning when it is chilly, then outside, lunch outside, afternoon outside.

and when I was a kid I LOVED playing in the rain, so a rainy day wouldn't really be so bad.. although they might need to come in early if they were completely soaked & cold

Fark You 2008-10-05 11:50:41 AM
This is actually a great idea.

This is in B.C., where the mean average temperature is a balmy 43° Fahrenheit in chilly January. Really, that's not so bad. Now, if this were to take place in Edmonton or Winnipeg, I might feel otherwise.

/Subby is an idiot for labeling this a fail.

st.theresa 2008-10-05 11:55:47 AM
Helen_Arigby: I have to hop aboard the "FAIL tag for subby" boat. This is an awesome idea. -10 Celsius is NOT cold if you're dressed appropriately and moving--and hands up, who thinks a class of preschoolers will stay still?

My pediatrician totally recommended getting the kid outside every day for chunks of time with appropriate clothing, all the way down to 10F, and that's when she was tiny. Now that she's bigger and has a more normalized volume/surface ratio, she could probably stay outside even longer.

/Shovel faster, sweetie.
